    Sports Marketing Ethics in Today\u27s Marketplace

    Sports marketing is a fast-growing business endeavor. However, certain aspects of it have drawn criticisms from several corners (e.g., media, government, coaches, and fans). This paper raises a number of ethical questions about various dimensions of sports marketing. Advice for addressing some of the ethical problems that occur is provided. The paper specifically asks if organizations using professional sports associations as a promotional lever for increasing sales can be hurt by a lack of ethics on the part of the leagues, teams, or players. It also implies that sport organizations, regardless of economic benefits derived or strong player unions, have an obligation to create a positive and sustainable ethical climate and deliver an enforceable ethical code

Philosophers and academics alike, from the lectures by Michel Foucault in the latter half of the 20th century, to the publications of David Harvey and Wendy Brown today, the only constant is that Neoliberalism is a complex and nuanced system of internal governmentality. These fundamental changes to our paradigms trigger an evolved adaptively plastic mechanism that regulates our inclusive and exclusive moralities. By analyzing the mechanic structure of Neoliberalism and how it changes our paradigms of identity and relations, we may begin to understand how these paradigms have biocultural effects on our concepts of morality

    Energy consumption of small scale fishing vessel operations in Indonesia: A case study in Palabuhanratu, Indonesia

    About 79% of the global fishing fleet is small motorized boats typically operating in coastal areas, supplying local markets, and contributing to human well-being through food supplies and economic development. For example, Indonesian fisheries which predominantly are artisanal fishing, have supported 54% of animal protein intake, accounted for 2% of employment level and increased the fishermen’s prosperity index by 2.44%. However, they cause significant environmental impacts including fish resource depletion and intensive energy use. Balancing the benefits and challenges, sustainably managing these fishing operations is an important yet complex task given the requirements to proportionally account for fish resources, fishing technology and fishery organisation. This paper focusses on, the rarely considered, energy intensity of these operations which is particularly important given its correlation with operational cost, productivity and environmental impact. The research was conducted in Palabuhanratu, Indonesia, which has an artisanal fishing fleet numbering in the hundreds, typical of many developing nations. A comparative study was conducted on the four principal types of vessel in Palabuhanratu: pelagic Danish seiners, hand liners, trammel netters and lift net ferries. Statistics published by the fishing port were used to conclude that of these the trammel netters are the most energy intensive and that, in general, the artisanal fisheries are less energy efficient compared to those in developed countries.     Elliptical-core two mode fiber sensors and devices incorporating photoinduced refractive index gratings

    Results of experiments performed using germanium-doped, elliptical core, two-mode optical fibers whose sensitivity to strain was spatially varied through the use of chirped, refractive-index gratings permanently induced into the core using Argon-ion laser light are presented. This type of distributed sensor falls into the class of eighted-fiber sensors which, through a variety of means, weight the strain sensitivity of a fiber according to a specified spatial profile. We describe results of a weighted-fiber vibration mode filter which successfully enhances the particular vibration mode whose spatial profile corresponds to the profile of the grating chirp. We report on the high temperature survivability of such grating-based sensors and discuss the possibility of multiplexing more than one sensor within a single fiber

    Genome sequence analysis of La Crosse virus and in vitro and in vivo phenotypes

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>La Crosse virus (LACV), family <it>Bunyaviridae</it>, is a mosquito-borne virus recognized as a major cause of pediatric encephalitis in North America with 70–130 symptomatic cases each year. The virus was first identified as a human pathogen in 1960 after its isolation from a 4 year-old girl who suffered encephalitis and died in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The majority of LACV infections are mild and never reported, however, serologic studies estimate infection rates of 10–30/100,000 in endemic areas.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the present study, sequence analysis of the complete LACV genomes of low-passage LACV/human/1960, LACV/mosquito/1978, and LACV/human/1978 strains and of biologically cloned derivatives of each strain, indicates that circulating LACVs are genetically stable over time and geographic distance with 99.6–100%, 98.9–100%, 97.8–99.6%, and 99.2–99.7% amino acid identity for N, NsS, M polyprotein, and L proteins respectively. We identified 5 amino acid differences in the RNA polymerase and 4 nucleotide differences in the non-coding region of the L segment specific to the human virus isolates, which may result in altered disease outcomes.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>All three wild type viruses had similar <it>in vitro </it>growth kinetics and phenotypes in mosquito C6/36 and Vero cells, and similar levels of neurovirulence and neuroinvasiveness in Swiss Webster mice. The biologically cloned derivative of LACV/human/1960 was significantly less neuroinvasive than its uncloned parent and differed in sequence at one amino acid position in the G<sub>N </sub>glycoprotein, identifying this residue as an attenuating mutation.</p

    We derive some analytic closed-form solutions for a class of Riccati equation y'(x)-\lambda_0(x)y(x)\pm y^2(x)=\pm s_0(x), where \lambda_0(x), s_0(x) are C^{\infty}-functions. We show that if \delta_n=\lambda_n s_{n-1}-\lambda_{n-1}s_n=0, where \lambda_{n}= \lambda_{n-1}^\prime+s_{n-1}+\lambda_0\lambda_{n-1} and s_{n}=s_{n-1}^\prime+s_0\lambda_{k-1}, n=1,2,..., then The Riccati equation has a solution given by y(x)=\mp s_{n-1}(x)/\lambda_{n-1}(x). Extension to the generalized Riccati equation y'(x)+P(x)y(x)+Q(x)y^2(x)=R(x) is also investigated.Comment: 10 page
