Process and information integration via hypermedia
Success stories for advanced automation prototypes abound in the literature but the deployments of practical large systems are few in number. There are several factors that militate against the maturation of such prototypes into products. Here, the integration of advanced automation software into large systems is discussed. Advanced automation systems tend to be specific applications that need to be integrated and aggregated into larger systems. Systems integration can be achieved by providing expert user-developers with verified tools to efficiently create small systems that interface to large systems through standard interfaces. The use of hypermedia as such a tool in the context of the ground control centers that support Shuttle and space station operations is explored. Hypermedia can be an integrating platform for data, conventional software, and advanced automation software, enabling data integration through the display of diverse types of information and through the creation of associative links between chunks of information. Further, hypermedia enables process integration through graphical invoking of system functions. Through analysis and examples, researchers illustrate how diverse information and processing paradigms can be integrated into a single software platform

Enhancing engagement in evidence-based tobacco cessation treatment for smokers with mental illness: A pilot randomized trial.
ObjectiveTo evaluate the efficacy of a brief telephone-delivered Motivational Interviewing (MI)-based intervention to facilitate engagement in evidence-based cessation treatment for Veterans with mental illness referred to smoking cessation treatment.Methods86 military Veteran smokers with mental illness were recruited from a tobacco cessation consult clinic and randomized to receive either a MI-based treatment engagement intervention (TE; n = 48) or a non-MI assessment and information control (CON; n = 38) condition. Intervention was delivered during a single brief telephone contact. Primary engagement outcomes were 1) attending a treatment session within 30 days and 2) combination treatment (attending session plus using pharmacotherapy). Cessation outcomes included self-reported 24 h cessation attempts and 7 day point abstinence at 3 months post-intervention. Outcomes were assessed at 1 and 3 months post intervention.ResultsOutcome analyses included 85 participants (47 TE, 38 CON) using an intent-to-treat analytic approach. Participants were on average 49.5 (13.4) years old, 88% Male, 59% white, 18% African American and 14% Hispanic/Latino(a). Following intervention delivery TE and CON participants did not differ on likelihood of attending a treatment session during the subsequent 30 days (47% vs 45%, respectively). A significant difference was observed when classified as utilizing combination treatment, 40% of TE versus 18% of CON reported use of smoking cessation medication and behavioral counseling (p = 0.04). No statistical differences were observed for cessation outcomes, although more TE than CON participants reported 7 day point abstinence at 3 months post-intervention (30% vs 18%).ConclusionsThe present pilot study provides initial evidence for the feasibility, acceptability and efficacy of a telephone delivered TE intervention for enhancing engagement in combinationevidence evidence-based treatment in a sample of Veteran smokers with mental illness referred to smoking cessation treatment. Smokers with mental illness typically have greater difficulty stopping smoking than those without mental illness. Increased engagement in combination treatment thus has the potential to increase quit rates and ultimately reduce the burden of tobacco use for this population
Calculation Method for Predicting AM0 Isc from High Altitude Aircraft Flight Data
High altitude aircraft have been used by by the space photovoltaic (PV) community to determine the Air Mass Zero (AM0) performance of solar cells for over fifty years. Relative to in-space measurement opportunities, these methods are generally cheaper and more readily available. The data obtained, however, must be corrected for residual atmospheric effects. This paper details the correction method currently being used for the calculation of the AM0 short-circuit current (Isc) for photovoltaic devices flown on the NASA ER-2 (Earth Resources-2) calibration platform. This method would also be applicable to any other high altitude method where Isc data is collected over a sufficiently large range of altitudes
Dendrimer-Encapsulated Nanoparticles: New Synthetic and Characterization Methods and Catalytic Applications
In this article we describe the synthesis, characterization, and applications of dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles (DENs). These materials are synthesized using a template approach in which metal ions are extracted into the interior of dendrimers and then subsequently reduced chemically to yield nearly size-monodisperse particles having diameters in the 1-2 nm range. Monometallic, bimetallic (alloy and core@shell), and semiconductor nanoparticles have been prepared by this route. The dendrimer component of these composites serves not only as a template for preparing the nanoparticle replica, but also as a stabilizer for the nanoparticle. In this perspective, we report on progress in the synthesis, characterization, and applications of these materials since our last review in 2005. The tunicamycins are a family of natural products represented generally by structure 1, wherein R indicates one of several long-chain branched, linear, saturated or unsaturated acyl substituents. They elicit a considerable range of biological responses including antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, and antitumor activities. Their ability to function as potent inhibitors of oligosaccharide synthesis in eukaryotic cells has established them as unique biochemical probes of the role of glycosylation on protein structure and function. InterPack2003-35057 HUMIDITY CONTROL SIMULATION FOR ELECTRONICS PACKAGING
ABSTRACT An important aspect of environmental control is the protection of equipment from the harmful effects of humidity. It is often desirable to desiccate a sealed volume in order that it satisfy a dryness requirement over the duration of its service life. Desiccant sizing, along with proper sealing, become important design elements in ensuring that such a requirement is achieved. To this end, Raytheon has developed a simulation tool to analyze and predict the humidity within sealed volumes. The pertinent physical principles that are modeled are permeation of water vapor by diffusion, pneumatic leakage, the hygroscopic properties of sealed materials, desiccant characteristics, and the kinetic model of ideal gas mixtures. The simulation has the capability of imposing any external environmental condition, consisting of diurnal cycles of temperature and humidity. The physical principles which underlie the simulation are described. An example of simulation results, design decisions and lessons-learned are presented
