Hiring School Counselors in Faith-Based Schools

    Get PDF
Although school counseling candidates in faith-based schools may possess an extraordinary résumé, it is essential that their beliefs and behaviors be compatible with the mission and philosophy of the school for which they are interviewing. If hiring practices are not addressed in faith-based schools, these schools run the risk of losing their identity. This article offers a pastoral model for interviewing and hiring Catholic school counselors. It is a model that assists school leaders and those responsible for hiring school counselors in faith-based schools to transform what would otherwise be a functional job into a pastoral ministry, thereby advancing the religious identity and unique mission of their schools

Effecting a University’s Mission: The Praxis of Charism

    Get PDF
Religious communities engaged in educational ministry have been challenged by the Second Vatican Council both to reappropriate the initial charism of their founders and to review their ministry in the schools staffed by their communities. Compounding this challenge has been the shift in the number of members of the founding congregations in their faculties. This article reframes the discussion in terms of an issue of committed culture. After presenting a theological foundation and sociohistorical critique of charism, a praxis model for mission effectiveness as it is applied to student orientation within a Catholic university setting will be introduced

History of Education in the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation of North Dakota

    Get PDF
The aim of this thesis is to trace the history of education of the Indians living in the Turtle Mountains. The education of these people has passed through several stages of development. The mission, the federal government and the public schools have provided education in varying degrees at different times. The educational problem of the Turtle Mountains is unique. Indian people live on tax-free land assigned to them by treaty. As a result of these treaties between the Indian tribes and the federal government, most of the community services, including schools, usually provided for by local taxation, have been provided for by the federal government. The various religious groups have made very important contributions to the education of the many Indian tribes in the United States. Mission schools have provided for the education of a large percentage of Indian pupils. Catholic missionaries were the first to establish schools in the Turtle Mountains, and still continue to play a large part in education on the reservation. The background of the people, and their present economic condition make education a very important factor in a program of rehabilitation. Welfare office records indicate that the average education of adult Indian people applying for aid is less than a third grade level. The history of education may martially account for this extremely low average education. It is hoped that the facts assembled will serve two purposes. First, to preserve the accumulated accounts of the development of education in this area, together with factual information on groups and individuals contributing to it. Second, the data should serve as a guide for future planning for education in the area

Thermal barrier coatings for gas turbine and diesel engines

The present state of development of thin thermal barrier coatings for aircraft gas turbine engines and thick thermal barrier coatings for truck diesel engines is assessed. Although current thermal barrier coatings are flying in certain gas turbine engines, additional advances will be needed for future engines. Thick thermal barrier coatings for truck diesel engines have advanced to the point where they are being seriously considered for the next generation of engine. Since coatings for truck engines is a young field of inquiry, continued research and development efforts will be required to help bring this technology to commercialization

Natural Enemies of Cranberry Fruitworm, \u3ci\u3eAcrobasis Vaccinii\u3c/i\u3e, (Lepidoptera: Pyraudae) in Michigan Highbush Blueberries

A two-year study was conducted in Michigan highbush blueberries to determine the complex of parasitoids attacking cranberry fruitworm, Acrobasis vaccinii. Eight parasitoid species and one fungal pathogen were collected. Parasitism of collected hosts ranged from 6.6% to 28.1%. The more common larval parasitoid encountered was Campoletis patsuiketorum (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). The more common parasitoid recovered from fruitworm hibernacula was Villa lateralis (Diptera: Bombyliidae). This study documented six unreported natural enemies of cranberry fruitworm, including C. patsuiketorum; V. lateralis; Diadegma compressum (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae); Compsilura concinnata (Diptera: Tachinidae); Memorilla pyste (Diptera: Tachinidae); an undescribed Microtypus species (Hymenoptera: Braconidae); and a fungal pathogen, Paecilomyces near farinosus. This is the first known host association for the undescribed Microtypus species, and increases the known parasitoid complex of cranberry fruitworm to 17 species

In Service of Mission: Assessing Catholic School Guidance Counselors

    Get PDF
Catholic schools are set apart from public schools in that Catholic schools aim to create for the school community an atmosphere enlivened by the Gospel spirit of freedom and charity. Those who serve in Catholic schools, therefore, need to understand their role as unique, that is, faith driven. The purpose of this study was to assess this uniqueness as understood and practiced by Catholic school counselors. The findings of this study note positive trends among Catholic school counselors, particularly in terms of academic preparation and training as well as some incorporation of Catholic identity and mission into their ministry with students. Among these findings, the most significant is that Catholic school counselors need to incorporate the identity and unique mission of the Catholic Church more effectively into their work with students, parents, teachers, and administrators. Beginning with the hiring interview and the orientation process, Catholic school counselors must make a conscious effort to thread the Catholic identity, as it is embodied in the school\u27s unique mission, into their guidance programs, thereby distinguishing what they do as a ministry rather than a job
