    Clinical and laboratory evaluation of Turkish children with IgG subclass deficiency

    MakaleWOS:000922080700001PubMed ID: 36089538Background: IgG subclass deficiency is a laboratory diagnosis and becomes important with recurrent infections. This study aimed to examine the demographic, clinical, and laboratory results of pediatric cases with IgG subclass deficiency and to improve the understanding of the clinical significance of IgG subclass deficiency. Methods: In this study, the clinical and laboratory features of 111 pediatric patients, with at least one whose serum IgG subclasses was measured as lower than 2 standard deviation of healthy aged-matched control values, were evaluated. The clinical and laboratory features of the cases with isolated IgG subclass deficiency (Group 1) and those with low serum levels of any of IgG, IgA, and IgM in addition to the IgG subclass deficiency (Group 2) were compared. Results: A total of 55 (49.54%) and 56 (50.45 %) patients were included in Groups 1 and 2, respectively. Among our studied cases, 20 (18. 1%) had a history of hospitalization in the neonatal period, 61 (54.95 %) had at least one hospitalization due to infection, and 55 (49.54%) had a history of recurrent infection. The frequencies of these three conditions were statistically significantly higher in Group 2 (p < 0.05). The frequencies of infections in the last year in Groups 1 and 2 were 4.4 +/- 1.2 and 5.4 +/- 1.9, respectively (p < 0.05). As a result of recurrent infections, 43.24% (n = 48) of our patients received antibiotic prophylaxis, and 21.62% (n = 24) had immunoglobulin replacement therapy. Furthermore, the numbers of pa-tients who needed these treatments were higher in Group 2 (p < 0.05).Conclusion: In cases with IgG subclass deficiencies, concomitant main-group immunoglobulin deficiencies may increase the number and severity of infections, leading to hospitalizations, antibiotic prophylaxis, and immunoglobulin therapy. More attention should be paid to cases of immunoglobulin main-group deficiencies in the follow-up of these cases.Copyright (c) 2022, Taiwan Pediatric Association. Published by Elsevier Taiwan LLC.     A new solution-based matrix material for temperature sensors

    This study presents a new environmentally friendly matrix material for temperature sensor applications. Sodium silicate solution and graphite were used as matrix and conductive materials, respectively. The chemical, morphological, and electrical properties of the raw materials and composites were investigated using X-ray diffractometer, Scanning Electron Microscope, Raman spectroscopy, Hall effect device, and digital multimeters. The effect of graphite content on the performance of sensors was investigated. All samples showed negative temperature coefficient (NTC) behaviour. The performance of sensors was investigated between 25 degrees C and 100 degrees C. The prepared sensors exhibited a linearity of 0.96, and a sensitivity of - 0.0479%/C-1. The sensors showed response and recovery time of 30 and 48 s, respectively. In addition, the sensors showed long-term stability, and repeatability with a very low percolation threshold (7.5 wt%). Finally, to demonstrate the functionality of sensors in practical applications, the paint-like composite solution was applied to a beaker surface and paper tape to monitor the performance of the sensor in real-time

    AMAÇ: Daha önce tanımlanmış, fakat az kullanılan “ekstended” veya vertical rektus abdominis muskulokutan (“Ekstended” RAM, VRAM) fleplerinin çok nadir endikasyonlardaki kullanımları incelendi. GEREÇ VE YÖNTEM: Beş hastada, 28x8 ile 35x10 cm ebatlarında cilt adası içeren flepler kullanıldı. Dört flep uyluk ve diz proksimal bölgedeki defekt onarımları için inguinal ligamentin altından, bir flep lomber gölgedeki defekt onarımı için transabdominal olarak defekt alanlara taşındı. BULGULAR: Hiçbir olguda flep kaybı görülmedi. Bir olguda yara yeri enfeksiyonu gelişti ve cerrahi ile tedavi edildi. Uyluk ve lomber bölge defektleri onarımlarında düşük komplikasyon oranlarıyla “ekstended” RAM ve VRAM fleple başarılı transfer gerçekleştirildi ve çok güvenli ve uygun bir seçenek olduğu sunuldu. SONUÇ: Avantajları bol miktarda ve iyi kanlanan doku taşımasını sağlar, flep kolay ve hızlı hazırlanır ve mikrocerrahi deneyimi gerektirmez.BACKGROUND: A series of previously described but rarely used variations of the pedicled, extended or vertical rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flap ( Extended RAM, VRAM) were reviewed. METHODS: Skin paddle dimensions, ranged 8 to 28 cm in width and 10 to 35 cm in length, were used in five consecutive patients. Four flaps were placed deep to the inguinal ligament to repair the thigh as proximal to the knee region; the remaining one flap was passed transabdominally to cover the defect of the lumbar region. RESULTS: No flaps necrosis were seen and in one case wound healing problems required minimal operative intervention. Successful transfer of the VRAM and extended RAM with low rate of complication for the thigh and lumbar region defects were demonstrated to be safe and reasonable options of flap reconstruction. DISCUSSION: The flaps had the advantages of being robust and well- vascularized, easy and fast to harvest, and not requiring microsurgery experience

