Senior thesis, Kansas State Agricultural College, 1905.Morse Department of Special CollectionsIntroduction: In considering the Counter -reformation in the Catholic Church, it will be necessary briefly to look to the conditions of Church and people preceding that movement, and to the causes leading up to it. The Renaissance had spread from sunny Italy to her European neighbors, opening to the people new avenues of thought and action. Having been hitherto under restraint, they sought to break away from the authority that galled them. Wickliffe had stirred the English people with his utterances against the arrogance of the popes, declaring them to be antichrist (1377). He declared that Christ was the King of the Church. He denied the right of the popes to English territory. His teachings spread to the continent, and John Huss, in Bohemia (1412), demanded a reconstruction of the Church, after a thorough search of Holy Writ for the actual bases of Christianity, the Scriptures to be used as final authority. He insisted that an honest effort be made to satisfy all the requirements of soul and conscience. He and others found many reasons why such demands should be made. The immorality and worldliness of the popes had again and again scandalized the Old World. The clergy had become a separate caste, making and administering their own laws. Exempt from lay interference, they could escape punishment for the most flagrant violations of state law. Yet they would not exempt the laity from the laws of the Church, even though; the power they now had and the privileges they enjoyed had originally come from the people, whom they now oppressed
16 x 25 Ge:Ga Detector Arrays for FIFI LS
We are developing two-dimensional 16 x 25 pixel detector arrays of both
unstressed and stressed Ge:Ga photoconductive detectors for far-infrared
astronomy from SOFIA. The arrays, based on earlier 5 x 5 detector arrays used
on the KAO, will be for our new instrument, the Far Infrared Field Imaging Line
Spectrometer (FIFI LS). The unstressed Ge:Ga detector array will cover the
wavelength range from 40 to 120 microns, and the stressed Ge:Ga detector array
from 120 to 210 microns. The detector arrays will be operated with multiplexed
integrating amplifiers with cryogenic readout electronics located close to the
detector arrays. The design of the stressed detector array and results of
current measurements on several prototype 16 pixel linear arrays are reported.
They demonstrate the feasibility of the current concept. ***This paper does not

Stressed detector arrays for airborne astronomy
The development of stressed Ge:Ga detector arrays for far-infrared astronomy from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) is discussed. Researchers successfully constructed and used a three channel detector array on five flights from the KAO, and have conducted laboratory tests of a two-dimensional, 25 elements (5x5) detector array. Each element of the three element array performs as well as the researchers' best single channel detector, as do the tested elements of the 25 channel system. Si photocathode with Ag-supported dendritic Cu catalyst for CO2 reduction
Si photocathodes integrated with Ag-supported dendritic Cu catalysts are used to perform light-driven reduction of CO2 to C2 and C3 products in aqueous solution. A back illumination geometry with an n-type Si absorber was used to permit the use of absorbing metallic catalysts. Selective carrier collection was accomplished by a p+ implantation on the illumination side and an n+ implantation followed by atomic layer deposition of TiO2 on the electrolyte site. The Ag-supported dendritic Cu CO2 reduction catalyst was formed by evaporation of Ag followed by high-rate electrodeposition of Cu to form a high surface area structure. Under simulated 1 sun illumination in 0.1 M CsHCO3 saturated with CO2, the photovoltage generated by the Si (∼600 mV) enables C2 and C3 products to be produced at -0.4 vs. RHE. Texturing of both sides of the Si increases the light-limited current density, due to reduced reflection on the illumination side, and also deceases the onset potential. Under simulated diurnal illumination conditions photocathodes maintain over 60% faradaic efficiency to hydrocarbon and oxygenate products (mainly ethylene, ethanol, propanol) for several days. After 10 days of testing, contamination from the counter electrode is observed, which causes an increase in hydrogen production. This effect is mitigated by a regeneration procedure which restores the original catalyst selectivity. A tandem, self-powered CO2 reduction device was formed by coupling a Si photocathode with two series-connected semitransparent CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cells, achieving an efficiency for the conversion of sunlight to hydrocarbons and oxygenates of 1.5% (3.5% for all products)
Intrathoracic prosthesis in children in preventing post-pneumonectomy syndrome: Its role in congenital single lung and post-pneumonectomy situations
Background:
Postpneumopnectomy syndrome (PPS) is an extreme rotation and malposition of mediastinum causing dynamic and symptomatic central airway compression, arising after pneumonectomy or more uncommonly, in congenital single-lung physiology. Affected patients present with severe respiratory compromise. Intrathoracic prosthesis placement is an evolving technique in children that mitigate the effects of thoracic dead space. /
Research Question:
Assessment of clinical recovery and functional benefit in children undergoing placement of intrathoracic prosthesis following pneumonectomy or in congenital single lung situations. /
Study Design and Methods:
Retrospective chart review of patients at Great Ormond Street Hospital from 2010 and 2020 was performed of all patients who underwent intrathoracic tissue expander placement. We summarize the outcomes of twenty-four children, including those with both congenital and postpneumonectomy PPS etiology. /
Results:
24 children who underwent placement of intrathoracic prosthesis for PPS in the study period with median age of 3.5 months and weight of 5 kg. Single lung etiology was congenital in 15 children (6 agenesis, 9 hypoplasia), and postpneumonectomy in 9 children. In seven patients, there was associated long segment tracheal stenosis. Pre-operative ECMO was required in 2 patients, and pre-operative ventilation was required in 12 patients – all of whom had congenital single lung. Intrathoracic prosthesis placement was concurrent with intracardiac repair in 5 patients. There were no operative deaths, but one early postoperative death related to septicaemia. Median follow up was 75 months with 10 patients on continued respiratory support and 3 on nocturnal support with good quality of life. Two children needed reoperations for replacement of prosthesis. /
Conclusion:
The use of tissue expanders is within the armamentarium of most plastic surgeons’ practice. We also therefore advocate for a collaborative team approach involving Plastic and Cardiothoracic Surgery for surgical treatment of these patients. This multidisciplinary strategy has improved management of this rare and debilitating condition of PPS, thereby offering significant improvements in general progress of these sick children having single lung physiology. Evidence is still lacking on functional outcomes in these children and further work is necessary to prove that this is indeed achievable

