Synchronization in interacting Scale Free Networks
We study the fluctuations of the interface, in the steady state, of the
Surface Relaxation Model (SRM) in two scale free interacting networks where a
fraction of nodes in both networks interact one to one through external
connections. We find that as increases the fluctuations on both networks
decrease and thus the synchronization reaches an improvement of nearly
when . The decrease of the fluctuations on both networks is due mainly to
the diffusion through external connections which allows to reducing the load in
nodes by sending their excess mostly to low-degree nodes, which we report have
the lowest heights. This effect enhances the matching of the heights of low-and
high-degree nodes as increases reducing the fluctuations. This effect is
almost independent of the degree distribution of the networks which means that
the interconnection governs the behavior of the process over its topology.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. Added a relevant reference.Typos fixe
Intrinsically disordered inhibitor of glutamine synthetase is a functional protein with random-coil-like pKa values
The sequential action of glutamine synthetase (GS) and glutamate synthase (GOGAT) in cyanobacteria allows the incorporation of ammonium into carbon skeletons. In the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, the activity of GS is modulated by the interaction with proteins, which include a 65-residue-long intrinsically disordered protein (IDP), the inactivating factor IF7. This interaction is regulated by the presence of charged residues in both IF7 and GS. To understand how charged amino acids can affect the binding of an IDP with its target and to provide clues on electrostatic interactions in disordered states of proteins, we measured the pKa values of all IF7 acidic groups (Glu32, Glu36, Glu38, Asp40, Asp58, and Ser65, the backbone C-terminus) at 100 mM NaCl concentration, by using NMR spectroscopy. We also obtained solution structures of IF7 through molecular dynamics simulation, validated them on the basis of previous experiments, and used them to obtain theoretical estimates of the pKa values. Titration values for the two Asp and three Glu residues of IF7 were similar to those reported for random-coil models, suggesting the lack of electrostatic interactions around these residues. Furthermore, our results suggest the presence of helical structure at the N-terminus of the protein and of conformational changes at acidic pH values. The overall experimental and in silico findings suggest that local interactions and conformational equilibria do not play a role in determining the electrostatic features of the acidic residues of IF7.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad CTQ 2015-64445-R, BFU2013- 41712-P, BIO2016-75634PJunta de Andalucía BIO-284Generalitat Valenciana Prometeo 018/201
Geomorphology and sedimentology of Porto Pino, SW Sardinia, Western Mediterranean
This paper presents a detailed (1:4000) geomorphological, sedimentological and ecological map of a Mediterranean microtidal wave-dominated beach system and adjacent inner shelf. This map is an innovative cartographic product that integrates a range of processes of present and past timeframes. It is part of a larger cartography on the coastal geomorphology of Sardinia (Italy) aiming to facilitate coastal management practices and future scientific research. The study area is located in SW Sardinia (Italy), and focuses on Porto Pino beach, an important tourist destination of semi-pristine nature, facing environmental pressures common to many coastal Mediterranean settings. In this context, the main human impact on coastal dune habitats is described and a full environmental characterization of the beach system is presented
Recovery of Interdependent Networks
Recent network research has focused on the cascading failures in a system of
interdependent networks and the necessary preconditions for system collapse. An
important question that has not been addressed is how to repair a failing
system before it suffers total breakdown. Here we introduce a recovery strategy
of nodes and develop an analytic and numerical framework for studying the
concurrent failure and recovery of a system of interdependent networks based on
an efficient and practically reasonable strategy. Our strategy consists of
repairing a fraction of failed nodes, with probability of recovery ,
that are neighbors of the largest connected component of each constituent
network. We find that, for a given initial failure of a fraction of
nodes, there is a critical probability of recovery above which the cascade is
halted and the system fully restores to its initial state and below which the
system abruptly collapses. As a consequence we find in the plane of
the phase diagram three distinct phases. A phase in which the system never
collapses without being restored, another phase in which the recovery strategy
avoids the breakdown, and a phase in which even the repairing process cannot
avoid the system collapse
Synchronization in Scale Free networks: The role of finite size effects
Synchronization problems in complex networks are very often studied by
researchers due to its many applications to various fields such as
neurobiology, e-commerce and completion of tasks. In particular, Scale Free
networks with degree distribution , are widely used in
research since they are ubiquitous in nature and other real systems. In this
paper we focus on the surface relaxation growth model in Scale Free networks
with , and study the scaling behavior of the fluctuations, in
the steady state, with the system size . We find a novel behavior of the
fluctuations characterized by a crossover between two regimes at a value of
that depends on : a logarithmic regime, found in previous
research, and a constant regime. We propose a function that describes this
crossover, which is in very good agreement with the simulations. We also find
that, for a system size above , the fluctuations decrease with
, which means that the synchronization of the system improves as
increases. We explain this crossover analyzing the role of the
network's heterogeneity produced by the system size and the exponent of the
degree distribution.Comment: 9 pages and 5 figures. Accepted in Europhysics Letter
Reversible bootstrap percolation: Fake news and fact checking
Bootstrap percolation has been used to describe opinion formation in society
and other social and natural phenomena. The formal equation of the bootstrap
percolation may have more than one solution, corresponding to several stable
fixed points of the corresponding iteration process. We construct a reversible
bootstrap percolation process, which converges to these extra solutions
displaying a hysteresis typical of discontinuous phase transitions. This
process provides a reasonable model for fake news spreading and the
effectiveness of fact checking. We show that sometimes it is not sufficient to
discard all the sources of fake news in order to reverse the belief of a
population that formed under the influence of these sources
The Drosophila caspase Ice is important for many apoptotic cell deaths and for spermatid individualization, a nonapoptotic process
Caspase family proteases play important roles in the regulation of apoptotic cell death. Initiator caspases are activated in response to death stimuli, and they transduce and amplify these signals by cleaving and thereby activating effector caspases. In Drosophila, the initiator caspase Nc (previously Dronc) cleaves and activates two short-prodomain caspases, Dcp-1 and Ice (previously Drice), suggesting these as candidate effectors of Nc killing activity. dcp-1-null mutants are healthy and possess few defects in normally occurring cell death. To explore roles for Ice in cell death, we generated and characterized an Ice null mutant. Animals lacking Ice show a number of defects in cell death, including those that occur during embryonic development, as well as during formation of adult eyes, arista and wings. Ice mutants exhibit subtle defects in the destruction of larval tissues, and do not prevent destruction of salivary glands during metamorphosis. Cells from Ice animals are also markedly resistant to several stresses, including X-irradiation and inhibition of protein synthesis. Mutations in Ice also suppress cell death that is induced by expression of Rpr, Wrinkled (previously Hid) and Grim. These observations demonstrate that Ice plays an important non-redundant role as a cell death effector. Finally, we demonstrate that Ice participates in, but is not absolutely required for, the non-apoptotic process of spermatid differentiation
Models for the magnetic ac susceptibility of granular superferromagnetic CoFe/AlO
The magnetization and magnetic ac susceptibility, ,
of superferromagnetic systems are studied by numerical simulations. The
Cole-Cole plot, vs. , is used as a tool for classifying
magnetic systems by their dynamical behavior. The simulations of the
magnetization hysteresis and the ac susceptibility are performed with two
approaches for a driven domain wall in random media. The studies are motivated
by recent experimental results on the interacting nanoparticle system
CoFe/AlO showing superferromagnetic behavior. Its
Cole-Cole plot indicates domain wall motion dynamics similarly to a disordered
ferromagnet, including pinning and sliding motion. With our models we can
successfully reproduce the features found in the experimental Cole-Cole plots.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
