The Reionization History and Early Metal Enrichment inferred from the Gamma-Ray Burst Rate
Based on the gamma-ray burst (GRB) event rate at redshifts of , which is assessed by the spectral peak energy-to-luminosity relation
recently found by Yonetoku et al., we observationally derive the star formation
rate (SFR) for Pop III stars in a high redshift universe. As a result, we find
that Pop III stars could form continuously at . Using the
derived Pop III SFR, we attempt to estimate the ultraviolet (UV) photon
emission rate at in which redshift range no observational
information has been hitherto obtained on ionizing radiation intensity. We find
that the UV emissivity at can make a noticeable contribution
to the early reionization. The maximal emissivity is higher than the level
required to keep ionizing the intergalactic matter at .
However, if the escape fraction of ionizing photons from Pop III objects is
smaller than 10%, then the IGM can be neutralized at some redshift, which may
lead to the double reionization. As for the enrichment, the ejection of all
metals synthesized in Pop III objects is marginally consistent with the IGM
metallicity, although the confinement of metals in Pop III objects can reduce

Collectivity and agency in remembering and reconciliation.
This paper examines how British war veterans fold together war time and post war experiences in practices of remembering and reconciliation. We examine these practices as networks of association between British ex-servicemen (veterans) and the people, places and circumstances associated with their experiences as prisoners in Japan during WW2. We focus on the experience of World War 2 British ex-servicemen (veterans) who were prisoners of war in Far East. During their period of captivity they worked to build Thai-Burma Railway before transfer to a copper mine in Japan. Some 50 years later they participated in a "reconciliation trip" to Japan. We discuss two related issues. First, how and in what ways are the post war lives and war time experiences of these veterans gathered up in the emergent collectivity of such practices? In other words in what ways do these practices emerge and sustain themselves as a process of collection and dispersion of circulating reference in networks of association between people places and things. Second, we examine how accounts of redemption (claims to the consequences of experience as being other than you would expect them to be) create the basis for emergent forms of agency and settlement in expanding networks of remembering and reconciliation
SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory and the asymptotic behavior of the colored Jones polynomial
We clarify and refine the relation between the asymptotic behavior of the
colored Jones polynomial and Chern-Simons gauge theory with complex gauge group
SL(2,C). The precise comparison requires a careful understanding of some
delicate issues, such as normalization of the colored Jones polynomial and the
choice of polarization in Chern-Simons theory. Addressing these issues allows
us to go beyond the volume conjecture and to verify some predictions for the
behavior of the subleading terms in the asymptotic expansion of the colored

Carbon stars in the IRTS survey
We have identified 139 cool carbon stars in the near-infrared
spectro-photometric survey of the InfraRed Telescope in Space (IRTS) from the
conspicuous presence of molecular absorption bands at 1.8, 3.1 and 3.8 microns.
Among them 14 are new, bright (K ~ 4.0-7.0), carbon stars. We find a trend
relating the 3.1 microns band strength to the K-L' color index, which is known
to correlate with mass-loss rate. This could be an effect of a relation between
the depth of the 3.1 microns feature and the degree of development of the
extended stellar atmosphere where dust starts to form.Comment: accepted by the PASP; December 7, 200
ASCA observations of the galactic bulge hard x-ray source GRS 1758--258
GRS 1758-258 is one of the few persistent hard X-ray emitters (E>100 keV) in
the Galaxy. Using the ASCA satellite, we have obtained the first detailed data
on GRS 1758-258 in the 1-10 keV range, where previous observations were
affected by confusion problems caused by the nearby strong source GX5-1. The
spectrum is well described by a power law with photon index 1.7 without strong
Fe emission lines. A prominent soft excess, as observed with ROSAT when the
hard X-ray flux was in a lower intensity state, was not detected. However, the
presence of a soft spectral component, accounting for at most 5% of the 0.1-300
keV flux, cannot be excluded. The accurate measurement of interstellar
absorption (N_H=(1.5+-0.1) x 10^22 cm -2) corresponds to an optical extinction

Spin Transport Properties in Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Spin Chains: Spin Current induced by Twisted Boundary Magnetic Fields
Spin transport properties of the one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnetic
spin systems for both and S=1 are studied by applying twisted boundary
magnetic field. The spin current displays significantly different behavior of
the spin transport properties between and S=1 cases. For the spin-half
case, a London equation for the current and the detection of an alternating
electric field are proposed for the linear response regime. The correlation
functions reveal the spiral nature of spin configuration for both ground state
and the spinon excitations. For the spin-one chain otherwise, a kink is
generated in the ground state for the size is larger than the correlation
length, leading to an exponential dependence of spin current with respect to
the chains length. The midgap state emerges from the degenerate ground state
even for small boundary fields.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
GRB formation rate derived by the Ep-luminosity relation
We estimate a GRB formation rate based on the new relation between the spectral peak energy (Ep) and the peak luminosity. This relation is derived combining the data of Ep and the peak luminosities by BeppoSAX and BATSE, and
it looks considerably tighter and more reliable than the relations suggested by the previous works. Using the new
Ep-luminosity relation, we estimate redshifts of the
689 GRBs without known distances in the BATSE catalog and derive a GRB formation rate as a function of the redshift. For the redshift range of 0 ≤ z ≤ 2, the GRB formation rate increases and is well correlated with the star formation rate while it keeps constant toward z ∼ 12
Fast ignition driven by quasi-monoenergetic ions: Optimal ion type and reduction of ignition energies with an ion beam array
Fast ignition of inertial fusion targets driven by quasi-monoenergetic ion
beams is investigated by means of numerical simulations. Light and intermediate
ions such as lithium, carbon, aluminium and vanadium have been considered.
Simulations show that the minimum ignition energies of an ideal configuration
of compressed Deuterium-Tritium are almost independent on the ion atomic
number. However, they are obtained for increasing ion energies, which scale,
approximately, as Z^2, where Z is the ion atomic number. Assuming that the ion
beam can be focused into 10 {\mu}m spots, a new irradiation scheme is proposed
to reduce the ignition energies. The combination of intermediate Z ions, such
as 5.5 GeV vanadium, and the new irradiation scheme allows a reduction of the
number of ions required for ignition by, roughly, three orders of magnitude
when compared with the standard proton fast ignition scheme
