    Young Children’s Understanding of Beliefs About Moral and Conventional Rule Violations

    Children of ages 3–5 (N = 62) were assessed by using standard theory-of-mind tasks and unusual belief tasks related to false information and beliefs endorsing violations of moral (welfare and fairness) and social conventional (school rules) domains. Younger children (under 5 years) did not accurately attribute unusual factual beliefs or beliefs endorsing rule violations whether or not they passed the standard theory-of-mind tasks. Only participants over age 5 performed above chance in attributions of unusual beliefs. Domain differences indicated that beliefs endorsing harm were often most difficult for children, perhaps because the beliefs were the least plausible and most obligatory

    Being the parent of a child with limb difference who has been provided with an artificial limb:An interpretative phenomenological analysis

    Purpose: Rehabilitative care for children with limb difference often includes the provision and use of an artificial (or prosthetic) limb. Of key influence in this process is how parents experience and respond to their child’s limb difference and prosthesis use. However, research on this is lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the experiences of parenting a child with limb difference who had been provided with an artificial limb. Design: Semi-structured interviews took place with seven parents. Interview data was recorded, transcribed and analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results: The analysis identified four themes: (1) managing the initial emotional experience through the development of coping resources; (2) opportunities through prosthesis use and its relationship with “normality”; (3) managing and making sense of social reactions toward their child; (4) the intrinsic role of support: developing a collective connection and enabling shared knowledge. Conclusions: The study highlighted salient aspects to parents’ experiences and sense-making that can inform clinical support. Emotional support, the management of social responses, and the holistic co-ordination of healthcare support with peer support networks are discussed. Healthcare professionals involved in the prosthetic rehabilitation process should look to explore these meanings to help support the management of the child’s prosthesis use.Implications for rehabilitation Understanding the sense-making of parents is important in effective service provision for children with limb difference. Service provision for children with limb difference should consider the support needs of parents. Working with limb difference charities and voluntary organizations could help services develop needed parent-to-parent support networks

    The Delhi Flag Handover Ceremony (DFHC) was a project delivered by Glasgow Life on behalf of the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee. The Handover Ceremony took place towards the end of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and reflects the passing of responsibility for the Games from one host to the next (i.e. Glasgow). This report reflects on Glasgow’s approach to the DFHC, specifically its recruitment of a Mass Cast of 348 volunteers to participate in an 8-minute performance in Delhi. Glasgow sought to secure participation from across Scotland drawing on both semi-professional and amateur performers

    Effect of post processing on the creep performance of laser powder bed fused Inconel 718

    In this study, the creep performance of laser powder bed fusion manufactured Inconel 718 specimens is studied in detail and compared with conventional hot-rolled specimens alongside as-built then heat-treated and as-built then hot-isostatic pressed specimens. Hot-rolled specimens showed the best creep resistance, while the hot-isostatic pressed specimens yielded the worst performance, inferior to the as-built condition. Creep testing of all samples showed increased secondary creep rate was consistently correlated with a reduced life. Fractography revealed intergranular fracture was the primary failure mode for all as-built samples. Preferential intergranular precipitation in the case of the hot-isostatic pressed specimens during hot-isostatic pressing extensive intergranular cracking as the primary failure mechanism. Heat-treated specimens possessed only sparse intergranular precipitates, thereby explaining an improved creep lifetime. The hot-rolled specimens, having smallest grain size, showed the least extensive cracking, particularly in locations of finest grains, explaining avoidance of intergranular fracture as a key creep mechanism, thereby explaining the ductile creep fracture surfaces in the case of the hot-rolled samples

    Electrolyte jet machining for surface texturing of Inconel 718

    Electrolyte jet machining is an emerging non-conventional machining process which is capable of selectively applying multi-scale surface textures. Surfaces processed in this way do not suffer from thermal damage and hence this technique is highly suited to finishing procedures in high value manufacturing across the aerospace and biomedical sectors. Furthermore, input variables can be modified dynamically to create functional graduation across component surfaces. In this study, the development and design of a custom-built EJM system is described, and the capability of the EJM platform to machine and create surface textures in Inconel 718, a widely used nickel based super alloy, is investigated. Through control of machine path programming and parameter variation, multi-scale surface textures are created which have the potential to enhance bonding with subsequent coating layers and also provide fluid dynamic advantage

    Despite the political mandate of Article 2.1(c) of the Paris Agreement (United Nations 2015. ‘Adoption of the Paris Agreement.’ 21st Conference of the Parties, Paris, United Nations, 2) to align finance flows ‘with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development,’ many investors do not manage physical and transitional climate risks. The Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures’ 2019 Status Report highlighted this asymmetry. The following paperseeks to evaluate the efficacy of informing investors about the alignment of their portfolios with the Paris Agreement. Based on survey feedback from a 2017 pilot study conducted with Swiss pension funds and insurance companies, the results suggest that after the pilot 40% of respondents implemented a climate strategy or integrated climate criteria into their investment process, showing the potential impact of climate assessments on portfolio strategy. This fact affirms both the positives of portfolio climate assessments, but also the need to explore alternatives avenues for engaging with investors regarding climate risks

    The 2016 release of Foundations in Wisconsin marks the 35th edition of the print directory and the 16th edition of the online version. The directory is designed as a research tool for grantseekers interested in locating information on private, corporate, and community foundations registered in Wisconsin. Each entry in this new edition has been updated or reviewed to provide the most current information available. Most of the data was drawn from IRS 990-PF tax returns filed by the foundations. Additional information was obtained from surveys, foundation websites, and annual reports. This edition paints a very positive picture of financial growth for Wisconsin foundations. Both grant and asset totals have risen to all-time highs. Of particular note, total grants broke the 600millionbarrier,increasingby8600 million barrier, increasing by 8% to 623 million. Additionally, 58 new foundations have been identified this year. (See page 269 for the complete list.)     Increasing levels of youth unemployment and learners’ poor performance at school have led to claims that the matric certificate no longer has much value in the labour market. However, the evidence does not support this claim. While the labour market conditions facing secondary school graduates have indeed worsened with time, the value of a matric certificate relative to that of grade 10 and 11 has remained positive both in terms of earnings and the likelihood of finding employment

    Spheroidisation of metal powder by pulsed electron beam irradiation

    A new powder spheroidisation process has been demonstrated using a large-area, pulsed electron beam technique. This was used to dramatically improve the surface morphology of Stellite 6 metal powder. Powder surface asperities up to 20â€ŻÎŒm size can be eliminated by melting and incorporation into the near-surface of the particle. Surface finish is significantly improved. Agitation and rotation of particles due to a beam-induced stress wave enables the irradiation of multiples sides of particles, resulting in uniformly smoothed particles after sufficient pulses. Elemental analysis revealed no measurable contamination as a result of the process. Transmission electron microscopy showed a dense layer is produced within a zone up to 3â€ŻÎŒm beneath the surface, with a substantially reduced grain size from ca. 2â€ŻÎŒm diameter in the bulk to ca. 40 nm. Elemental homogenisation also was accompanied by grain refinement. The irradiated Stellite 6 showed a reduced basic flowability energy (583 mJ compared to 627 mJ for the untreated), explained by reduced particle-particle cohesion and interlocking, and an increased conditioned bulk density of 4.57 g/ml compared to 4.33 g/ml due to satellite/asperity reduction
