    Ferroelectric phase transition and the lattice thermal conductivity of Pb1-xGexTe alloys

    We show how tuning the proximity to the soft optical mode phase transition via chemical composition affects the lattice thermal conductivity κ of Pb1-xGexTe alloys. Using first-principles virtual-crystal simulations, we find that the anharmonic contribution to κ is minimized at the phase transition due to the maximized acoustic-optical anharmonic interaction. Mass disorder significantly lowers and flattens the dip in the anharmonic κ over a wide composition range, thus shifting the κ minimum away from the phase transition. The total κ and its anharmonic contribution vary continuously between the rocksalt and rhombohedral phases as expected for the second-order phase transition. The actual phase and its strength of resonant bonding play a less prominent role in reducing the κ of Pb1-xGexTe alloys than the proximity to the phase transition and the atomic mass. Our results show that alloys with soft optical mode transitions are promising materials for achieving low thermal conductivity and possibly high thermoelectric efficiency

    A study to assess the prevalence of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in inter-county hurling

    Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB) is an acute, transient airway narrowing occurring after exercise which may impact athletic performance. Studies report 10% of the general population and up to 90% of asthmatics experience EIB. Ninety-two players from three elite hurling squads underwent a spirometric field-based provocation test with real-time heart rate monitoring and lactate measurements to ensure adequate exertion. Players with a new diagnosis of EIB and those with a negative field-test but with a previous label of EIB or asthma underwent further reversibility testing and if negative, methacholine challenge. Eight (8.7%) of players had EIB, with one further athlete having asthma with a negative field test. Interestingly, only three out of 12 players who had previously been physician-labelled with EIB or asthma had their diagnosis objectively confirmed. Our study highlights the role of objective testing in EIB

    SPYGLASS. III. The Fornax-Horologium Association and its Traceback History within the Austral Complex

    The study of young associations is essential for building a complete record of local star formation processes. The Fornax-Horologium association (FH), including the χ1\chi^1 Fornacis cluster, represents one of the nearest young stellar populations to the Sun. This association has recently been linked to the Tuc-Hor, Carina, and Columba associations, building an extensive "Austral Complex" almost entirely within 150 pc. Using Gaia astrometry and photometry in addition to new spectroscopic observations, we perform the deepest survey of FH to date, identifying over 300 candidate members, nearly doubling the known population. By combining this sample with literature surveys of the other constituent populations, we produce a contiguous stellar population covering the entire Austral Complex, allowing the definitions of sub-populations to be re-assessed along with connections to external populations. This analysis recovers new definitions for FH, Tuc-Hor, Columba, and Carina, while also revealing a connection between the Austral complex and the Sco-Cen-affiliated Platais 8 cluster. This suggests that the Austral complex may be just a small component of a much larger and more diverse star formation event. Computing ages and tracing stellar populations back to formation reveals two distinct nodes of cospatial and continuous formation in the Austral Complex, one containing Tuc-Hor, and the other containing FH, Carina, and Columba. This mirrors recent work showing similar structure elsewhere, suggesting that these nodes, which only emerge through the use of traceback, may represent the clearest discrete unit of local star formation, and a key building block needed to reconstruct larger star-forming events.Comment: Accepted to ApJ; 29 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables in two-column AASTEX63 forma

    SPYGLASS. II. The Multi-Generational and Multi-Origin Star Formation History of Cepheus Far North

    Young stellar populations provide a record of past star formation, and by establishing their members' dynamics and ages, it is possible to reconstruct the full history of star formation events. Gaia has greatly expanded the number of accessible stellar populations, with one of the most notable recently-discovered associations being Cepheus Far North (CFN), a population containing hundreds of members spanning over 100 pc. With its proximity (d \lesssim 200 pc), apparent substructure, and relatively small population, CFN represents a manageable population to study in depth, with enough evidence of internal complexity to produce a compelling star formation story. Using Gaia astrometry and photometry combined with additional spectroscopic observations, we identify over 500 candidate CFN members spread across 7 subgroups. Combining ages from isochrones, asteroseismology, dynamics, and lithium depletion, we produce well-constrained ages for all seven subgroups, revealing a largely continuous 10 Myr star formation history in the association. By tracing back the present-day populations to the time of their formation, we identify two spatially and dynamically distinct nodes in which stars form, one associated with β\beta Cephei which shows mostly co-spatial formation, and one associated with EE Draconis with a more dispersed star formation history.     Platelets: From Formation to Function

