Before the advent of the Internet, the newspapers were the prominent instrument of mobilization for independence and political struggles. Since independence in Nigeria, the political class has adopted newspapers as a medium of Political Competition and Communication. Consequently, most political information exists in unstructured form and hence the need to tap into it using text mining algorithm. This paper implements a text mining algorithm on some unstructured data format in some newspapers. The algorithm involves the following natural language processing techniques: tokenization, text filtering and refinement. As a follow-up to the natural language techniques, association rule mining technique of data mining is used to extract knowledge using the Modified Generating Association Rules based on Weighting scheme (GARW). The main contributions of the technique are that it integrates information retrieval scheme (Term Frequency Inverse Document Frequency) (for keyword/feature selection that automatically selects the most discriminative keywords for use in association rules generation) with Data Mining technique for association rules discovery. The program is applied to Pre-Election information gotten from the website of the Nigerian Guardian newspaper. The extracted association rules contained important features and described the informative news included in the documents collection when related to the concluded 2007 presidential election. The system presented useful information that could help sanitize the polity as well as protect the nascent democracy

This study determined the Marketing Channel and Structure of Cattle among Intermediaries in Mubi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria. Objectives of this study area to examine the marketing channel for cattle; determine the marketing structure of the intermediaries and identifying the major constraints in cattle marketing in the study area. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select 123 respondents in Mubi International Cattle Market. Primary data were collected through the use of structured questionnaire from the market. Descriptive statistics and Gini-coefficient were used in analyse the data of this study. The result shows that 87% sell live cattle, 13% sell butcher pieces, while 61.8% and 27.6% sell their cattle in secondary and terminal markets respectively. About 73% had their major source of trading cattle in north-east and 26% are from other countries (Cameroon, Chad and Niger). Gini- coefficients of 0.5673, 0.6340, 0.452 and 0.5719 were obtained for wholesalers, retailers, butchers and brokers respectively, while Respondents indicates that insurgency (insecurity) (78%), inadequate market information (74%), inadequate credit facility (73.2%), cost of transportation (72.4%), double charges by market officials been the least (48.8%) were some of the major constraints. The study recommended that good roads, better and cheap means of transportation should be provided to the marketers through their cooperatives

In loan provision, the central worry is whether the borrower will default or payback. A good number of institutions world-wide have gone into distress owing to bad debt arising from inability to recover borrowed funds. Credit Rating is a technique that is widely used to evaluate applications tendered for credit, identify prospective borrowers, and manage existing credit accounts. This work is aimed at the development of a system capable of evaluating the credit worthiness of fund-seeking bank customers and other borrowers towards repayment capabilities of loan facility availed to them in due time. The method carefully examines who qualifies for a loan based on certain rules consisting of Payment History, Credit Owed, Credit Available, Age of Account, Crime Records, Medical Records, Amount to be borrowed. and other factors. Percentage weights for assessment of each of these factors were proposed including threshold percentage above which credit is predicted adequate to be given. This factor creates a sort of satisfaction and level-playing field for correct assessment of lending risk

Magneto-transport study of intra- and intergrain transitions in the magnetic superconductors RuSr2GdCu2O8 and RuSr2(Gd1.5Ce0.5)Cu2O10

A characterization of the magnetic superconductors RuSr2GdCu2O8 [Ru-(1212)] and RuSr2(Gd1.5Ce0.5)Cu2O10 [Ru-(1222)] through resistance measurements as a function of temperature and magnetic field is presented. Two peaks in the derivative of the resistive curves are identified as intra- and intergrain superconducting transitions. Strong intragrain granularity effects are observed, and explained by considering the antiphase boundaries between structural domains of coherently rotated RuO6 octahedra as intragrain Josephson-junctions. A different field dependence of the intragrain transition temperature in these compounds was found. For Ru-(1212) it remains unchanged up to 0.1 T, decreasing for higher fields. In Ru-(1222) it smoothly diminishes with the increase in field even for a value as low as 100 Oe. These results are interpreted as a consequence of a spin-flop transition of the Ru moments. The large separation between the RuO2 layers in Ru-(1222) promotes a weak interlayer coupling, leading the magnetic transition to occur at lower fields. The suppression rate of the intragrain transition temperature is about five times higher for Ru-(1222), a result we relate to an enhancement of the 2D character of the vortex structure. A distinctive difference with conventional cuprates is the sharp increase in amplitude of the intergrain peak in both systems, as the field is raised, which is ascribed to percolation through a fraction of high quality intergrain junctions.Comment: Submitted for Physical Review

Introduction: Childhood depression is a debilitating psychiatric illness and has frequently been under-diagnosed. It is crucial to identify the condition early, as undetected cases may lead to detrimental psychosocial consequences in adulthood. Objective: The prevalence of depression among school children in Selangor and to compare it between urban and rural schools. Also to identify factors associated with depression in secondary school children. Method: 2 urban and 3 rural secondary schools were selected by 2-staged stratified random sampling to represent the population of secondary school children in the state of Selangor, Malaysia. A total of 2,048 school children were enrolled and the level of depression was measured by a self-rated scale, the Children’s Depression Inventory. Results: This study found that the prevalence of possible depressive students in Selangor was 10.3%. There was no difference in the prevalence of depression between rural and urban population. Factors associated with depression were being female, Chinese, parents with low educational level, and high number of siblings, smoking and alcohol abuse. Depression contributed significantly to suicidal tendencies. Conclusions: A sizable proportion of the secondary school children in this population potentially suffer from depression. Psychological interventions are needed to ease this psychological burden and ensure their well being. Key words: Depression, secondary school students, factors associated
