    Time-dependent effects in melting and phase change for laser-shocked iron

    Using the Linac Coherent Light Source facility at the Stanford Linac Coherent Light Source National Accelerator Laboratory, we have observed X-ray scattering from iron compressed with laser-driven shocks to earth-core-like pressures above 400 GPa. The data show cases where melting is incomplete and we observe hexagonal-close-packed crystal structure at shock compressed densities up to 14.0 g cm-3 but no evidence of a double-hexagonal-close-packed crystal. The observation of a crystalline structure at these densities, where shock heating is expected to be in excess of the equilibrium melt temperature, may indicate superheating of the solid. These results are important for equation of state modeling at high strain rates relevant for impact scenarios and laser-driven shock-wave experiments

    Associations of Comorbid Conditions and Transitions Across States of Knee Osteoarthritis in a Community-Based Cohort

    Objective: To examine relationships between knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and obesity, diabetes mellitus (DM), and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: Associations of time-dependent obesity, DM, and CVD with KOA transition states over approximately 18 years were examined among 4093 participants from a community-based cohort. Transition states were 1) no knee symptoms and no radiographic KOA (rKOA; Kellgren-Lawrence grade ≥2 in at least one knee), 2) asymptomatic rKOA, 3) knee symptoms only, 4) symptomatic rKOA (sxKOA; rKOA and symptoms in same knee). Markov multistate models estimated adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between comorbid conditions and transitions across states, adjusting for baseline age, sex, race, education, enrollment cohort, birth year, and time-dependent knee injury history. Results: At baseline, 40% of participants had obesity, 13% had DM, and 22% had CVD (mean age = 61 years; 34% Black; 37% male). Compared with those without obesity, those with obesity had a higher hazard of worsening from no rKOA/no symptoms to asymptomatic rKOA (aHR = 1.7; 95% CI = 1.3-2.2) and from knee symptoms to sxKOA (aHR = 1.7; 95% CI = 1.3-2.3), as well as a lower hazard of symptom resolution from sxKOA to asymptomatic rKOA (aHR = 0.5 [95% = CI 0.4-0.7]). Compared with those without CVD, those with CVD had a higher hazard of worsening from no rKOA/symptoms to knee symptoms (aHR = 1.5; 95% CI = 1.1-2.1). DM was not associated with transitions of rKOA. Conclusion: Prevention of obesity and CVD may limit the development or worsening of rKOA and symptoms

    Quantum theory of the far-off-resonance continuous-wave Raman laser: Heisenberg-Langevin approach

    We present the quantum theory of the far-off-resonance continuous-wave Raman laser using the Heisenberg-Langevin approach. We show that the simplified quantum Langevin equations for this system are mathematically identical to those of the nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator in the time domain with the following associations: pump pump, Stokes signal, and Raman coherence idler. We derive analytical results for both the steady-state behavior and the time-dependent noise spectra, using standard linearization procedures. In the semiclassical limit, these results match with previous purely semiclassical treatments, which yield excellent agreement with experimental observations. The analytical time-dependent results predict perfect photon statistics conversion from the pump to the Stokes and nonclassical behavior under certain operational conditions

    Online teacher development: collaborating in a virtual learning environment

    Over recent years educational institutions have been making increasing use of virtual environments to set up collaborative activities for learners. While it is recognized that teachers play an important role in facilitating learner collaboration online they may not have the necessary skills to do so successfully. Thus, a small scale professional development programme was set up and piloted by two distance universities. The aims were to develop teachers’ experience of online group work; to trial a set of pilot activities which would raise awareness of factors contributing to successful collaborative online activity; and to identify professional development needs in this area. This article reports on the hands-on experience of a group of 20 teachers, examines some of the competences that are needed to successfully collaborate in virtual environments, and presents the skills that teachers need to foster online collaborative learning in the virtual classroom. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected, examining the levels of participation among participants, the collaborative activity of two groups, and teacher perception of the collaboration which took place. The skills identified include planning and managing the collaboration, designing appropriate activities, giving clear instructions and getting students to negotiate ground rules for participation, moderating at the right level, and choosing the right environment and the appropriate tool(s). While this study was carried out with language teachers, many of the findings are applicable to other subject areas where growing emphasis is placed on the development of collaborative skills

    Pion emission from the T2K replica target: method, results and application

    The T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan needs precise predictions of the initial neutrino flux. The highest precision can be reached based on detailed measurements of hadron emission from the same target as used by T2K exposed to a proton beam of the same kinetic energy of 30 GeV. The corresponding data were recorded in 2007-2010 by the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS using a replica of the T2K graphite target. In this paper details of the experiment, data taking, data analysis method and results from the 2007 pilot run are presented. Furthermore, the application of the NA61/SHINE measurements to the predictions of the T2K initial neutrino flux is described and discussed.Comment: updated version as published by NIM

    Trends in Bacterial Vaginosis Prevalence in a Cohort of U.S. Women with and at Risk for HIV

    Background: Women with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) often have bacterial vaginosis (BV). The goal of this analysis was to assess how BV prevalence changed over time and across U.S. regions in enrollment cohorts of the Women's Interagency HIV Study. Methods: In a multisite study, BV was diagnosed retrospectively when pH and two of three other Amsel criteria were met. Prevalence was determined across four recruitment waves: 1994-5, 2001-2, 2011-2, and 2013-5. Generalized estimating equation multivariable logistic regression models assessed changes in visit prevalence across waves after controlling for HIV disease severity and other risks. Results: Among 4,790 women (3,539 with HIV and 1,251 without HIV), BV was diagnosed at 7,870 (12%) of 64,444 visits. Baseline prevalence across enrollment waves was 15.0%-19.2%, but declined in all cohorts, with prevalence in the initial cohort falling to 3.9% in the 1994-5 cohort after up to 21 years of continuous observation. Prevalence varied within U.S. regions. HIV status was not associated with BV. Conclusion: BV prevalence decreased with time in study. Prevalence varied across sites, but was not uniformly increased or decreased in any U.S. region. Clinical Trials.gov identifier: NCT00000797
