n-Ary quasigroups of order 4
We characterize the set of all N-ary quasigroups of order 4: every N-ary
quasigroup of order 4 is permutably reducible or semilinear. Permutable
reducibility means that an N-ary quasigroup can be represented as a composition
of K-ary and (N-K+1)-ary quasigroups for some K from 2 to N-1, where the order
of arguments in the representation can differ from the original order. The set
of semilinear N-ary quasigroups has a characterization in terms of Boolean

Regression methods in pricing American and Bermudan options using consumption processes
Here we develop methods for e±cient pricing multidimensional discrete-time American and Bermudan options by using regression based algorithms together with a new approach towards constructing upper bounds for the price of the option. Applying the sample space with payoffs at the optimal stopping times, we propose sequential estimates for continuation values, values of the consumption process, and stopping times on the sample paths. The approach admits constructing both low and upper bounds for the price by Monte Carlo simulations. Hypervelocity runaways from the Large Magellanic Cloud
We explore the possibility that the observed population of Galactic
hypervelocity stars (HVSs) originate as runaway stars from the Large Magellanic
Cloud (LMC). Pairing a binary evolution code with an N-body simulation of the
interaction of the LMC with the Milky Way, we predict the spatial distribution
and kinematics of an LMC runaway population. We find that runaway stars from
the LMC can contribute Galactic HVSs at a rate of . This is composed of stars at different points of
stellar evolution, ranging from the main-sequence to those at the tip of the
asymptotic giant branch. We find that the known B-type HVSs have kinematics
which are consistent with an LMC origin. There is an additional population of
hypervelocity white dwarfs whose progenitors were massive runaway stars.
Runaways which are even more massive will themselves go supernova, producing a
remnant whose velocity will be modulated by a supernova kick. This latter
scenario has some exotic consequences, such as pulsars and supernovae far from
star-forming regions, and a small rate of microlensing from compact sources

Characterisation of dairy soiled water in a survey of 60 Irish dairy farms
peer-reviewedDairy farming in Ireland generates an effluent known as dairy soiled water (DSW), which consists of a relatively dilute mixture of cow faeces, urine, spilt milk and detergents that is typically applied to grassland. However, relatively little is known about the volumes generated, nutrient content and management factors that influence volume and concentration. Sixty dairy farms that had a separate storage tank for storing DSW were selected for this study. The spatial distribution of the farms reflected the spatial distribution of dairy cows across the 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland, with each farm representing between 10,000 and 20,000 dairy cows. Samples were analysed for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), ammonium N (NH4-N), total nitrogen (TN), potassium (K), phosphorus (molybdate-reactive and total) (MRP and TP) and dry matter (DM) content. Management characteristics and parlour properties were quantified. Factors influencing volume and concentration of DSW were determined using mixed model multiple regression analysis. On average, 9784 l (standard error 209 l) of DSW, including rainfall, was produced cow−1 year−1 and this contained significant quantities of total N, P and K (587, 80 and 568 mg l−1, respectively). A typical Irish dairy farm stocked at 1.9 cows ha−1 could therefore supply approximately 13, 2 and 12 kg ha−1 of total N, P and K, respectively, across the farm, annually to meet some of the nutrient requirements for herbage production and potentially replace some of the synthetic fertilizer use. Seventy one percent of samples were within the regulated concentration limits of soiled water for BOD (<2500 mg l−1), rising to 87% during the closed period for slurry spreading (mid October to mid-late January), while 81% were within the concentration limits for DM (<1% DM), rising to 94% during the closed period. The efficiency of a milking parlour (cows per unit, time taken) plays a key role in determining the volume of DSW generated. This, in turn, also influences the concentration of nutrients and other chemicals. Large variability was found in nutrient concentrations and this presents a challenge for effective nutrient management to maximise the fertilizer replacement value of DSW
The time course of routine action
Previous studies of action selection in routinized tasks have used error rates as their sole dependent measure (e.g. Reason, 1979; Schwartz et al., 1998). Consequently, conclusions about the underlying mechanisms of correct behavior are necessarily indirect. The present experiment examines the performance of normal subjects in the prototypical coffee task (Botvinick & Plaut, 2004) when carried out in a virtual environment on screen. This has the advantage of (a) constraining the possible errors more tightly than a real world environment, and (b) giving access to latencies as an additional, finer grained measure of performance. We report error data and timing of action selection at the crucial branching points for the production of routinized task sequences both with and without a secondary task. Processing branching points leads to increased latencies. The presence of the secondary task has a greater effect on latencies at branching points than at equivalent non-branching points. Furthermore, error data and latencies dissociate, suggesting that the exact timing is a valid and valuable source of information when trying to understand the processes that govern routine tasks. The results of the experiment are discussed in relation to their implication for computational accounts of routine action selection
Improved impact performance of marine sandwich panels using through-thickness reinforcement: Experimental results
This paper presents results from a test developed to simulate the water impact
(slamming) loading of sandwich boat structures. A weighted elastomer ball is
dropped from increasing heights onto rigidly supported panels until damage is
detected. Results from this test indicate that honeycomb core sandwich panels,
the most widely used material for racing yacht hulls, start to damage due to
core crushing at impact energies around 550 J. Sandwich panels of the same areal
weight and with the same carbon/epoxy facings but using a novel foam core
reinforced in the thickness direction with pultruded carbon fibre pins, do not
show signs of damage until above 1200 J impact energy. This suggests that these
will offer significantly improved resistance to wave impact. Quasi-static test
results cannot be used to predict impact resistance here as the crush strength
of the pinned foam is more sensitive to loading rate than that of the honeycomb
core
