AbstractOnline advertisement has generated 48.09 billion dollars in 2013 (IAB, 2014) in US sponsoring most of the free services and content on the Internet today. However, problems stemming from the rivalry to get a share of this high revenue can disrupt the system jeopardizing online privacy and security. There have been a lot of malicious cases where fraudsters have deployed methods such as malware or phishing to get a share from the market thus compromising the security of end users and thus harming the end users. In addition to this, tracking methods deployed to increase the targeting accuracy of the advertisements reveals a lot of private information about the users without any permission from them. The rules around collection and usage of personal data is ambiguous and can be harmful in various ways such when it is shared with third parties. In response to these threats, end users have been inclining to use ad-avoidance tools which disable user tracking or block ad requests completely. This situation harms the Internet ecosystem which heavily relies on online advertising. To remedy this problem, Comodo is developing secure and privacy-friendly advertising solutions around its “trusted ads” concept using methods such as anonymous user tracking, safe ad content delivery and continuous ad inspection (malware/virus scanning). These methods guarantee secure advertisements delivery to end users, while preserving effectiveness of ad delivery. The beta versions of the products have been deployed and tested in real life for 6 months. Based on our observations, users are concerned about their privacy; but they also want customized content according to their needs and make money from ads as long as it is not harmful to them. Based on this data, we are willing to expand our system and make it one of the major ad-delivery networks

Background SBTx has become a feasible therapeutic option for patients with irreversible intestinal failure. Increase in the number and in the improvement of the patient and graft survival in SBTx has a slow course when compared to other solid organ transplantation. Aim The aim of this study is to analyze 25 isolated SBTx performed since 2003 at a single center. It also aims to compare the patient and graft survivals rate during the early (before 2010) and late (after 2010) period. Materials and Methods Medical charts of 24 patients were analyzed retrospectively. To compare the center’s experience during a twelve year period, the results were divided into two groups (before (n:7) and after 2010 (n:18)). At the appropriate time, data were reported as mean± standard deviation, median, and range. Kaplan Meier method was used for the survival analysis of the graft and the patients. Results Median age of the patients was 39 (min 6 months, max: 56 yr). Six of them were in the pediatric age group. Compared to before 2010, graft survival rates increased from 28.1% to 53.8% in 3 months, from 28.6% to 35.9% in 6 months, and from 14.3% to 29.9% in one year after 2010. At the same period, patient survival rate increased from 57.1% to 72.2% in 3 months, from 28.6% to 38.9% in 6 months, and from 14.3% to 33.3% in one year. In the pediatric age group, patient and graft survival rates were 85.7% in 3 months, 71.4% in 6 months, and 71.4 % in 1 year. Conclusion SBTx is an effective treatment choice for selected patients with intestinal failure. Although patient and graft survival rates were improved after 2010 in our center, it was inferior. Patient and graft survival rates in pediatric SBTx are favourable and promising

In this study, college students were aimed to evaluate the characteristics of the usage of herbal products. The study included 543 students from different faculties of Sutcu Imam University in Kahramanmaras. Questions that integrate a standard questionnaire about demographic characteristics of the participants, knowledge/attitudes and behaviors about the use of herbal products were applied. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 20.0 statistical program. 278 students were enrolled in the study. 51.2% were female and mean age was 22.7±3.4 SD (18-37). 218 of all participants (40.1%) has an initial choice of going to a doctor when they get sick. 209 of the participants (38.5%) primarily applied herbal medicines and traditional methods as the first choice. 149 students (27.4%) bought the herbal medicine from a previously known place. 283 participants (52.1%) believed that these drugs are safe. 300 of the participants (55.2%) declared that they used herbal medicine due to suggestion of the doctors, 115 students (21.2%) had seen these drugs in TV advertisements, 93 students (17.1%) had read about or informed by internet on herbal medicines. 317 students (58.4%) have used these drugs for cold, 253 (46.6%) for protection against disease and 159 (29.3%) for skin problems. 321 of the participants (67.6%) declared that they somehow benefitted from the drug and 146 (30.7%) described no benefit or harm. This study has shown that the use of herbal medicine is common among university students. The control of the unlimited usage of the herbal medicine both in our country and throughout the world is very important. Usage of herbal products and effects on the health need further scientific studies. [Med-Science 2014; 3(3.000): 1352-60

Atmospheric trace elements in Ankara Turkey 1 factors affecting chemical composition of fine particles

