Lamina Cribrosa and Choroid Features and Their Relationship to Stage of Pseudoexfoliation Glaucoma.
PurposeTo better understand the relationship of lamina cribrosa (LC) and choroid features to the severity of pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG).MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, 137 eyes of 122 subjects (47 eyes with moderate/advanced PXG [mean deviation (MD), -15.0 ± 7.7 dB], 34 eyes with mild PXG [MD, -2.7 ± 1.5 dB], 32 aged-matched pseudoexfoliation syndrome [PXS] eyes, and 24 aged-matched control eyes) were investigated. Optic discs, LC thickness, and anterior LC depth (ALD; midsuperior, center, and midinferior) as well as peripapillary choroidal thickness were determined. Linear mixed modeling was used to adjust for age, sex, and axial length.ResultsA progressive decrease in LC thickness was found when comparing controls (271.9 ± 61.3 μm), PXS (212.6 ± 51.5 μm), mild PXG (180.8 ± 24.6 μm), and moderate/advance PXG (138.9 ± 37.5 μm) (P < 0.001). ALD was greater (P < 0.001) in moderate/advance glaucoma (306.7 ± 105.3 μm) and mild PXG (209.5 ± 79.7 μm) compared with PXS (155 ± 86.7 μm) and healthy controls (149.2 ± 103 μm). Although eyes with moderate/advance PXG had the thinnest choroid (117.2 ± 36.6 μm), choroidal thickness was comparable in mild PXG, PXS, and controls (150.0 ± 46.1, 159.7 ± 65.5, and 157.5 ± 51.1 μm, respectively; P = 0.002). Worse MD was the only factor associated with thinner LC (β = 2.344, P < 0.001) and choroid (β = 1.717, P = 0.009 μm) in PXG eyes. Higher IOP (β = 4.305, P = 0.013) and worse MD (β = -6.390, P < 0.001) were associated with deeper ALD in PXG.ConclusionsIn pseudoexfoliation, LC thinning is an early sign, and there is progressive thinning with advancing glaucoma. Choroidal thinning is observable only with moderate/advanced glaucoma. In PXG eyes, LC thickness, depth, and peripapillary choroidal thickness are associated with glaucoma severity
Motivation-based Market Segmentation in Rural Tourism: the Case of Sámán, Iran
Market segmentation is a pivotal and under-investigated issue when evaluating decision-making processes and motivational factors shaping rural tourism. The present study has examined market segmentsof rural tourists in Iran based on their sociodemographic attributes, travel characteristics and preferred leisure activities, profiling rural tourists on the base of their motivational background. The survey results indicated that rural tourism in the study area is a heterogeneous market, whose development depends on general trends in Middle East tourism market. A comprehensive knowledge of rural tourism actors may help formulating appropriate marketing strategies for internal areas destined to tourism growth
Quality of life, Work ability and other important indicators of women's occupational health
Objectives: Work ability may be considered as an important aspect of well-being and health status. One of the most important factors in association with work ability is health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of this study has been to determine the association between work ability, individual characteristics and HRQoL of female workers. Material and Methods: The design of this study has been cross-sectional. The work ability index (WAI) and Short-Form General Health Survey (SF-12) questionnaires were used to collect data. Three hundred and twenty female workers were selected from food supplier factories in Karaj. One-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation analysis, independent sample t-test and multiple linear regression methods were used to analyze data. Results: Mean (M) and standard deviation (SD) of the WAI stood at 35.02 and 5.57, respectively. The categories of the WAI for women being as follows: 8.8 poor, 62 moderate, 25.4 good and 3.7 excellent. Mean±SD for the physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) of quality of life was 58.84±11.12 and 57.45±9.94, respectively. There was a positive significant association between the PCS and MCS with the WAI (p = 0.0001). Workers with higher education had a better work ability (p = 0.002) and shift-work workers had a worse work ability (p = 0.03). Conclusions: Work ability of majority of women was moderate. Considering mean age of studied women (27.6 years old), this work ability is not satisfactory. Physical and mental components of the HRQoL were the important factors associated with work ability
Short view of leukemia diagnosis and treatment in Iran
Background: Early diagnosis and treatment of leukemia patients remains a fundamental aim in clinical oncology, especially in developing country. Present study highlights the basic requirements of these patients in Iran. Better understanding of these issues may lead to improve the healthcare standards toward leukemia diagnosis and treatment. Methods: This descriptive study included 101 specialists in hematology-oncology and pathology serving in oncology centers. The participants were then asked to fill out a standard questionnaire on the issues around diagnosis and treatment of blood malignancies. Results: According to specialists, unfair distribution of facilities across the country, delayed diagnosis of disease, absence of psychological support for patients, and insufficient financial support were the main reasons of inappropriate diagnosis and treatment in leukemia patients. Conclusions: Our results show that making an amendment to health policies by preparing well-equipped medical centers in all provinces, improving the morale of patients through consultation during the process of treatment, and above all, subsiding leukemia patients' financial problems will promote the health standard regarding the leukemia diagnosis and treatment in Iran. © 2015, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS). Antibacterial Activity of Iranian Green and Black Tea on Streptococcus Mutans: An In Vitro Study