    Platelets are small, anucleate cells that travel as resting discoid fragments in the circulation. Their average circulating life span is 8–9 days, and their formation is an elegant and finely orchestrated series of cellular processes known as megakaryocytopoiesis and thrombopoiesis. This involves the commitment of haematopoietic stem cells, proliferation, terminal differentiation of megakaryocytic progenitors and maturation of megakaryocytes to produce functional platelets. This complex process occurs in specialised endosteal and vascular niches in the bone marrow where megakaryocytes form proplatelet projections, releasing platelets into the circulation. Upon contact with an injured blood vessel, they prevent blood loss through processes of adhesion, activation and aggregation. Platelets play a central role in cardiovascular disease (CVD), both in the development of atherosclerosis and as the cellular mediator in the development of thrombosis. Platelets have diverse roles not limited to thrombosis/haemostasis, also being involved in many vascular inflammatory conditions. Depending on the physiological context, platelet functions may be protective or contribute to adverse thrombotic and inflammatory outcomes. In this chapter, we will discuss platelets in context of their formation and function. Because of their multifaceted role in maintaining physiological homeostasis, current and development of platelet function testing platforms will be discussed

    Broadband phonon scattering in PbTe-based materials driven near ferroelectric phase transition by strain or alloying

    The major obstacle in the design of materials with low lattice thermal conductivity is the difficulty in efficiently scattering phonons across the entire frequency spectrum. Using first-principles calculations, we show that driving PbTe materials to the brink of the ferroelectric phase transition could be a powerful strategy to solve this problem. We illustrate this concept by applying biaxial tensile (001) strain to PbTe and its alloys with another rocksalt IV-VI material, PbSe; and by alloying PbTe with a rhombohedral IV-VI material, GeTe. This induces extremely soft optical modes at the zone center, which increase anharmonic acoustic-optical coupling and decrease phonon lifetimes at all frequencies. We predict that PbTe, Pb(Se,Te), and (Pb,Ge)Te alloys driven close to the phase transition in the described manner will have considerably lower lattice thermal conductivity than that of PbTe (by a factor of 2–3). The proposed concept may open new opportunities for the development of more efficient thermoelectric materials

    Helicobacter pylori-induced inhibition of vascular endothelial cell functions: a role for VacA-dependent nitric oxide reduction

    Epidemiological and clinical studies provide compelling support for a causal relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and endothelial dysfunction, leading to vascular diseases. However, clear biochemical evidence for this association is limited. In the present study, we have conducted a comprehensive investigation of endothelial injury in bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) induced by H. pylori-conditioned medium (HPCM) prepared from H. pylori 60190 [vacuolating cytotoxin A (Vac(+))]. BAECs were treated with either unconditioned media, HPCM (0-25% vol/vol), or Escherichia coli-conditioned media for 24 h, and cell functions were monitored. Vac(+) HPCM significantly decreased BAEC proliferation, tube formation, and migration (by up to 44%, 65%, and 28%, respectively). Posttreatment, we also observed sporadic zonnula occludens-1 immunolocalization along the cell-cell border, and increased BAEC permeability to FD40 Dextran, indicating barrier reduction. These effects were blocked by 5-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino)benzoic acid (VacA inhibitor) and were not observed with conditioned media prepared from either VacA-deleted H. pylori or E. coli. The cellular mechanism mediating these events was also considered. Vac(+) HPCM (but not Vac(-)) reduced nitric oxide (NO) by \u3e50%, whereas S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine, an NO donor, recovered all Vac(+) HPCM-dependent effects on cell functions. We further demonstrated that laminar shear stress, an endothelial NO synthase/NO stimulus in vivo, could also recover the Vac(+) HPCM-induced decreases in BAEC functions. This study shows, for the first time, a significant proatherogenic effect of H. pylori-secreted factors on a range of vascular endothelial dysfunction markers. Specifically, the VacA-dependent reduction in endothelial NO is indicated in these events. The atheroprotective impact of laminar shear stress in this context is also evident

    A pilot study demonstrating the altered gut microbiota functionality in stable adults with Cystic Fibrosis

    peer-reviewedCystic Fibrosis (CF) and its treatment result in an altered gut microbiota composition compared to non-CF controls. However, the impact of this on gut microbiota functionality has not been extensively characterised. Our aim was to conduct a proof-of-principle study to investigate if measurable changes in gut microbiota functionality occur in adult CF patients compared to controls. Metagenomic DNA was extracted from faecal samples from six CF patients and six non-CF controls and shotgun metagenomic sequencing was performed on the MiSeq platform. Metabolomic analysis using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was conducted on faecal water. The gut microbiota of the CF group was significantly different compared to the non-CF controls, with significantly increased Firmicutes and decreased Bacteroidetes. Functionality was altered, with higher pathway abundances and gene families involved in lipid (e.g. PWY 6284 unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis (p = 0.016)) and xenobiotic metabolism (e.g. PWY-5430 meta-cleavage pathway of aromatic compounds (p = 0.004)) in CF patients compared to the controls. Significant differences in metabolites occurred between the two groups. This proof-of-principle study demonstrates that measurable changes in gut microbiota functionality occur in CF patients compared to controls. Larger studies are thus needed to interrogate this further
