BCS pairing in Fermi systems with several flavors
Motivated by the prospect of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing in cold
fermionic gases we analyze the superfluid phase of 3 fermionic flavors in the
attractive Hubbard model. We show that there are several low--lying collective
pairing modes and investigate their damping due to the partially gapless nature
of the single-particle spectrum. Furthermore we analyze how these modes show up
in the density response of the system. Apart from the Anderson-Bogoliubov phase
mode of the pairing between two flavors, the dynamical structure factor
contains signatures of the gapless third flavor. This picture is found to be
robust against perturbations that break the global SU(3)-symmetry of the
Hamiltonian.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
Experimental observations of dynamic critical phenomena in a lipid membrane
Near a critical point, the time scale of thermally-induced fluctuations
diverges in a manner determined by the dynamic universality class. Experiments
have verified predicted 3D dynamic critical exponents in many systems, but
similar experiments in 2D have been lacking for the case of conserved order
parameter. Here we analyze time-dependent correlation functions of a quasi-2D
lipid bilayer in water to show that its critical dynamics agree with a recently
predicted universality class. In particular, the effective dynamic exponent
crosses over from to as the correlation
length of fluctuations exceeds a hydrodynamic length set by the membrane and
bulk viscosities.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures and 2 additional pages of supplemen
Spontaneous breaking of the Fermi surface symmetry in the t-J model: a numerical study
We present a variational Monte Carlo (VMC) study of spontaneous Fermi surface
symmetry breaking in the t-J model. We find that the variational energy of a
Gutzwiller projected Fermi sea is lowered by allowing for a finite asymmetry
between the x- and the y-directions. However, the best variational state
remains a pure superconducting state with d-wave symmetry, as long as the
underlying lattice is isotropic. Our VMC results are in good overall agreement
with slave boson mean field theory (SBMFT) and renormalized mean field theory
(RMFT), although apparent discrepancies do show up in the half-filled limit,
revealing some limitations of mean field theories. VMC and complementary RMFT
calculations also confirm the SBMFT predictions that many-body interactions can
enhance any anisotropy in the underlying crystal lattice. Thus, our results may
be of consequence for the description of strongly correlated superconductors
with an anisotropic lattice structure.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures; final versio
An archaeological survey of the Brainerd Mission Cemetery
The Brainerd Mission Cemetery (40HA128) was placed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1979. The cemetery is all that visibly remains of the Brainerd Mission for Cherokee Indians. Christian missionaries converted and educated Cherokee students until the tragic Trail of Tears in 1838. Today the cemetery is preserved on a one acre complex surrounded by parking lots, roads, and commercial establishments of the Eastgate Shopping Mall and Brainerd Village. The City of Chattanooga acquired the green space and parking lot north and east of the cemetery for future interpretive and educational initiatives. The Jeffery L. Brown Institute of Archaeology conducted an archaeological survey consisting of the backhoe excavation of seven trenches on these parcels. The survey was designed to generate information on the archaeological record of the property, particularly the presence of subsurface features such as unmarked historic burials. No significant cultural remains were encountered during the survey.https://scholar.utc.edu/archaeology-reports/1001/thumbnail.jp
Mean first passage times for bond formation for a Brownian particle in linear shear flow above a wall
Motivated by cell adhesion in hydrodynamic flow, here we study bond formation
between a spherical Brownian particle in linear shear flow carrying receptors
for ligands covering the boundary wall. We derive the appropriate Langevin
equation which includes multiplicative noise due to position-dependent mobility
functions resulting from the Stokes equation. We present a numerical scheme
which allows to simulate it with high accuracy for all model parameters,
including shear rate and three parameters describing receptor geometry
(distance, size and height of the receptor patches). In the case of homogeneous
coating, the mean first passage time problem can be solved exactly. In the case
of position-resolved receptor-ligand binding, we identify different scaling
regimes and discuss their biological relevance.Comment: final version after minor revision
A cutoff phenomenon in accelerated stochastic simulations of chemical kinetics via flow averaging (FLAVOR-SSA)
We present a simple algorithm for the simulation of stiff, discrete-space, continuous-time Markov processes. The algorithm is based on the concept of flow averaging for the integration of stiff ordinary and stochastic differential equations and ultimately leads to a straightforward variation of the the well-known stochastic simulation algorithm (SSA). The speedup that can be achieved by the present algorithm [flow averaging integrator SSA (FLAVOR-SSA)] over the classical SSA comes naturally at the expense of its accuracy. The error of the proposed method exhibits a cutoff phenomenon as a function of its speed-up, allowing for optimal tuning. Two numerical examples from chemical
kinetics are provided to illustrate the efficiency of the method
Charge current in ferromagnet - triplet superconductor junctions
We calculate the tunneling conductance spectra of a ferromagnetic metal /
insulator / triplet superconductor from the reflection amplitudes using the
Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formula. For the triplet superconductor, we
assume one special -wave order parameter, having line nodes, and two two
dimensional -wave order parameters with line nodes, breaking the time
reversal symmetry. Also we examine nodeless pairing potentials. The evolution
of the spectra with the exchange potential depends solely on the topology of
the gap. The weak Andreev reflection within the ferromagnet results in the
suppression of the tunneling conductance and eliminates the resonances due to
the anisotropy of the pairing potential. The tunneling spectra splits
asymmetrically with respect to under the influence of an external
magnetic field. The results can be used to distinguish between the possible
candidate pairing states of the superconductor SrRuO.Comment: 15 pages with 8 figure
Magnetic and superconducting instabilities of the Hubbard model at the van Hove filling
We use a novel temperature-flow renormalization group technique to analyze
magnetic and superconducting instabilities in the two-dimensional t-t' Hubbard
model for particle densities close to the van Hove filling as a function of the
next-nearest neighbor hopping t'. In the one-loop flow at the van Hove filling,
the characteristic temperature for the flow to strong coupling is suppressed
drastically around t'_c approx. -0.33t, suggesting a quantum critical point
between d-wave pairing at moderate t'>t'_c and ferromagnetism for t'<t'_c. Upon
increasing the particle density in the latter regime the leading instability
occurs in the triplet pairing channel.Comment: 4 pages, to appear in Physical Review Letter
Leading infrared logarithms for sigma-model with fields on arbitrary Riemann manifold
We derive non-linear recursion equation for the leading infrared logarithms
(LL) in four dimensional sigma-model with fields on an arbitrary Riemann
manifold. The derived equation allows one to compute leading infrared
logarithms to essentially unlimited loop order in terms of geometric
characteristics of the Riemann manifold.
We reduce the solution of the SU(oo) principal chiral field in arbitrary
number of dimensions in the LL approximation to the solution of very simple
recursive equation. This result paves a way to the solution of the model in
arbitrary number of dimensions at N-->ooComment: Talk given by MVP at the conference devoted to memory of A.N.
