Simulation of old open clusters for UVIT on ASTROSAT

Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) is one of the payloads on the first Indian multi wavelength satellite ASTROSAT expected to be launched by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in the year 2015. We have performed simulations of UV studies of old open clusters for the UVIT. The colour magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and spatial appearances have been created using 10 filters of FUV channel (130 - 180 nm) and NUV channel (200 - 300nm) available for observations on the UVIT, for three old open clusters M67, NGC 188 and NGC 6791. The CMDs are simulated for different filter combinations, and they are used to identify the loci of various evolutionary sequences, white dwarfs, blue stragglers, red giants, sub giants, turn off stars and the main sequence of the clusters. The present work helps in identifying the potential area of study in the case of three old open clusters, by considering the availability of filters and the detection limits of the instrument. We also recommend filter combinations, which can be used to detect and study the above mentioned evolutionary stages. The simulations and the results presented here are essential for the optimal use of the UVIT for studies of old open clusters.Comment: Accepted for publication in RAA; 25 pages, 19 figures, 1 tabl

A study was conducted in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu state to understand the learning styles of students. The term learning style refers to the way or method or approach by which a student learns. The study explored the possible learning style variations among agricultural, horticultural, engineering and arts & science students and their association with academic achievement. One hundred and twelve students were randomly selected from the four streams and their learning styles were analyzed. In the agricultural and horticultural streams, a majority of the students were auditory learners. They were also found to be predominantly unimodal learners. Overall, it was found that majority of the students were visual learners followed by auditory and kinesthetic style. The highest percentage of kinesthetic learners was found among engineering students. Trimodal learners scored the highest mean percentage of marks. The influence of learning styles on the academic achievements of the students did not show a significant relationship

A novel synthesis method for the elucidation of porous graphene nanosheets (PGN) from agricultural product like wood and coconut shell charcoal is reported herein. Precursors for the present study is obtained by the thermal decomposition of agricultural waste namely wood (WS) and coconut shell (CSS). The chemical modification of the carbon structures present in the samples are achieved by using a modified Hummers’ method followed by extensive sonication. Analysis of chemically treated samples with various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques revealed the presence of few layer large area graphene (PGN) with oxygen functionalities added to it. Agricultural waste material are potential precursors for the large scale synthesis of low cost graphene sheet and graphene quantum dots

Work is a central part of human life. It is the expression of the basic need to accomplish, to create, to feel satisfaction, and to feel meaningful. The rapidly changing nature of work has resulted in new and far-reaching mechanisms for management control in the form of monitoring, layoffs, and change in work rules, all of which contribute to increased levels of occupational stress. Although office work has always been stressful, several scientific studies and surveys have helped focus attention on the issue of job stress. Among the major negative effects of the job, stress is its impact on a person's self-image and self-esteem, which in turn, affects one's relationship with family, friends, and co-workers. The problems last far longer than the time we spend at work and are not easily left behind at the end of the day

Pleomorphic lipoma/ spindle cell lipoma accounts for 15 % of lipoma within extremities, confining to the superficial plain comprising lower dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Intramuscular presentation in extrimities is a rare presentation. Here is a case of deep seated pleomorphic lipoma, of forearm, both on fine needle aspiration, biopsy and IHC confirmation. 100% of benign cases of lipoma are positive for CD 34, as stated in many studies and was also positive in our case

The utility of colposcopy in detecting relapse after treatment of gynaecological malignancies

Background: Vaginal bleeding is the most common symptom of vault relapse in gynecological cancers. This symptom may be overlooked or attributed to other causes, such as atrophy, infection, or post-radiation changes. Colposcopy allows direct magnified visualization of vaginal mucosa and abnormal vasculature though its role in detecting relapse is unclear. Methods: It is a retrospective observational study of 31 patients who were referred for colposcopy and biopsy with complaints of abnormal vaginal bleeding during follow up of endometrial or cervical cancer. Results: Among 31 patients, 19 patients were diagnosed to have primary cervical cancer and 12 endometrial cancers. Primary treatment was surgery alone (n=10, 32.2%), chemo-radiation alone (n=4, 12.9%) and both (n=17, 54.8%). Abnormal colposcopic findings were atropic features (n=21, 67.7%), radiation changes (n=8, 25.8%), erosion (n=9, 29.0%), acetowhite areas (n=9, 29.0%), abnormal vessels (n=8, 25.8%) and iodine staining abnormality (n=16, 51.6%). According to Swede scoring system, 77.1% (n=24) were normal or low grade lesions, 22.6% (n=7) were high grade lesions.  Total of 6 recurrence cases identified out of which 5 cases had high grade (Swede score >7) and one had low grade (Swede score 5-7) colposcopic features. On taking Swede score cut off of 5 or more, the sensitivity of colposcopy in detecting vault recurrence is 100%, specificity 96%, positive likelihood ratio of 25%and negative likelihood ratio of 0%. Overall the accuracy of colposcopy in detecting relapse was 96.8%. Conclusions: In our experience colposcopy is worth in detecting the cause of abnormal vaginal bleeding after treatment for endometrial and cervical cancer. Swede score is a good measure to decide on taking biopsy among these patients. Furthermore, larger studies are needed for better clarification

Warmest Sea Surface Temperature Event in the South Eastern Arabian Sea over the Decade using Satellite and INS Sagardhwani Observations

    Get PDF
South Eastern Arabian Sea is well known for its prolonged and warmer sea surface temperature (>30 °C) events generally known as Arabian Sea mini warm pool occurring during the pre-monsoon periods (March-May). To study the intensity and spatial extent of the warm pool, ten years (2007-2016) of satellite-derived weekly averaged SST and in-situ data measured from INS Sagardhwani are used. The analysis is done based on the precondition ‘sea surface temperature > 30 °C’ and lasts more than a week. These analysis demonstrate the existence of a strong inter-annual variability. It is also identified that the sea surface temperature in the year 2016 is the hottest over the decade with maximum spatial coverage and prolonged period of occurrence. These anomalous events are also explained in terms of variabilities of the atmospheric water vapour and wind at the sea surface

AIM: The aim of this study was to find out the effectiveness of pretend play in improving social competence among children with autism. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were to explore the pretend play behaviors and to improve social competence through pretend play for the children with autism. METHODOLOGY : The study included 42 children with autism who were able to verbalize a word or two productively for interacting. All the children were assessed using Child Initiated Pretend Play for pretend play and Communication Deall Developmental checklist for social skills. The children were then grouped into experimental group who underwent a Learn to Play program and into the control group who were under general play based social skill training for a period of 80-100 sessions within 6 months. RESULTS : The results of the study were, 19 children of the experimental group showed presence of typical indicators of pretend play explaining there was an improvement in the pretend play skills(p<.005) and the social skills(p<.005) of the children of the experimental group post Learn to Play program. The results also show an improvement on the elaborate play and imitative actions of pretend play and social skills (p<.005) of the control group attained by general play based social skill training. Yet the effect of the pretend play on the play group was greater (d=0.8) than the control group. CONCLUSION : From the results it is evident that the Learn to Play program to develop and improve the pretend play of the children with autism is effective than the general play based social skill training. The study thus concludes that the pretend play is an effective therapeutic modality to enhance social competence of children with autism
