Radiation Pressure Supported Starburst Disks and AGN Fueling
We consider the structure of marginally Toomre-stable starburst disks under
the assumption that radiation pressure on dust grains provides the dominant
vertical support against gravity. This is particularly appropriate when the
disk is optically thick to its own IR radiation, as in the central regions of
ULIRGs. Because the disk radiates at its Eddington limit, the Schmidt-law for
star formation changes in the optically-thick limit, with the star formation
rate per unit area scaling as Sigma_g/kappa, where Sigma_g is the gas surface
density and kappa is the mean opacity. We show that optically thick starburst
disks have a characteristic flux and dust effective temperature of F ~ 10^{13}
L_sun/kpc^2 and T_eff ~ 90K, respectively. We compare our predictions with
observations and find good agreement. We extend our model from many-hundred
parsec scales to sub-parsec scales and address the problem of fueling AGN. We
assume that angular momentum transport proceeds via global torques rather than
a local viscosity. We account for the radial depletion of gas due to star
formation and find a strong bifurcation between two classes of disk models: (1)
solutions with a starburst on large scales that consumes all of the gas with
little fueling of a central AGN and (2) models with an outer large-scale
starburst accompanied by a more compact starburst on 1-10 pc scales and a
bright central AGN. The luminosity of the latter models is in many cases
dominated by the AGN. We show that the vertical thickness of the starburst disk
on pc scales can approach h ~ r, perhaps accounting for the nuclear obscuration
in some Type 2 AGN. We also argue that the disk of young stars in the Galactic

Limit cycles in the presence of convection, a travelling wave analysis
We consider a diffusion model with limit cycle reaction functions, in the
presence of convection. We select a set of functions derived from a realistic
reaction model: the Schnakenberg equations. This resultant form is
unsymmetrical. We find a transformation which maps the irregular equations into
model form. Next we transform the dependent variables into polar form. From
here, a travelling wave analysis is performed on the radial variable. Results
are complex, but we make some simple estimates.
We carry out numerical experiments to test our analysis. An initial `knock'
starts the propagation of pattern. The speed of the travelling wave is not
quite as expected. We investigate further. The system demonstrates distinctly
different behaviour to the left and the right. We explain how this phenomenon

In vitro fermentation of different ratios of alfalfa and starch or inulin incubated with an equine faecal inoculum
The aim of this work was to assess the impact of substituting starch (S) or inulin (I) with high-temperature dried alfalfa (HTDA) as substrates for in vitro fermentation with an equine faecal inoculum. A series of experiments were conducted to assess the fermentation kinetics of HTDA (chopped [CA] or ground [GA]) and either S or I mixed in the following ratios; 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60 and 20:80S/I: CA/GA, respectively. For each experiment, a further set of bottles containing identical ratios of S/I: CA/GA were also prepared, with the exception that the alfalfa received a simulated foregut digestion treatment (SFD) as prior to incubation. Total gas production increased (P<0.05) as the ratio of S/I to alfalfa increased. Total gas production was lower in bottles containing SFD-treated alfalfa (P<0.001). Dry matter loss decreased proportionately with increasing level of alfalfa substitution of S/I (P<0.001). Values for pH were lower in bottles containing S or I, with pH values in bottles containing S alone falling to almost 6 and those with I dropping to pH 5 and under. However, the substitution of S or I with 40% alfalfa produced pH values above 6.7, which is within physiological levels encountered in the large intestine of the horse. Consequently, there appears to be considerable potential to buffer the deleterious effects of high-starch/fructan diets with the substitution of these substrates with high-temperature dried alfalfa
A minimal model for chaotic shear banding in shear-thickening fluids
We present a minimal model for spatiotemporal oscillation and rheochaos in
shear-thickening complex fluids at zero Reynolds number. In the model, a
tendency towards inhomogeneous flows in the form of shear bands combines with a
slow structural dynamics, modelled by delayed stress relaxation. Using
Fourier-space numerics, we study the nonequilibrium `phase diagram' of the
fluid as a function of a steady mean (spatially averaged) stress, and of the
relaxation time for structural relaxation. We find several distinct regions of
periodic behavior (oscillating bands, travelling bands, and more complex
oscillations) and also regions of spatiotemporal rheochaos. A low-dimensional
truncation of the model retains the important physical features of the full
model (including rheochaos) despite the suppression of sharply defined
interfaces between shear bands. Our model maps onto the FitzHugh-Nagumo model
for neural network dynamics, with an unusual form of long-range coupling.Comment: Revised version (in particular, new section III.E. and Appendix A
A note on monopole moduli spaces
We discuss the structure of the framed moduli space of Bogomolny monopoles
for arbitrary symmetry breaking and extend the definition of its stratification
to the case of arbitrary compact Lie groups. We show that each stratum is a
union of submanifolds for which we conjecture that the natural metric is
hyperKahler. The dimensions of the strata and of these submanifolds are
calculated, and it is found that for the latter, the dimension is always a
