    Climate change: Why the conspiracy theories are dangerous

    Uncertainty surrounds the public understanding of climate change and provides fertile ground for conspiracy theories. Typically, such conspiracy theories assert that climate scientists and politicians are distorting or hijacking the science to suit their own purposes. Climate change conspiracy theories resemble other conspiracy theories in some respects, but in others they appear to be quite different. For example, climate change conspiracy theories appear to be motivated by the desire to deny or minimize an unwelcome and threatening conclusion. They also appear to be more contentious than other types of conspiracy theories. Perhaps to an unparalleled extent, people on both sides of the issue champion climate change conspiracy theories. Finally, more than other conspiracy theories, those concerning climate change appear to be more politically loaded, dividing opinion across the left-right continuum. Some empirical evidence suggests that climate change conspiracy theories may be harmful, steering people away from environmentally friendly initiatives. They therefore present a significant challenge for governments and environmental organizations that are attempting to convince people to take action against global warming

    Fiber reinforced polymeric composites have been known and widely used because of their high specific strength and modulus compared to metals. In the last few years, biomaterials listed as a demand technology to be exploring by researchers especially in industrial purpose. This is push by environmental awareness and the over use of petrol resources lead to the development of new materials, called biocomposites, which will maintain a better future. This paper will be discussing about a brief review of natural fibers, use in automotive industry to achieve a green technology target in manufacturing of cars specifically. It's a fact that, related to weight reduction, the automotive industry can take advantages of using these materials, not only because of extinction of oil reserve, but because of high ability and importance of these materials itself in automobiles. Currently, most composites in the market are focused with long-term durability design while using nondegradable polymeric resins such as epoxies and high-strength fiber such as glass. All these materials prove to be a good characteristic of composite but still lack in environmental concern. This polymer and fiber are derived from petroleum, a nonreplenishable commodity. The momentum is to use biocomposites in common plastics to improve performance. Since the main purpose of this paper is to show a bio-composite which is suitable to replace the existing interior of automotive design, the work has focused on obtaining that bio-composite, taking account into the raw-materials cost reduction and the maintenance of the manufacturing process based on current scenario. The automotive industry is in their way to expand green technology in composites because the need is greatest. But producing the composites is energy intensive and polluting, while the durability of conventional composites, often seen as an advantage, is also their biggest challenge. Current fibers use in industry right now is difficult to dispose. They do not degrade naturally and could linger for generations

    The SuperCDMS collaboration is a dark matter search effort aimed at detecting the scattering of WIMP dark matter from nuclei in cryogenic germanium targets. The CDMS Detector Monte Carlo (CDMS-DMC) is a simulation tool aimed at achieving a deeper understanding of the performance of the SuperCDMS detectors and aiding the dark matter search analysis.     Correlation Between Cutting Force and Residual Stress in Dry End-Milling of Inconel HX

    Residual stress in the end-milled subsurface can significantly affect the fatigue performance of end-milled material. In the end-milling process, the generation of residual stress is extremely complex, which is closely related to the spindle speed, feed per tooth and cutting force. Thus, it is crucial to elucidate the influence of spindle speed and feed per tooth on cutting force and residual stress, also the correlation between cutting force and residual stress in terms of spindle speed and feed per tooth. According to this, dry end-milling of Inconel HX was performed by climb-milling using Kennametal KYS40 solid ceramic end-mill. From this experimental test, cutting force and residual stress showed a U-shaped relationship with the increase of spindle speed, while cutting force and residual stress showed a linear relationship with the increase of feed per tooth. Furthermore, for low cutting force and residual stress, the focus should be on choosing the optimum combination of spindle speed (21,400 to 24,100 rpm) and feed per tooth (0.014 to 0.016 mm/tooth)

    Experimental Characterization of Space Charge in IZIP Detectors

    Interleaved ionization electrode geometries offer the possibility of efficient rejection of near-surface events. The CDMS collaboration has implemented this interleaved approach for the charge and phonon readout for our germanium detectors. During a recent engineering run with negligible ambient radiation, the detectors were found to lose ionization stability more quickly than expected. This paper summarizes studies done in order to determine the underlying cause of the instability, as well as possible running modes that maintain stability without unacceptable loss of livetime. Additionally, first results are shown for the new version IZIP mask which attempts to improve the overall stability of the detectors.United States.     Monte Carlo Comparisons to a Cryogenic Dark Matter Search Detector with low Transition-Edge-Sensor Transition Temperature

    We present results on phonon quasidiffusion and Transition Edge Sensor (TES) studies in a large, 3 inch diameter, 1 inch thick [100] high purity germanium crystal, cooled to 50 mK in the vacuum of a dilution refrigerator, and exposed with 59.5 keV gamma-rays from an Am-241 calibration source. We compare calibration data with results from a Monte Carlo which includes phonon quasidiffusion and the generation of phonons created by charge carriers as they are drifted across the detector by ionization readout channels. The phonon energy is then parsed into TES based phonon readout channels and input into a TES simulator

    A severe case of erythrodermic psoriasis associated with advanced nail and joint manifestations: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Erythrodermic psoriasis is a rare generalized clinical presentation of psoriasis in children and adults. Its systemic involvement and a diverse range of clinical findings in the joint and nails are commonly described. A high index of suspicion and an exhaustive differential diagnosis involving other causes of erythroderma should be initially considered.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present the case of a 9-year-old native Hispanic girl with severe erythrodermic psoriasis associated with uncommon advanced nail and joint manifestations. Our patient showed an excellent response to methotrexate medication.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This case shows clinical features not commonly described or reported in severe cases of erythrodermic psoriasis, including severe and rare nail and arthritic findings in a pediatric scenario.</p
