Spatially and Temporally Explicit Energy System Modelling to Support the Transition to a Low Carbon Energy Infrastructure – Case Study for Wind Energy in the UK
Renewable energy sources and electricity demand vary with time and space and the energy system is constrained by the location of the current infrastructure in place. The transitioning to a low carbon energy society can be facilitated by combining long term planning of infrastructure with taking spatial and temporal characteristics of the energy system into account. There is a lack of studies addressing this systemic view. We soft-link two models in order to analyse long term investment decisions in generation, transmission and storage capacities and the effects of short-term fluctuation of renewable supply: The national energy system model UKTM (UK TIMES model) and a dispatch model. The modelling approach combines the benefits of two models: an energy system model to analyse decarbonisation pathways and a power dispatch model that can evaluate the technical feasibility of those pathways and the impact of intermittent renewable energy sources on the power market. Results give us the technical feasibility of the UKTM solution from 2010 until 2050. This allows us to determine lower bounds of flexible elements and feeding them back in an iterative process (e.g. storage, demand side control, balancing). We apply the methodology to study the long-term investments of wind infrastructure in the United Kingdom
Anisotropic Distribution of SDSS Satellite Galaxies: Planar (not Polar) Alignment
The distribution of satellite galaxies relative to isolated host galaxies in
the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is investigated. Host-satellite systems are
selected using three different methods, yielding samples of ~3300, ~1600, and
\~950 satellites. In the plane of the sky, the distributions of all three
samples show highly significant deviations from circular symmetry (> 99.99%, >
99.99%, and 99.79% confidence levels, respectively), and the degree of
anisotropy is a strong function of the projected radius, r_p, at which the
satellites are found. For r_p < 100 kpc, the SDSS satellites are aligned
preferentially with the major axes of the hosts. This is in stark contrast to
the Holmberg effect, in which satellites are aligned with the minor axes of
host galaxies. The degree of anisotropy in the distribution of the SDSS
satellites decreases with r_p and is consistent with an isotropic distribution
at of order the 1-sigma level for 250 kpc < r_p < 500 kpc.Comment: ApJ Letters (in press); Discussion section substantially revised,

The swept angle retarding mass spectrometer: Initial results from the Michigan auroral probe sounding rocket
Data from a sounding rocket flight of the swept angle retarding ion mass spectrometer (SARIMS) are presented to demonstrate the capability of the instrument to make measurements of thermal ions which are differential in angle, energy, and mass. The SARIMS was flown on the Michigan auroral probe over regions characterized first by discrete auroral arcs and later by diffuse precipitation. The instrument measured the temperature, densities, and flow velocities of the ions NO(+) and O(+). Measured NO(+) densities ranged from 10 to the 5th power up to 3 x 10 to the 5th power ions/cu cm, while the measured O(+) densities were a factor of 5-10 less. Ion temperatures ranged from 0.15 up to 0.33 eV. Eastward ion flows approximately 0.5 km/sec were measured near the arcs, and the observed flow magnitude decreased markedly inside the arcs

Predictions of children’s emotionality from evolutionary and epigenetic hypotheses
Sex-dependent effects of mismatched prenatal-postnatal maternal conditions are predicted by combining two evolutionary hypotheses: that foetal conditions provide a forecast of likely postnatal environments (Predictive Adaptive Response), and that the female foetus is better adapted than the male to maternal adversity (Trivers-Willard hypothesis). Animal studies have implicated glucocorticoid mechanisms modifiable by effects of postnatal tactile stimulation on glucocorticoid receptor gene expression. In this study we examined behavioural predictions in humans based on these evolutionary and epigenetic models. Mothers in a general population cohort provided self-reported anxiety scores at 20 weeks pregnancy, and at 9 weeks, 14 months and 3.5 years postpartum, and frequency of infant stroking at 9 weeks. Mothers and teachers reported child symptoms at 7 years. SEM models with maximum-likelihood estimates made use of data from 887 participants. There was a three-way interaction between prenatal and postnatal anxiety and maternal stroking in the prediction of irritability, seen only in girls. This arose because lower maternal stroking was associated with higher irritability, only in the mismatched, low-high and high-low maternal anxiety groups. We provide evidence that mechanisms likely to have evolved well before the emergence of humans, contribute to the development of children’s emotionality and risk for depression
Masculinity, Meat, and Veg*nism: A Scoping Review.
Men historically consume more meat than women, show fewer intentions to reduce meat consumption, and are underrepresented among vegans and vegetarians. Eating meat strongly aligns with normative masculinities, decisively affirming that "real men" eat meat and subordinating men who choose to be veg*n (vegan or vegetarian). The emergence of meat alternatives and increasing environmental concerns may contest these long-standing masculine norms and hierarchies. The current scoping review addresses the research question what are the connections between masculinities and men's attitudes and behaviors toward meat consumption and veg*nism? Using keywords derived from two key concepts, "men" and "meat," 39 articles were selected and analyzed to inductively derive three thematic findings; (a) Meat as Masculine, (b) Veg*n Men as Othered, and (c) Veg*nism as Contemporary Masculinity. Meat as Masculine included how men's gendered identities, defenses, and physicalities were entwined with meat consumption. Veg*n Men as Othered explored the social and cultural challenges faced by men who adopt meatless diets, including perceptions of emasculation. Veg*nism as Contemporary Masculinity was claimed by men who eschewed meat in their diets and advocated for veg*nism as legitimate masculine capital through linkages to physical strength, rationality, self-determination, courage, and discipline. In light of the growing concern about the ecological impact of meat production and the adverse health outcomes associated with its excessive consumption, this review summarizes empirical connections between masculinities and the consumption of meat to consider directions for future men's health promotion research, policy, and practice
Recent changes in area and thickness of Torngat Mountain glaciers (northern Labrador, Canada)
The Torngat Mountains National Park, northern Labrador, Canada, contains more
than 120 small glaciers: the only remaining glaciers in continental northeast
North America. These small cirque glaciers exist in a unique topo-climatic
setting, experiencing temperate maritime summer conditions yet very cold and
dry winters, and may provide insights into the deglaciation dynamics of
similar small glaciers in temperate mountain settings. Due to their size and
remote location, very little information exists regarding the health of these
glaciers. Just a single study has been published on the contemporary
glaciology of the Torngat Mountains, focusing on net mass balances from 1981
to 1984. This paper addresses the extent to which glaciologically relevant
climate variables have changed in northern Labrador in concert with
20th-century Arctic warming, and how these changes have affected Torngat Mountain
glaciers. Field surveys and remote-sensing analyses were used to measure
regional glacier area loss of 27 % from 1950 to 2005, substantial rates of
ice surface thinning (up to 6 m yr−1) and volume losses at Abraham,
Hidden, and Minaret glaciers, between 2005 and 2011. Glacier mass balances
appear to be controlled by variations in winter precipitation and,
increasingly, by strong summer and autumn atmospheric warming since the
early 1990s, though further observations are required to fully understand
mass balance sensitivities. This study provides the first comprehensive
contemporary assessment of Labrador glaciers and will inform both regional
impact assessments and syntheses of global glacier mass balance
