Congenital and Hereditable Defects Which Interfere With The Reproductive Efficiency Of Domestic Cattle (Bos tarus)

    Get PDF
The terminology concerning defects or abnormalities in cattle can render confusion if there is a not a distinction between the adjectives congenital and hereditable. The word congenital is derived from the Latin words con and genitalis. Con means with or together and genitalis means to beget or reproduction. Thus the word congenital describes those conditions which are present at birth as a result of the developmental process

The Lived Experience of Retention and Progression of Black/African American Nursing Students

Despite recent strides to increase workforce diversity, nurses continue to inadequately reflect the ethnic composition of the population they serve. To effectively answer the national calls for increased diversity in the nursing workforce, there must be a greater representation of minority students studying nursing. However, minority nursing students, especially those of Black/African American descent, have less access to nursing education, poorer retention and progression rates in nursing programs, and are more likely to withdraw from programs. The existence of an increasingly diverse nursing workforce depends upon the recruitment, retention, progression, and graduation of minority students. Whereas Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) graduate the highest percentages of Black/African American students, little is known about how Black/African American nursing students experience the completion of baccalaureate nursing programs while attending a HBCU. There is a need to understand the lived experiences of Black/African American nursing students attending a HBCU, and the factors that contribute to their successful program completion. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to identify the unique experiences, common meanings, and shared practices of Black/African American senior nursing students’ retention and progression in a baccalaureate nursing program at a HBCU. Thirteen Black/African American senior nursing student participants from an HBCU in the eastern region of the United States were interviewed on two separate occasions: at the beginning and towards the end of their final semester before graduation. Thus, 26 in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted, analyzed, and interpreted using hermeneutic interpretive phenomenology. The meaning of participants’ lived experiences reflected five essential themes: a renewed sense of cultural identity, development of resilience in response to overwhelming stress, unrealistic expectations of nursing education, a sense of purpose in nursing, and self-reliance. These findings can assist nursing faculty to better understand factors of perseverance for student success. This understanding may be helpful in carefully reviewing how nursing programs are administering and developing proactive approaches and policies that are conducive to minority students’ holistic learning experiences, which may actually increase their numbers in the nursing workforce

Some Clinical Uses of Hormones in the Cow

    Get PDF
The clinical use of hormones for the augmentation of fertility in the female is of practical importance. To the Livestock breeder, the value of his stock is measured by the production of offspring. It is essential that the veterinarian have an understanding of the complex hormonal control of the estrus cycle. This knowledge is necessary to understand possible variations in length and activities of the cycle and aids in the therapeutic use of hormone products

Influence of medical gloves on fingerpad friction and feel

    Get PDF
Friction experiments were carried out sliding a fingerpad, in both a bare state and with a latex glove donned, across a force plate to determine friction levels for different contact surface conditions (dry/wet; steel/glass). Donning a glove was found to increase the friction in dry conditions, but reduce it in wet conditions. A range of vibration frequencies were found to occur during sliding and the pronounced stick-slip behaviour for a bare finger sliding on wet glass was not found to occur when a latex glove was donned. These frequencies, along with those measured in a previous study, were used to inform the design of a tactile vibration perception study utilising a vibrating platform to replicate the sensation of finger sliding. The use of gloves was found to reduce the amplitude threshold at which participants were able to perceive vibrations. This effect was more extreme for double glove use, compared to single glove use. Glove donning also reduced the ability of participants to perceive differences in the frequency of vibrations. These findings have implications for surgeons' ability to carry out tactile explorations and the protocol described in this paper can be used for future studies on the effect of glove use on feel

Finland in Crisis: Finnish Relations with the Western Democracies, 1939-1941

    Get PDF
This thesis examines Finland’s relations with Britain and the United States from 1939-1941. During this period, Finland engaged in two wars against the Soviet Union. In 1939-1940 Finland defended itself against a Soviet attack with the emotional and material support of Britain and the United States. By 1941 Finland was once again at war with the Soviet Union. The geopolitical situation had changed so significantly that Finland found itself aligned with Germany against the Soviet Union. Consequently Finnish relations with the western democracies were strained, although Britain and the United States had previously supported Finland against the Soviet Union. This thesis examines the differences in foreign policy and public opinion in Britain and the United States and the nature of their relations with Finland from 1939-1941

Ethnobotanical is the study of relationship between plants and people who used it while taxonomy is the study of classification and naming an organism. The purpose of this study is to determine the species of medicinal plants used by ethnic of Dusun Tagahas that live along the Kiulu River at Tuaran district, Sabah. Apart from that the medicinal plants taxonomical classification is also determined as well as the disease treated and the Index Cultural Significance (ICS). This study involved major standard ethnobotanical methods which are surveying study area, interview, collecting sample, compressing, drying, mounting, identification, classification and constructing dichotomous key. 62 species of medicinal plants were collected which most of the parts used for treatment was the root. The medicinal plants used to treat 28 types of ailments or illness: fever, high blood pressure, malaria, diarrhea, flatulence, stroke, wound, diabetes, cough, boils inside ear, flu, stomachache, ulcer, mouth thrush, lowering cholesterol level, cooling body, piles, pain from leech sting, blood circulation, anorexia, post-partum, burns, jaundice, bones pain, chicken pox, relieve pain during teething, toothache and eyesore. The plants are classified into one Kingdom, one phylum, two class, 11 sub-class, 28 order, 32 family, 54 genus and 62 species of medicinal plants. The results of ICS show that one plant has very high ICS score, 6 plants have high ICS score, 16 plants have medium ICS score, 10 plants have low ICS score and 29 plants have very low ICS score. This study has high potential to provide a documentation of medicinal plants that found in Sabah which give knowledge to society. Apart from that, the ICS score and distribution of each plant species is very important resource for developing management strategies for each plant
