Get PDF
Sustainable urban planning is the recent phenomenon arising with the sustainability concept. Urban areas are the main bodies where sustainable policies can be applied and sustainability criteria have to be tested in. Urban life is equal to the social system in the contemporary world. Urban sustainable development becomes crucial and this condition can be obtained with urban planning. In this respect, sustainable urban planning becomes a crucial factor to maintain sustainability. Main problem is how to adapt existing planning procedures and processes into sustainable-based urban planning. In this chapter, it is analyzed how Turkish existing urban planning process can be adapted to sustainable urban planning without a radical paradigm shift in the Turkish planning system

    Get PDF
Planning concept is an important concept for realizing the benefits of the tourism sector for localities, public and environment. Planning is a broad term covering several stages from national strategic decisions to unique design applications. Spatial planning is an important aspect of planning with a focus on physical planning in various sectors as well as tourism. The importance of planning has increased with the prominence of a second concept; sustainability. Since the 1970\u27s, sustainability has continuously gained importance in all socio economic aspects of human beings. It is also important for the tourism sector as this sector has effects on the environment. This article tackles the role and importance of physical planning for the development of sustainable tourism concept. For this reason, a model is built for sustainable tourism development in Turkey as Turkish legislation system regarding planning and tourism should be improved in terms of sustainability. The aim of the article is to determine how to integrate spatial planning to sustainable tourism development and to decide the possible pathways within sustainable tourism development. The model considers all stages from large scale decisions to architectural design within a comprehensive manner. This model could be utilized to deal with all aspects of planning, such as policies, strategies, spatial decisions, buil-ding structuring, density, site planning and architecture

Meckel Gruber syndrome is a lethal, autosomal recessive, multisystemic disorder that is associated with a mutation affecting ciliogenesis. In this report, we present two consecutive pregnancies of a woman complicated with MKS. In the first pregnancy with MKS, the amniotic fluid index was under 1 cm with bilateral polycystic fetal kidneys. Post-abortion macroscopic examination of the first fetus revealed multiple congenital anomalies including occipital encephalocele, axial polydactyly and pes equinovarus. Ultrasound examination during the second gestation revealed a singleton pregnancy complicated by MKS. There were multiple congenital anomalies including an occipital encephalocele, polycystic and horseshoe shaped kidneys, axial polydactyly, cleft lip and palate

BackgroundCurrent cervical cancer screening guidelines recommend a 1-year follow-up period for patients with a postmenopausal low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) who are test negative for high-risk human papillomavirus (HrHPV). The aim of this study was to assess whether such patients had an increased immediate risk of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion. MethodsWe assessed 54 HrHPV-negative women with postmenopausal LSIL in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of our hospital between 2012 and 2013. All patients underwent liquid-based cytology and reflex HrHPV testing (for human papillomavirus [HPV] types 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, and 68). Colposcopic examination and guided biopsy were performed by the same gynecologist (MO). ResultsThe average age of the patients was 53.13.2 years. There were 33 patients (61%) with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grade 1 and 21 who were non-dysplastic. None of the patients was positive for CIN 2 or any other lesions. ConclusionsIf the HPV test is negative, repeat cytology after 12 months is recommended by the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology for cases of HrHPV-negative postmenopausal LSIL. We recommend reflex HPV testing as the best choice for patients who test positive for postmenopausal LSIL by Pap smear, in line with the literature. Diagn. Cytopathol. 2016;44:969-974. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a relatively common complication in infertile patients treated with exogenous gonadotropins. Ovarian hyperstimulation in spontaneous pregnancies is a rare but possible. The pathogenesis of spontaneous OHSS is not well known. Risk factors for OHSS are young age, polycystic ovaries, low body mass index, high gonadotropin dose, increased estradiol and human chorionic gonadotropin levels, multiple pregnancy, OHSS history, molar pregnancy and hypothyroidism. In this report we present a case of severe spontaneous OHSS with a brief summary of the literature. She was hospitalized and treated in the clinic with the diagnosis of severe OHSS accompanying spontaneous pregnancy

Abstract

Background

Training of infectious disease (ID) specialists is structured on classical clinical microbiology training in Turkey and ID specialists work as clinical microbiologists at the same time. Hence, this study aimed to determine the clinical skills and knowledge required by clinical microbiologists.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was carried out between June 1, 2010 and September 15, 2010 in 32 ID departments in Turkey. Only patients hospitalized and followed up in the ID departments between January-June 2010 who required consultation with other disciplines were included.

Results

A total of 605 patients undergoing 1343 consultations were included, with pulmonology, neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology, dermatology, haematology, and endocrinology being the most frequent consultation specialties. The consultation patterns were quite similar and were not affected by either the nature of infections or the critical clinical status of ID patients.

Conclusions

The results of our study show that certain internal medicine subdisciplines such as pulmonology, neurology and dermatology appear to be the principal clinical requisites in the training of ID specialists, rather than internal medicine as a whole.</p

This study has investigated the change of the 4th-8th grades science and mathematics course success of 2142 elementary students in low socio-economic status by their grade level and gender via cross-sectional and longitudinal research approaches. Based on the findings of the study, consistent with the recent national and international studies, girls were found to have higher academic success than boys both in science and mathematics. When the changes in the annual science and mathematics course scores are investigated by the grade level, the mean scores of boys were found to decrease with the increasing grade level, whereas no significant change in any direction was observed for the mean scores of girls. Due to this difference, it has been observed that the achievement gap between girls and boys increases as the grade level increases, in favor of girls. Based on the related literature and the results of this study, it has been concluded that the traditional expectations about the gender gap, suggesting the male superiority in elementary science and mathematics courses, are no longer valid in today’s classrooms, even in a sample of students in low socioeconomic level.
