Mri findings in giant pontine capillary telangiectasis asso - ciated with a developmental venous anomaly

We report a 32-year-old woman with an exceptionally large capillary telangiectasia in the brainstem which is associated with a developmental venous anomaly (DVA). Her major problems were nystagmus in both eyes, binocular diplopia, gait abnormalities, cerebellar ataxia, slightly disturbed finger-nose test, an instable Romberg test and obvious dysartria. The diagnosis was made on the basis of specific imaging findings, and the use of gradient echo-weighted images proved to be helpful in making a differential diagnostic decision

The mucosal membrane of the oral cavity displays at times classical developmental lesions considered to be variations of normal structures rather than having disease characteristics. Of these lesions leukoedema, Fordyce granules, geographic-, fissured- and hairy tongue, median rhomboid glossitis and lingual varices were studied in 598 patients referred to the School of Dentistry, Tehran, Iran. The prevalence was studied in relation to age, gender, occupation, education, smoking habits, general health, addictions and or drug therapies. Oral developmental lesions were seen in 295 patients (49.3%). Only Fordyce granules (27,9%), fissured tongue (12,9%), leukoedema (12,5%) and hairy tongue (8,9%) had enough cases for statistical analysis. Three of these lesions increased with age but not fissured tongue. All were more common in men. After adjusting for age, the parameters education, occupation and complaints upon referral had little influence on the prevalence of the lesions. Fewer Fordyce granules were seen in oral mucosa of smoking men. Leukoedema and hairy tongue were significantly associated with smoking, leukoedema with diabetes mellitus. We conclude that there was a highly significant association between these oral lesions and age, gender and smoking. Few significant associations were found between oral lesions and general diseases

Evaluation of Parotid Glands With Real-time Ultrasound Elastography in Children

Objectives-The aim of this study was to determine the strain index for parotid glands in children by using ultrasound elastography. Methods-In this prospective study, apparently healthy children were referred from the ear-nose-throat clinic to the radiology clinic for elastographic examinations. Conventional sonographic and elastographic examinations of the parotid glands were performed. A linear 5-12-MHz transducer was used to obtain the images. Results-A total of 54 children were enrolled in this prospective study. The normal mean strain index value +/- SD for the parotid glands was 1.24 +/- 0.67 (range, 0.29-1.39) regardless of sex. The mean age of girls was 7.42 +/- 2.94 years (range, 3-14 years), and the age of boys was 8.50 +/- 3.46 years (range, 4-16 years). The strain index values for the parotid glands in boys was 1.25 +/- 0.76, and in girls it was 1.22 +/- 0.55. There was no statistically significant difference in the strain index values between girls and boys (P=.986). There was no correlation between the strain index and age (r = 0.026) or body mass index (r = 0.066). Conclusions-This study determined the mean strain index values for apparently healthy children. Such information can serve as a baseline from which pathologic parotid diseases can be diagnosed with ultrasound elastography in combination with other sonographic criteria
