Discovery of a flux-related change of the cyclotron line energy in Her X-1
We present the results of ten years of repeated measurements of the Cyclotron
Resonance Scattering Feature (CRSF) in the spectrum of the binary X-ray pulsar
Her X-1 and report the discovery of a positive correlation of the centroid
energy of this absorption feature in pulse phase averaged spectra with source
luminosity.Our results are based on a uniform analysis of observations bythe
RXTE satellite from 1996 to 2005, using sufficiently long observations of 12
individual 35-day Main-On states of the source. The mean centroid energy E_c of
the CRSF in pulse phase averaged spectra of Her X-1 during this time is around
40 keV, with significant variations from one Main-On state to the next. We find
that the centroid energy of the CRSF in Her X-1 changes by ~5% in energy for a
factor of 2 in luminosity. The correlation is positive, contrary to what is
observed in some high luminosity transient pulsars. Our finding is the first
significant measurement of a positive correlation between E_c and luminosity in
any X-ray pulsar. We suggest that this behaviour is expected in the case of
sub-Eddington accretion and present a calculation of a quantitative estimate,
which is very consistent with the effect observed in Her X-1.We urge that Her
X-1 is regularly monitored further and that other X-ray pulsars are

INTEGRAL observations of V0332+53 in outburst
We present the analysis of a 100ksec Integral(3-100kev) observation of the
transient X-ray pulsar V0332+53 inoutburst. The source is pulsating at
P=4.3751+/-0.0002s with a clear double pulse from 6 kev to 60 kev. The average
flux was ~550mCrab between 20 kev and 60 kev. We modeled the broad band
continuum from 5 kev to 100 kev with a power-law modified by an exponential cut
off. We observe three cyclotron lines: the fundamental line at 24.9+/-0.1 kev,
the first harmonic at 50.5+/-0.1 kev as well as the second harmonic
at71.7+/-0.8 kev, thus confirming the discovery of the harmonic lines by Coburn

The quantization of the symplectic groupoid of the standard Podles sphere
We give an explicit form of the symplectic groupoid that integrates the
semiclassical standard Podles sphere. We show that Sheu's groupoid, whose
convolution C*-algebra quantizes the sphere, appears as the groupoid of the
Bohr-Sommerfeld leaves of a (singular) real polarization of the symplectic
groupoid. By using a complex polarization we recover the convolution algebra on
the space of polarized sections. We stress the role of the modular class in the
definition of the scalar product in order to get the correct quantum space.Comment: 33 pages; minor correction
Hematogenous dissemination of pathogenic and non-pathogenic Leptospira in a short-term murine model of infection
Leptospirosis is an emerging zoonosis caused by pathogenic Leptospira spp. Because rodents are natural hosts of Leptospira, rodent models of pathogenesis have been limited, but are valuable to understand infection in reservoir animals even in the absence of disease. Mouse models of infection provide advantages due to genetic tractability, so developing murine models of Leptospira infection is crucial for further understanding the biology of this organism. Previously our laboratory developed a short-term murine model of Borrelia burgdorferi hematogenous dissemination to investigate the role of adhesion proteins on bacterial survival and dissemination within a host. Here we adapt this model to Leptospira. C3H/HeJ mice are anesthetized, inoculated intravenously, and then bacteria are allowed to circulate for up to twenty-four hours. Mice are euthanized, perfused with saline, and tissues are harvested for culture and DNA purification. Bacterial burdens are determined by quantitative PCR. Reproducible burdens of bacteria were found in tissues upon inoculation with pathogens and non-pathogens, demonstrating the utility of this model to probe different Leptospira species and strains. Pathogenic L. interrogans has a significantly higher burden in blood, liver, kidney, and bladder at one-hour post-inoculation when compared to non-pathogenic L. biflexa. Colonization of the kidney is essential to the life cycle of pathogenic Leptospira in nature. Measurable burdens of non-pathogenic L. biflexa were found in numerous organs and live leptospires were recovered from blood samples for at least three hours post-inoculation, contrary to the previous belief that non-pathogenic leptospires are rapidly cleared. This short-term murine model of Leptospira hematogenous dissemination will allow for the interrogation of virulence factors potentially important for tissue colonization and evasion of host defenses, and represents a novel animal model for investigating determinants of Leptospira infection
INTEGRAL observation of the high-mass X-ray transient V 0332+53 during the 2005 outburst decline
The decline of the high mass X-ray transient V 0332+53 during the Dec. 2004 to Feb. 2005 outburst is analysed from the data recorded by INTEGRAL. The flux is shown to decrease exponentially until 2005 Feb. 10, with a decay time scale of âŒ30 days above 20 keV and âŒ20 days at lower energies, and to decrease linearly thereafter.
The energy spectrum is well modelled throughout the decay by a power law with a folding energy of âŒ7.5 keV, and with two cyclotron absorption features. The folding energy does not vary significantly over the decay, but the spectrum becomes harder with time. Most importantly, we show that the parameters describing the fundamental cyclotron line around 27 keV do vary with time: its energy and depth increase (by about 17% for the energy in âŒ6 weeks), while its width decreases. These changes of the cyclotron line parameters are interpreted as resulting from a change in the extent of the cyclotron scattering region.
Two quasi-periodic oscillations are also observed at various times during the observations, one at 0.05 Hz and another one near the pulsation frequency around 0.23 Hz

