Properties of massive stars in four clusters of the VVV survey
The evolution of massive stars is only partly understood. Observational
constraints can be obtained from the study of massive stars located in young
massive clusters. The ESO Public Survey VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV)
discovered several new clusters hosting massive stars. We present an analysis
of massive stars in four of these new clusters. Our aim is to provide
constraints on stellar evolution and to better understand the relation between
different types of massive stars. We use the radiative transfer code CMFGEN to
analyse K-band spectra of twelve stars with spectral types ranging from O and B
to WN and WC. We derive the stellar parameters of all targets as well as
surface abundances for a subset of them. In the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram,
the Wolf-Rayet stars are more luminous or hotter than the O stars. From the
log(C/N) - log(C/He) diagram, we show quantitatively that WN stars are more
chemically evolved than O stars, WC stars being more evolved than WN stars.
Mass loss rates among Wolf-Rayet stars are a factor of 10 larger than for O
stars, in agreement with previous findings.Comment: paper accepted in New Astronom
Noncommutative geometry, topology and the standard model vacuum
As a ramification of a motivational discussion for previous joint work, in
which equations of motion for the finite spectral action of the Standard Model
were derived, we provide a new analysis of the results of the calculations
herein, switching from the perspective of Spectral triple to that of Fredholm
module and thus from the analogy with Riemannian geometry to the pre-metrical
structure of the Noncommutative geometry. Using a suggested Noncommutative
version of Morse theory together with algebraic -theory to analyse the
vacuum solutions, the first two summands of the algebra for the finite triple
of the Standard Model arise up to Morita equivalence. We also demonstrate a new
vacuum solution whose features are compatible with the physical mass matrix.Comment: 24 page
Differential mesenteric fat deposition in bovines fed on silage or concentrate is independent of glycerol membrane permeability
© The Animal Consortium 2011In the meat industry, the manipulation of fat deposition in cattle is of pivotal importance to improve production efficiency, carcass composition and ultimately meat quality. There is an increasing interest in the identification of key factors and molecular mechanisms responsible for the development of specific fat depots. This study aimed at elucidating the influence of breed and diet on adipose tissue membrane permeability and fluidity and their interplay on fat deposition in bovines. Two Portuguese autochthonous breeds, Alentejana and Barrosã, recognized as late- and early-maturing breeds, respectively, were chosen to examine the effects of breed and diet on fat deposition and on adipose membrane composition and permeability. Twenty-four male bovines from these breeds were fed on silage-based or concentrate-based diets for 11 months. Animals were slaughtered to determine their live slaughter and hot carcass weights, as well as weights of subcutaneous and visceral adipose depots. Mesenteric fat depots were excised and used to isolate adipocyte membrane vesicles where cholesterol content, fatty acid profile as well as permeability and fluidity were determined. Total accumulation of neither subcutaneous nor visceral fat was influenced by breed. In contrast, mesenteric and omental fat depots weights were higher in concentrate-fed bulls relative to silage-fed animals. Membrane fluidity and permeability to water and glycerol in mesenteric adipose tissue were found to be independent of breed and diet. Moreover, the deposition of cholesterol and unsaturated fatty acids, which may influence membrane properties, were unchanged among experimental groups. Adipose membrane lipids from the mesenteric fat depot of ruminants were rich in saturated fatty acids, and unaffected by polyunsaturated fatty acids dietary levels. Our results provide evidence against the involvement of cellular membrane permeability to glycerol on fat accumulation in mesenteric fat tissue of concentrate-fed bovines, which is consistent with the unchanged membrane lipid profile found among experimental groups.This study was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) through grant PTDC/CVT/2006/66114 and individual fellowships to Ana P. On the influence that the ground electrode diameter has in the propulsion efficiency of an asymmetric capacitor in nitrogen gas
In this work the propulsion force developed in an asymmetric capacitor will
be calculated for three different diameters of the ground electrode. The used
ion source is a small diameter wire, which generates a positive corona
discharge in nitrogen gas directed to the ground electrode. By applying the
fluid dynamic and electrostatic theories all hydrodynamic and electrostatic
forces that act on the considered geometries will be computed in an attempt to
provide a physical insight on the force mechanism that acts on the asymmetrical
capacitors, and also to understand how to increase the efficiency of

Unified model for vortex-string network evolution
We describe and numerically test the velocity-dependent one-scale (VOS)
string evolution model, a simple analytic approach describing a string network
with the averaged correlation length and velocity. We show that it accurately
reproduces the large-scale behaviour (in particular the scaling laws) of
numerical simulations of both Goto-Nambu and field theory string networks. We
explicitly demonstrate the relation between the high-energy physics approach
and the damped and non-relativistic limits which are relevant for condensed
matter physics. We also reproduce experimental results in this context and show
that the vortex-string density is significantly reduced by loop production, an
