H-->WW as the discovery mode for a light Higgs boson

    Get PDF
The production cross section for a m_H=115 GeV, SM Higgs boson in weak boson fusion at the LHC is sizable. However, the branching fraction for H-->WW is expected to be relatively small. The signal, with its two forward jets, is sufficiently different from the main backgrounds that a signal to background ratio of better than 1:1 can nevertheless be obtained, with large enough rate to allow for a 5 sigma signal with 35 fb^{-1} of data. The H-->WW signal in weak boson fusion may thus prove to be the discovery mode for the Higgs boson at the LHC.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, uses revte

Search for Physics Beyond the Standard Model

We survey some recent ideas and progress in looking for particle physics beyond the Standard Model, connected by the theme of Supersymmetry (SUSY). We review the success of SUSY-GUT models, the expected experimental signatures and present limits on SUSY partner particles, and Higgs phenomenology in the minimal SUSY model.Comment: Standard Latex file. 18 pages without figures. Model-independent limits on four-fermion contact interactions at LC with polarization

Fermion compositeness, and other types of new physics that can be described by the exchange of very massive particles, can manifest themselves as the result of an effective four-fermion contact interaction. In the case of the processes e+e−→μ+μ−,τ+τ−,bˉbe^+e^-\to \mu^+\mu^-,\tau^+\tau^-,\bar{b}b and cˉc\bar{c}c at future e+e−e^+e^- colliders with s=0.5−1\sqrt{s}=0.5-1 TeV, we examine the sensitivity to four-fermion contact interactions of two new integrated observables, σ+\sigma_+ and σ−\sigma_-, conveniently defined for such kind of analysis. We find that, if longitudinal polarization of the electron beam were available, these observables would offer the opportunity to separate the helicity cross sections and, in this way, to derive model-independent bounds on the relevant parameters.Comment: 13 pages, LaTe

How accurately can one test CPT conservation with reactor and solar neutrino experiments?

    Get PDF
We show that the combined data from solar neutrino experiments and from the KamLAND reactor neutrino experiment can establish an upper limit on, or detect, potential CPT violation in the neutrino sector of order 10^{-20} GeV to 10^{-21} GeV

Production of two ccˉc \bar c pairs in gluon-gluon scattering in high energy proton-proton collisions

We calculate cross sections for gg→QQˉQQˉg g \to Q \bar Q Q \bar Q in the high-energy approximation in the mixed (longitudinal momentum fraction, impact parameter) and momentum space representations. Besides the total cross section as a function of subsystem energy also differential distributions (in quark rapidity, transverse momentum, QQQ Q, QQˉQ \bar Q invariant mass) are presented. The elementary cross section is used to calculate production of (ccˉ)(ccˉ)(c \bar c) (c \bar c) in single-parton scattering (SPS) in proton-proton collisions. We present integrated cross section as a function of proton-proton center of mass energy as well as differential distribution in M(ccˉ)(ccˉ)M_{(c \bar c)(c \bar c)}. The results are compared with corresponding results for double-parton scattering (DPS) discussed recently in the literature. We find that the considered SPS contribution to (ccˉ)(ccˉ)(c \bar c)(c \bar c) production is at high energy (s>\sqrt{s} > 5 TeV) much smaller than that for DPS contribution.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figure

    A Separate Higgs?

    Get PDF
We investigate the possibility of a multi-Higgs doublet model where the lightest neutral Higgs boson (h0h^0) decouples from the fermion sector. We are partially motivated by the four ℓ+ℓ−γγ\ell^+\ell^-\gamma\gamma events with Mγγ≃60M_{\gamma\gamma}\simeq60\,GeV recently observed by the L3 collaboration, which could be a signal for Z→(Z∗→ℓ+ℓ−)+(h0→γγ)Z\to (Z^*\to \ell^+\ell^-)+(h^0\to \gamma\gamma). Collider signatures for the additional physical Higgs bosons present in such models are discussed.Comment: 8 pages (plus 2 figures, available by request), latex, ANL-HEP-PR-92-10