    Burdur Gölü, Türkiye'nin en derin göllerinden biri olup, yapı olarak tektonik ve oligotrofik karakterdedir. Suyundaki yüksek sodyum, sülfat ve klorür içerigi nedeniyle bitki türü çesitliligi azdır ve sadece birkaç balık türü yasamaktadır. Göl seviyesi her yıl yagıslı mevsimlerde yükselmekte, yaz aylarında ise buharlasma nedeniyle düsmektedir. Göl, yagmur suları, yeraltından sızmalar ve bir kısmı mevsimsel akan akarsularla ile beslenmektedir. Tarihi kayıtlara göre göl seviyesi jeolojik zamanlarda yükselme ve düsme göstermistir. Gölde hidrojeolojik ve meteorolojik etkilere baglı olarak dönemsel yükselmeler de meydana gelmektedir. Bu yükselme dönemlerinden biri 1971 depremi öncesi tespit edilmistir. Bu tarihten günümüze kadar DSİ 18. Bölge Müdürlügü Burdur Gölü su seviyesinde önemli ölçüde bir azalma belirlemistir. Bu seviye azalması meteorolojik olaylar ve göl çevresinde insa edilen barajların göle giren suyu önemli derecede azaltmasıdır. Bu durum göl suyunun sahip oldugu genel kimyasal yapıda fazla bir etkiye sahip olmamakla beraber göl suyunda bazı agır metallerin son 20 yıllık verilere göre artıs göstermesi seklinde olumsuz bir etki meydana getirmistir. Gölün dısarıya çıkısının olmaması, özellikle nikel, krom ve çinko gibi agır metallerin göl seviyesi düsüsü ile hızlı bir sekilde arttıgı gözlenmistir. Bu çalısma kapsamında incelenen iki yıllık dönem içerisinde gölün kıyı kesimlerinde sahip oldugu fiziksel ve kimyasal su kalitesinin yeraltı suyu beslemesi ve meteorolojik faktörden etkilendigi ve agır metallerin önemli bir degisiklik göstermedigi tespit edilmistir

    Early and late term microsurgical free flap reconstruction and risks in high voltage electrical injury

    The aim of the study is to discuss and compare the early and late micro vascular flap reconstruction's outcomes, importance, risks, advantages and disadvantages with review of our 13 high voltage electrical burn injury cases. Medical records have been reviewed for electrical burns in last three years. 13 cases fitting the criterion were included into the study. Four of them have been hospitalized for late complication such as severe contracture; nine of them have been hospitalized for acute treatment. Five patients had latissimus dorsi muscle flap, three patients had parascapular flap, two patients had latissimus dorsi and scapula osteomusculocutaneous flap, two patients had rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flap, and one patient had parascapular and scapular flap. Early reconstruction applied group showed a significant difference regarding to flap failure rates. Electrical injuries are more complex than regular burn injuries related with heat, and the reconstruction of these cases also should be special. One of the most important factor for free flap viability in electrical injury cases is surgery timing. All of the complications were seen in the patients who had surgery at 12th and 19th days after the electrical injury. No complication has seen in the group of patients who had surgery on late term period. However microsurgical reconstruction should be considered to cover exposed bony tissues on the extremities in the short term period in order to prevent possible limb shortening procedures

    Excessive amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS), unless counterbalanced by antioxidants, can cause cellular damage under oxidative stress conditions; therefore, antioxidative defenses against ROS must be measured. With the development of nanotechnology, nanoparticles have found numerous applications in science, health, and industries. Magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4:MN Ps) have attracted attention because of their peroxidase-like activity. In this study, hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) generated by MNPs-catalyzed degradation of H2O2 converted the N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DMPD) probe into its colored DMPD center dot+. radical cation, which gave an absorbance maximum at lambda = 553 nm. In the presence of antioxidants, center dot OH was partly scavenged by antioxidants and produced less DMPD center dot+, causing a decrease in the 553 nm-absorbance. Antioxidant concentrations were calculated with the aid of absorbance differences between the reference and sample solutions. The linear working ranges and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity coefficients of different classes of antioxidants were determined by applying the developed method. In addition, binary and ternary mixtures of antioxidants were tested to observe the additivity of absorbances of mixture constituents. The method was applied to real samples such as orange juice and green tea. Student t-test, F tests, and the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient were used for statistical comparisons
