    Timing and correction of stepping movements with a virtual reality avatar

    Research into the ability to coordinate one’s movements with external cues has focussed on the use of simple rhythmic, auditory and visual stimuli, or interpersonal coordination with another person. Coordinating movements with a virtual avatar has not been explored, in the context of responses to temporal cues. To determine whether cueing of movements using a virtual avatar is effective, people’s ability to accurately coordinate with the stimuli needs to be investigated. Here we focus on temporal cues, as we know from timing studies that visual cues can be difficult to follow in the timing context. Real stepping movements were mapped onto an avatar using motion capture data. Healthy participants were then motion captured whilst stepping in time with the avatar’s movements, as viewed through a virtual reality headset. The timing of one of the avatar step cycles was accelerated or decelerated by 15% to create a temporal perturbation, for which participants would need to correct to, in order to remain in time. Step onset times of participants relative to the corresponding step-onsets of the avatar were used to measure the timing errors (asynchronies) between them. Participants completed either a visual-only condition, or auditory-visual with footstep sounds included, at two stepping tempo conditions (Fast: 400ms interval, Slow: 800ms interval). Participants’ asynchronies exhibited slow drift in the Visual-Only condition, but became stable in the Auditory-Visual condition. Moreover, we observed a clear corrective response to the phase perturbation in both the fast and slow tempo auditory-visual conditions. We conclude that an avatar’s movements can be used to influence a person’s own motion, but should include relevant auditory cues congruent with the movement to ensure a suitable level of entrainment is achieved. This approach has applications in physiotherapy, where virtual avatars present an opportunity to provide the guidance to assist patients in adhering to prescribed exercises

    Analysis of Channel and Structure of Cattle Marketing Intermediaries in Mubi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria

    This study determined the Marketing Channel and Structure of Cattle among Intermediaries in Mubi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria. Objectives of this study area to examine the marketing channel for cattle; determine the marketing structure of the intermediaries and identifying the major constraints in cattle marketing in the study area. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select 123 respondents in Mubi International Cattle Market. Primary data were collected through the use of structured questionnaire from the market. Descriptive statistics and Gini-coefficient were used in analyse the data of this study. The result shows that 87% sell live cattle, 13% sell butcher pieces, while 61.8% and 27.6% sell their cattle in secondary and terminal markets respectively. About 73% had their major source of trading cattle in north-east and 26% are from other countries (Cameroon, Chad and Niger). Gini- coefficients of 0.5673, 0.6340, 0.452 and 0.5719 were obtained for wholesalers, retailers, butchers and brokers respectively, while Respondents indicates that insurgency (insecurity) (78%), inadequate market information (74%), inadequate credit facility (73.2%), cost of transportation (72.4%), double charges by market officials been the least (48.8%) were some of the major constraints. The study recommended that good roads, better and cheap means of transportation should be provided to the marketers through their cooperatives

    Adsorption of Congo Red Dye from Aqueous Solution using ZnO and Al2O3/ZnO Composite: Isotherm, Kinetic and Thermodynamic Data

    Herein, an adsorption study of congo red (CR) dye onto ZnO and Al2O3/ZnO  is reported. ZnO was prepared using conventional chemicals by co-precipitation method and Al2O3 used in the composite was prepared through recycling of aluminium waste. Information about the materials was obtained through spectroscopic techniques. A batch adsorption method was used to obtain the adsorption data from which isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were obtained. The result of the adsorbents characterisation revealed the expected properties of the prepared materials. The adsorption capacities at 250 mg/L of CR dye were 24.33 mg/g and 24.57 mg/g for ZnO and Al2O3/ZnO respectively. The isotherm study of the adsorption process revealed that Langmuir model fitted best the adsorption data with monolayer adsorption capacities (qm) of 27.67 mg/g and 33.39 mg/g for ZnO and Al2O3/ZnO respectively. The adsorption was rapid within the first 15 min and the equilibrium was reached at 45 min. The kinetic study followed a pseudo-second-order model with the rate constant of 0.049 and 0.093 g.mg-1.min-1 for ZnO and Al2O3/ZnO  respectively. Experimentally, the process was endothermic and was supported by the positive values of enthalpy (ΔH) with positive values of entropy (ΔS). The change in free energy (ΔG) is negative at all temperatures studied, indicating spontaneity but more spontaneous for Al2O3/ZnO than ZnO. The adsorption of CR dye from an aqueous solution onto ZnO as an adsorbent can be slightly improved upon by the introduction of Al2O3 to form Al2O3/ZnO composite

    Nutritional Analysis and Antibacterial Effect of Honey on Bacterial Wound Pathogens

    Abstract: The nutritional analysis of honey sample purchased from Iyale, Dekina Local Government area in Kogi state, Nigeria was assessed using the recommended methods of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists. The results were as follow: total titratable acidity (32.6%), fat content (1.5%), protein content (0.88%), unhydrolysed and hydrolysed honey have glucose and fructose (63.0%) and (81%), vitamin C content (3.45%), moisture content (25.22%), ash content (1.67%), crude fibre (1.2%), soluble carbohydrate (69.53%). The antibacterial analysis of honey at 100% concentration revealed a significant activity against Escherichia coli, (25mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (23mm), Streptococcus pyogenes (22mm), Staphylococcus aureus (20mm), and Proteus mirabilis (17mm). At 75% concentration the bactericidal activity was slightly reduced but effective against Escherichia coli, (21mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (16mm), Streptococcus pyogenes (17mm), Staphylococcus aureus (14mm), and Proteus mirabilis (13mm). While at 50% concentration there was weak inhibition Escherichia coli, (11mm), Streptococcus pyogenes (9mm), Staphylococcus aureus (9mm), however some of the wound bacterial pathogens were resistance at these concentration such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus mirabilis. The minimum bactericidal concentration and the minimum inhibitory concentration were 3.13mg/ml -12.5mg/ml and 1.57mg/ml -6.25mg/ml respectively. The result reveals that honey can be used in the treatment of wound infection associated with these pathogens

