A Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor projected on to the sky with reduced focal anisoplanatism
A method for producing a laser guide star wavefront sensor for adaptive optics with reduced focal anisoplanatism is presented. A theoretical analysis and numerical simulations have been carried out and the results are presented. The technique, named Sky-Projected Laser Array Shack–Hartmann (SPLASH), is shown to suffer considerably less from focal anisoplanatism than a conventional laser guide star system. The method is potentially suitable for large telescope apertures (8 m), and possibly for extremely large telescopes
Sheath-tailed bats (Chiroptera: Emballonuridae) from the early Pleistocene Rackham's Roost Site, Riversleigh World Heritage Area, and the distribution of northern Australian emballonurid species
Sheath-tailed bats (Family Emballonuridae) from the early Pleistocene Rackham’s Roost Site cave deposit in the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, north-western Queensland are the oldest recorded occurrence for the family in Australia. The fossil remains consist of maxillary and dentary fragments, as well as isolated teeth, but until now their precise identity has not been assessed. Our study indicates that at least three taxa are represented, and these are distinguished from other Australian emballonurids based on morphometric analysis of craniodental features. Most of the Rackham’s Roost Site emballonurid remains are referrable to the modern species Taphozous georgianus Thomas, 1915, but the extant species T. troughtoni Tate, 1952 also appears to be present, as well as a very large, as-yet undetermined species of Saccolaimus Temminck, 1838. We identify craniodental features that clearly distinguish T. georgianus from the externally very similar T. troughtoni. Results suggest that the distributions of T. georgianus and T. troughtoni may have overlapped in north-western Queensland since at least the early Pleistocene.Tyler R. King, Troy J. Myers, Kyle N. Chemical telemetry of OH observed to measure interstellar magnetic fields
We present models for the chemistry in gas moving towards the ionization
front of an HII region. When it is far from the ionization front, the gas is
highly depleted of elements more massive than helium. However, as it approaches
the ionization front, ices are destroyed and species formed on the grain
surfaces are injected into the gas phase. Photodissociation removes gas phase
molecular species as the gas flows towards the ionization front. We identify
models for which the OH column densities are comparable to those measured in
observations undertaken to study the magnetic fields in star forming regions
and give results for the column densities of other species that should be
abundant if the observed OH arises through a combination of the liberation of
H2O from surfaces and photodissociation. They include CH3OH, H2CO, and H2S.
Observations of these other species may help establish the nature of the OH
spatial distribution in the clouds, which is important for the interpretation

The VLBA Imaging and Polarimetry Survey at 5 GHz
We present the first results of the VLBA Imaging and Polarimetry Survey
(VIPS), a 5 GHz VLBI survey of 1,127 sources with flat radio spectra. Through
automated data reduction and imaging routines, we have produced publicly
available I, Q, and U images and have detected polarized flux density from 37%
of the sources. We have also developed an algorithm to use each source's I
image to automatically classify it as a point-like source, a core-jet, a
compact symmetric object (CSO) candidate, or a complex source. The mean ratio
of the polarized to total 5 GHz flux density for VIPS sources with detected
polarized flux density ranges from 1% to 20% with a median value of about 5%.
We have also found significant evidence that the directions of the jets in
core-jet systems tend to be perpendicular to the electric vector position
angles (EVPAs). The data is consistent with a scenario in which ~24% of the
polarized core-jets have EVPAs that are anti-aligned with the directions of
their jet components and which have a substantial amount of Faraday rotation.
In addition to these initial results, plans for future follow-up observations

Multi-matrix models and emergent geometry
Encouraged by the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study emergent local geometry in
large N multi-matrix models from the perspective of a strong coupling
expansion. By considering various solvable interacting models we show how the
emergence or non-emergence of local geometry at strong coupling is captured by
observables that effectively measure the mass of off-diagonal excitations about
a semiclassical eigenvalue background. We find emergent geometry at strong
coupling in models where a mass term regulates an infrared divergence. We also
show that our notion of emergent geometry can be usefully applied to fuzzy
spheres. Although most of our results are analytic, we have found numerical

On reaction thresholds in doubly special relativity
Two theories of special relativity with an additional invariant scale,
"doubly special relativity" (DSR), are tested with calculations of particle
process kinematics. Using the Judes-Visser modified conservation laws,
thresholds are studied in both theories. In contrast to some linear
approximations, which allow for particle processes forbidden in special
relativity, both the Amelino-Camelia and Maguejo-Smolin frameworks allow no
additional processes. To first order, the Amelino-Camelia framework thresholds
are lowered and the Maguejo-Smolin framework thresholds may be raised or

N=1* in 5 dimensions: Dijkgraaf-Vafa meets Polchinski-Strassler
One of the powerful techniques to analyze the 5 dimensional Super Yang Mills
theory with a massive hypermultiplet (N=1*) is provided by the AdS/CFT
correspondence. It predicts that, for certain special values of the
hypermultiplet mass, this theory develops nonperturbative branches of the
moduli space as well as new light degrees of freedom.
We use the higher dimensional generalization of the matrix model/gauge theory
correspondence and recover all the prediction of the supergravity analysis. We
construct the map between the four dimensional holomorphic superpotential and
the five dimensional action and explicitly show that the superpotential is flat
along the nonperturbative branches. This is the first instance in which the
Dijkgraaf-Vafa method is used to analyze intrinsically higher dimensional

Elevated circulating and placental SPINT2 is associated with placental dysfunction
Biomarkers for placental dysfunction are currently lacking. We recently identified SPINT1 as a novel biomarker; SPINT2 is a functionally related placental protease inhibitor. This study aimed to characterise SPINT2 expression in placental insufficiency. Circulating SPINT2 was assessed in three prospective cohorts, collected at the following: (1) term delivery (n = 227), (2) 36 weeks (n = 364), and (3) 24–34 weeks’ (n = 294) gestation. SPINT2 was also measured in the plasma and placentas of women with established placental disease at preterm (p = 0.028; median = 2233 pg/mL vs. controls, median = 1644 pg/mL), or delivered a small-for-gestational-age infant (p = 0.002; median = 2109 pg/mL vs. controls, median = 1614 pg/mL). SPINT2 was elevated in the placentas of patients who required delivery for preterm preeclampsia (p = 0.025). Though inflammatory cytokines had no effect, hypoxia increased SPINT2 in cytotrophoblast stem cells, and its expression was elevated in the placental labyrinth of growth-restricted rats.