Objective: Dental caries is a common infectious disease.Streptococcus mutans is the prevalent decay microorganism. The anti Streptococcus mutans activity of non fermented and semi-fermented tea has been shown. The aim of this study was to determine the anti Streptococcus mutans activity of Iranian green and black tea (non fermented and fermented type).Materials and Methods: The study was experimental. The aerial parts of wild-growing Camellia sinensis were collected from Lahijan province. The methanolic extract of green and black tea were examined on Streptococcus mutans (ATCC3566). Five different concentrations (50mg/ml, 100mg/ml, 200mg/ml, 300mg/ml and 400 mg/ml) of tea extracts were tested using the well assay method. The agar dilution method recommended by the NCCLS standards (National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards) was used. Theminimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined as the lowest concentration of extract inhibiting visible growth of the organism on the agar media plate. Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was detected from MIC.Results: The Iranian green and black tea had an antibacterial effect on 100 to 400 mg/ml concentrations. The minimum inhibitory concentration of green and black tea was 150 and 50 mg/ml, respectively. The mean diameter of inhibition zone were 9.5 mm and 10.9 mm for methanolic extract of green and black tea, respectively.Conclusion: Both Iranian non fermented (green tea) and fermented (black tea) have anti Streptococcus mutans activity in vitro. The anti Streptococcus mutans activity of black tea appears on a lower concentration than green tea
Virial mass in DGP brane cosmology
We study the virial mass discrepancy in the context of a DPG brane-world
scenario and show that such a framework can offer viable explanations to
account for the mass discrepancy problem. This is done by defining a
geometrical mass that we prove to be proportional to the virial
mass. Estimating using observational data, we show that it
behaves linearly with and has a value of the order of , pointing
to a possible resolution of the virial mass discrepancy. We also obtain the
radial velocity dispersion of galaxy clusters and show that it is compatible
with the radial velocity dispersion profile of such clusters. This velocity
dispersion profile can be used to differentiate various models predicting the

Efficiency of multi walled carbon nanotubes for removing Direct Blue 71 from aqueous solutions
Dye wastewater produced from industrial activity is usually toxic, resistant to biodegradation and persistent in the environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) for decolorization of Direct Blue 71 (DB71). In this experimental study, the effect of various variables including contact time, solution pH, adsorbent dose, and initial dye concentration was evaluated in a batch reactor. The adsorption and kinetic models were evaluated to explain the adsorbed dye and dynamic reaction. The results of this study showed that the efficiency of dye removal increased, as the contact time and adsorbent dose increased, but as pH and initial dye concentration increased, removal efficiency decreased. The maximum efficiency of Direct Blue 71 removal was observed at acidic solution (pH=3), contact time of 90 minutes, adsorbent dose of 0.6 g/l and initial dye concentration of 25 mg/l. The adsorption of direct blue 71 best fitted the Langmuir isotherm (R2=0.87) and pseudo first order kinetic equation (R2=0.99). According to the results obtained, multiwalled nanotubes was offered as an effective adsorbent for removing direct blue 71. © Authors
Hybrid dispersion laser scanner.
Laser scanning technology is one of the most integral parts of today's scientific research, manufacturing, defense, and biomedicine. In many applications, high-speed scanning capability is essential for scanning a large area in a short time and multi-dimensional sensing of moving objects and dynamical processes with fine temporal resolution. Unfortunately, conventional laser scanners are often too slow, resulting in limited precision and utility. Here we present a new type of laser scanner that offers ∼1,000 times higher scan rates than conventional state-of-the-art scanners. This method employs spatial dispersion of temporally stretched broadband optical pulses onto the target, enabling inertia-free laser scans at unprecedented scan rates of nearly 100 MHz at 800 nm. To show our scanner's broad utility, we use it to demonstrate unique and previously difficult-to-achieve capabilities in imaging, surface vibrometry, and flow cytometry at a record 2D raster scan rate of more than 100 kHz with 27,000 resolvable points