    Serospatial epidemiology of zoonotic Coxiella burnetii in a cross section of cattle and small ruminants in northern Nigeria

    The persistent and highly transmissible Coxiella burnetii is a neglected infection that negatively affects reproductive parameters of livestock. It is also of zoonotic importance and has been reported to cause devastating human infections globally. Domestic ruminants represent the most frequent source of human infection. Data from Nigeria are very few and outdated. There is a significant gap in up-to-date information on the exposure, spatial distribution and risk factors of infection of this important disease. The exposure to C. burnetii was determined using sensitive serological assays in cattle and small ruminants. A total of 538 animals made up of 268 cattle and 270 small ruminants were sampled from three northern Nigerian states. The proportion of cattle sampled that were seropositive from the study locations were: Kwara 14/90 (15.6%; 95% CI: 8.8–24.7); Plateau 10/106 (9.43%; 95% CI: 4.6–16.7) and Borno 4/72 (5.56%; 95% CI: 1.5–13.6) states. Lower seroprevalence was recorded among the small ruminants sampled, with positives recorded from sheep and goat sampled from only Kwara state 6/184 (3.3%; 95% CI: 1.2–7.0); while none of the small ruminants sampled from Plateau were seropositive. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that none of the tested independent variables (village, age group, sex, breed of cattle, presence of ticks, reproductive status, and management system) were statistically significant factors associated with seropositivity of cattle for antibodies to C. burnetii. Stakeholders involved in animal husbandry should be duly educated on proper disposal of birth products as well as bodily fluids in order to reduce environmental contamination, persistence and human infection

    Review of Person Re-identification Techniques

    Person re-identification across different surveillance cameras with disjoint fields of view has become one of the most interesting and challenging subjects in the area of intelligent video surveillance. Although several methods have been developed and proposed, certain limitations and unresolved issues remain. In all of the existing re-identification approaches, feature vectors are extracted from segmented still images or video frames. Different similarity or dissimilarity measures have been applied to these vectors. Some methods have used simple constant metrics, whereas others have utilised models to obtain optimised metrics. Some have created models based on local colour or texture information, and others have built models based on the gait of people. In general, the main objective of all these approaches is to achieve a higher-accuracy rate and lowercomputational costs. This study summarises several developments in recent literature and discusses the various available methods used in person re-identification.     Primary umbilical endometriosis: Radical excision (omphalectomy) and laparoscopic management of associated pelvic endometriosis in a low resource tertiary hospital

    Primary umbilical endometriosis (PUE) is a rare condition affecting 0.5 – 1% of all extragenital endometriosis cases. We reviewed the data of five women with umbilical endometriosis retrospectively. The age range was 29 – 46 years, and they were all nulligravid at presentation. Common clinical presentation was umbilical pain and masses, dysmenorrhea, and primary infertility. Radical umbilical excision was performed to remove the nodule as a definitive treatment. Diagnostic laparoscopy was performed, followed by varying degrees of operative laparoscopic procedures. They all had endometriosis in the pelvis. Three out of five women operated became pregnant and had live births. Complete resolution of clinical symptoms with a reduction in umbilical and menstrual pain scores occurred. In resource-constrained settings, diagnosis, and treatment of PUE may be challenging. Clinical suspicion and appropriate case management are critical for good reproductive outcomes and quality of life.   L'endomĂ©triose ombilicale primaire (PUE) est une maladie rare affectant 0,5 Ă  1 % de tous les cas d'endomĂ©triose extragĂ©nitale.     Near real time ionospheric monitoring system over Malaysia using GPS data: my-iono service

    Recently, real time information on the local ionospheric condition is becoming an important need for space and ground based technological systems which are prone to be affected by the local ionospheric state. Knowledge on the impact from the sun activity to the equatorial and low latitude ionosphere is crucial for research and development purpose in all developing nations which are relying on space-based technology systems such as the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). As the first action step to achieve deeper understanding and hands on experience on real time ionospheric monitoring, the National Space Agency of Malaysia (ANGKASA) in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has developed the first near real time ionospheric and space weather monitoring system for Malaysia (My-Iono) in year 2015. This web-based platform operates based on the National R&D GPS Continuously operating reference station network (NRC-net). The system runs based on a locally derived algorithm called Equatorial Ionosphere Index (EIX). The EIX was formulated based on 10 years (2004 to 2013) GPS derived empirical Total Electron Content (TEC) data obtained frpm 78 My-RTKnet stations around Malaysia. The fundamental of My-Iono Service consists of vertical TEC maps with a latency of ∌ 2 mins over Malaysia and information on the current ionospheric status; Normal, Medium and Severe, time series of Mean VTEC for station specific, time series of RAte of Change of tEc (RACE) for station specific and time series of Ionospheric Zenith (Iz) Delay for station specific estimated in near real time using GPS observations.