Knockdown of Ant2 Reduces Adipocyte Hypoxia And Improves Insulin Resistance in Obesity.
Decreased adipose tissue oxygen tension and increased HIF-1α expression can trigger adipose tissue inflammation and dysfunction in obesity. Our current understanding of obesity-associated decreased adipose tissue oxygen tension is mainly focused on changes in oxygen supply and angiogenesis. Here, we demonstrate that increased adipocyte O2 demand, mediated by ANT2 activity, is the dominant cause of adipocyte hypoxia. Deletion of adipocyte Ant2 improves obesity-induced intracellular adipocyte hypoxia by decreasing obesity-induced adipocyte oxygen demand, without effects on mitochondrial number or mass, or oligomycin-sensitive respiration. This led to decreased adipose tissue HIF-1α expression and inflammation with improved glucose tolerance and insulin resistance in both a preventative or therapeutic setting. Our results suggest that ANT2 may be a target for the development of insulin sensitizing drugs and that ANT2 inhibition might have clinical utility
First bolometric measurement of the two neutrino double beta decay of Mo with a ZnMoO crystals array
The large statistics collected during the operation of a ZnMoO array, for
a total exposure of 1.3 kg day of Mo, allowed the first
bolometric observation of the two neutrino double beta decay of Mo. The
observed spectrum of each crystal was reconstructed taking into account the
different background contributions due to environmental radioactivity and
internal contamination. The analysis of coincidences between the crystals
allowed the assignment of constraints to the intensity of the different
background sources, resulting in a reconstruction of the measured spectrum down
to an energy of 300 keV. The half-life extracted from the data is

TeO bolometers with Cherenkov signal tagging: towards next-generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiments
CUORE, an array of 988 TeO bolometers, is about to be one of the most
sensitive experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Its
sensitivity could be further improved by removing the background from
radioactivity. A few years ago it has been pointed out that the signal from
s can be tagged by detecting the emitted Cherenkov light, which is not
produced by s. In this paper we confirm this possibility. For the first
time we measured the Cherenkov light emitted by a CUORE crystal, and found it
to be 100 eV at the -value of the decay. To completely reject the
background, we compute that one needs light detectors with baseline noise below
20 eV RMS, a value which is 3-4 times smaller than the average noise of the
bolometric light detectors we are using. We point out that an improved light
detector technology must be developed to obtain TeO bolometric experiments
able to probe the inverted hierarchy of neutrino masses.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Added referee correction
Stressed Ge:Ga photoconductors for space-based astronomy. (Is there life beyond 120 micron)
Information is given in viewgraph form. Information is given on the characteristics of stressed Ge:Ga, a spring type stress cavity, mounting hardware, materials parameters affecting dark current, and the behavior of low dark current stressed Ge:Ga. It is concluded that detectors exist today for background-limited detection at 200 microns, that researchers are narrowing in on the significant parameters that effect dark current in stressed photoconductors, that these findings may be applied to other photoconductor materials, and that some creative problem solving for an ionizing effect reset mechanism is needed