Discovery of a Cyclotron Resonant Scattering Feature in the RXTE Spectrum of 4U 0352+309 (X Per)
We have discovered a ~29 keV Cyclotron Resonant Scattering Feature (CRSF) in
the X-Ray spectrum of 4U 0352+309 (X Per) using observations taken with the
Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. 4U 0352+309 is a persistent low luminosity (L_x =
4.2x10^34 ergs/s) X-ray pulsar, with a 837 s period and which accretes material
from the Be star X Per. The X-Ray spectrum, unusual when compared to brighter
accreting pulsars, may be due to the low mass accretion rate and could be
typical of the new class of persistent low luminosity Be/X-Ray binary pulsars.
We attempted spectral fits with continuum models used historically for 4U
0352+309, and found that all were improved by the addition of a CRSF at ~29
keV. The model that best fit the observations is a combination of a 1.45+/-0.02
keV blackbody with a 5.4x10^8 cm^2 area, and a power-law with a 1.83+/-0.03
photon index modified by the CRSF. In these fits the CRSF energy is
28.6+1.5-1.7 keV, implying a magnetic field strength of 2.5(1+z)x10^12 G in the
scattering region (where z is the gravitational redshift). Phase resolved
analysis shows that the blackbody and cyclotron line energies are consistent

Diffuse Galactic Soft Gamma-Ray Emission
The Galactic diffuse soft gamma-ray (30-800 keV) emission has been measured
from the Galactic Center by the HIREGS balloon-borne germanium spectrometer to
determine the spectral characteristics and origin of the emission. The
resulting Galactic diffuse continuum is found to agree well with a single
power-law (plus positronium) over the entire energy range, consistent with RXTE
and COMPTEL/CGRO observations at lower and higher energies, respectively. We
find no evidence of spectral steepening below 200 keV, as has been reported in
previous observations. The spatial distribution along the Galactic ridge is
found to be nearly flat, with upper limits set on the longitudinal gradient,
and with no evidence of an edge in the observed region. The soft gamma-ray
diffuse spectrum is well modeled by inverse Compton scattering of interstellar
radiation off of cosmic-ray electrons, minimizing the need to invoke
inefficient nonthermal bremsstrahlung emission. The resulting power requirement
is well within that provided by Galactic supernovae. We speculate that the
measured spectrum provides the first direct constraints on the cosmic-ray
electron spectrum below 300 MeV.Comment: 26 pages, 7 figure, submitted to Ap
