    Stability enhancement of a hybrid micro-grid system in grid fault condition

    Low voltage ride through capability augmentation of a hybrid micro-grid system is presented in this paper which reflects enhanced reliability in the system. The control scheme involves parallel connected multiple ac-dc bidirectional converters. When the micro-grid system is subjected to a severe voltage dip by any transient fault single power converter may not be able to provide necessary reactive power to overcome the severe voltage dip. This paper discusses the control strategy of additional power converter connected in parallel with main converter to support extra reactive power to withstand the severe voltage dip. During transient fault, when the terminal voltage crosses 90% of its pre-fault value, additional converter comes into operation. With the help of additional power converter, the micro-grid system withstands the severe voltage fulfilling the grid code requirements. This multiple converter scheme provides the micro-grid system the capability of low voltage ride through which makes the system more reliable and stable.peer-reviewe

    Small signal stability analysis of doubly fed induction generator including SDBR

    This paper presents small signal stability analysis of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind farm including series dynamic braking resistor (SDBR) connected at the stator side. A detailed mathematical model of wind turbine, DFIG machine and converters and SDBR is presented in this paper to derive the complete dynamic equations of the studied system. Small signal stability of this system is carried out by modal and sensitivity analysis, participation factors and eigenvalue analysis. Finally, this paper presents an analysis of the dynamic behavior of DFIG based wind farm under voltage dip condition with and without SDBR.peer-reviewe

    Transient stability enhancement of a gridconnected wind farm using an adaptive neurofuzzy controlled-flywheel energy storage system

    With the rapid growth of the wind energy systems in the past years and their interconnection with the existing power system networks, it has become very significant to analyse and enhance the transient stability of the wind energy conversion systems connected to the grid. This study investigates the transient stability enhancement of a grid-connected wind farm using doubly-fed induction machine-based flywheel energy storage system. A cascaded adaptive neuro-fuzzy controller (ANFC) is introduced to control the insulated gate bipolar transistor switches-based frequency converter to enhance the transient stability of the grid-connected wind farm. The performance of the proposed control strategy is analysed under a severe symmetrical fault condition on both a single-machine infinite bus model and the IEEE-39 bus New England test system. The transient performance of the system is investigated by comparing the results of the system using the proposed ANFCs with that of the black-box optimisation technique-based proportional-integral controllers. The validity of the system is verified by the simulation results which are carried out using PSCAD/EMTDC environment

    A three-phase half-bridge cascaded inverter with reduced number of input DC supply

    © 2017 IEEE. Cascaded multilevel inverters (MLI) have recently received much attention due to its ability to perform well in various high voltage and high power applications with high efficiency. Cascaded inverters are able to generate high voltage output by utilizing a number of low voltage DC supplies and switches of low blocking voltage rating, which make cascaded MLI a cost effective choice for high voltage/power applications. The main drawback of cascaded MLI is the requirement of large number of isolated DC sources particularly, for three phase applications where the number of required input DC sources is three times that of single phase structure. In addition to the extra cost it will incur, the use of large number of DC supplies within the inverter will significantly increase its physical size, and complicate the management of such large number of DC sources. This paper presents a new topology for three phase MLI with a minimum number of input DC supplies. Symmetric and asymmetric input DC supply modes are developed for the proposed topology. Simulation and experimental results are provided to assess the performance of the proposed MLI topology

    Dual Mechanical Port Machine Based Hybrid Electric Vehicle Using Reduced Switch Converters

    Due to the increased environmental pollution, hybrid vehicles have attracted enormous attention in today's society. The two most important factors in designing these vehicles are size and weight. For this purpose, some researchers have presented the use of the dual-mechanical-port machine (DMPM) in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). This paper presents two modified converter topologies with a reduced number of switching devices for use on DMPM-based HEVs, with the goal of reducing the overall size and weight of the system. Beside the design of the DMPM in the series-parallel HEV structure along with the energy management unit, the conventional back-to-back (BB) converter is replaced with nine-switch (NS) and five-leg (FL) converters. These converters have never been examined for the DMPM-based HEV, and therefore, the objective of this paper is to reveal the operational characteristics and power flow mechanism of this machine using the NS and FL converters. The simulation analysis is carried out using MATLAB/Simulink considering all HEV operational modes. In addition, two proposed and the conventional converters are compared in terms of losses, maximum achievable voltages, required dc-link voltages, the rating of the components, and torque ripple, and finally, a recommendation is made based on the obtained results

    Energy consumption is increasing rapidly; hence, the energy demand cannot be fulfilled using traditional power resources only. Power systems based on renewable energy, including solar and wind, are effective and friendly for the environment. Islanded hybrid microgrid systems (IHMS) are relatively new in this industry and combine two or more sustainable sources, such as wind turbines, solar photovoltaic (PV), and other renewable alternatives, ocean, wave, and geothermal energy, etc. While sustainable, long-lasting power sources are the best choice to satisfy the growing energy demands, they are still not yet ready to be used on a large scale due to their stochastic characteristics. Furthermore, integrating these sources into the existing energy system can cause high technical difficulties, due to the stochastic nature of solar and wind in the conventional grid system and common stand-alone framework. A review of research and applications of the effective hybridization of renewable energy sources is therefore essential to address those technical and economic issues and ensure system stability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. This article discusses the challenges that might arise when a PV plant and a wind power station are combined to produce power for the conventional main grid or in a stand-alone system. In addition, this analysis provides light on optimization approaches for improving power quality and cost-effectiveness in a solar and wind integrated IHMS. Voltage fluctuation, frequency deviation, and the uncertain nature of solar irradiation and wind sources are significant challenges for both grid-connected and standalone hybrid systems. This study then provides an overview of the control strategies which might help enhance the integration of the IHMS in producing electricity for distribution to the grid-connected load and the islanded load. In this study, the possible issues that can hinder the smooth integration of these renewable sources have been discussed. Finally, this study discusses the recent platforms being used in IHMS as well as the potential of dispatch strategies on solar and wind-integrated IHMS