Fine and coarse aerosol samples were collected between February and June 1993, in Ankara, Turkey using a stack filter unit (SFU). Collected samples were analyzed for approximately 40 trace elements and major ions using a combination of instrumental neutron activation analysis, atomic absorption spectromerty and ion chromatography. Particle sizing characteristics of the SFU was tested against dichotomous sampler and the sampler was found to be a good alternative for more expensive particle sizing devices. Fossil fuel combustion was found to be the main source of anthropogenic elements in aerosols, including the ones with well-known industrial sources. Atmospheric loading and seasonal variations in the concentrations of crustal elements are determined by the variations in wind speed and moisture of the soil. Short-term episodes in the concentrations of all elements are governed by local meteorology, particularly by the wind speed and mixing height. Concentrations of elements with anthropogenic origin have fairly similar concentrations in all wind sectors as they are distributed uniformly over the city and its suburbs due to low annual average wind speed. However, these elements showed directional preferences in samples which correspond to wind speeds higher than 2.5 m s(-1). Change in the concentrations of anthropogenic elements in Ankara atmosphere is consistent with the history of regulatory actions taken to reduce air pollution. Moreover, an unexpected decrease in the concentrations of crustal elements between 1975 and 1993 is related to reduction in exposed earth surface due to rapid urban developments. WOS: 000332944300015The aim of this study was to introduce antimicrobial activity to stainless steel orthodontic arch wires by coating them with TiO2 in anatase form. Stainless steel (0.016 x 0.022 inch), D-rect (0.016 x 0.022 inch), and multistranded hammered retainer wires (0.014 x 0.018 inch) were coated with TiO2 anatase by the sol-gel dip coating method. The wires were assessed for their photocatalytic antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans, Candida albicans, and Enterococcus faecalis. After illumination under UVA (315400 nm) at 1.0 mW/cm(2) for 1 h, the reduction efficiencies of the anatase-coated arch wires were calculated by using colony-forming unit counts. All anatase-coated arch wires showed remarkable inhibitor effects against the test microorganisms under UVA. The most efficient wire on S. mutans was the stainless steel wire, with a 99.99% reduction in growth, but multistranded hammered retainer wire was the most active against both C. albicans and E. faecalis, with 98.0% and 91.68% reduction rates, respectively. TiO2-coated arch wires exposed to UVA illumination showed significant antimicrobial activity when compared with uncoated samples and coated, but not UVA-exposed, samples. Our results suggest that the antimicrobial effect of TiO2-coated arch wires in long-lasting orthodontic treatments would be beneficial for the prophylaxis of caries

Endometriosis of the Terminal Ileum: A Diagnostic Dilemma

    Get PDF
Endometriosis is characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue consisting of glands and/or stroma located outside the uterus. Involvement of the terminal ileum is extremely rare. Preoperative distinction of ileal endometriosis from other diseases of the ileocecal region is difficult in terms of clinical presentation, symptomatology, radiological appearance, and surgical and pathological findings. We report a case initially diagnosed as Crohn's disease due to a longstanding diarrhea with subsequent intestinal obstruction, but finally diagnosed as ileal endometriosis by histopathological evaluation after resection of the involved segment

Purpose: Surgery is the definitive treatment for early colon cancers. Adjuvant therapies are used with the aim of eradicating micrometastases and improving cure rates. Recent studies have proposed that adiponectin might be responsible for obesity-related malignancies. We investigated the prognostic value of this cytokine. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent surgical removal of stage II or III (TNM staging) primary tumors and were followed for at least three years were included in the study given adequate specimen for immunohistochemical evaluation. Based on these criteria, 53 patients were included. Results: Mean age was 58.3 ± 10.1 years (35-78 years). The mean follow-up time was 41 months (10-96 months). Immunohistochemical evaluation identified 21 patients (39.6%) with cytoplasmic adiponectin present in their specimens. The rates of recurrence were 42.9% (9/21) and 34.4% (11/32) in patients with and without adiponectin expression, respectively. In cases with adiponectin expression, mean disease - free survival was 60.3 ± 9.03 months, and in cases without adiponectin expression, mean disease - free survival was 68.7 ± 6.67 months (P = 0.414). Mean overall survival of patients with adiponectin expression was 65 months compared to 67 months for patients without (P = 0.786). Conclusion: Adiponectin, which is secreted by adipose tissue, may have a role in the development and progression of cancer via its pro-apoptotic and/or anti-proliferative effects. Adiponectin expression in tumor tissues is likely to have a negative effect on disease - free survival in patients with stage II/III colon cancer; however, no statistically significant effect was demonstrated
