A double-slit proposal for quantum annealing
We formulate and analyze a double-slit proposal for quantum annealing, which
involves observing the probability of finding a two-level system (TLS)
undergoing evolution from a transverse to a longitudinal field in the ground
state at the final time . We demonstrate that for annealing schedules
involving two consecutive diabatic transitions, an interference effect is
generated akin to a double-slit experiment. The observation of oscillations in
the ground state probability as a function of (before the adiabatic limit
sets in) then constitutes a sensitive test of coherence between energy
eigenstates. This is further illustrated by analyzing the effect of coupling
the TLS to a thermal bath: increasing either the bath temperature or the
coupling strength results in a damping of these oscillations. The theoretical
tools we introduce significantly simplify the analysis of the generalized
Landau-Zener problem. Furthermore, our analysis connects quantum annealing
algorithms exhibiting speedups via the mechanism of coherent diabatic
transitions to near-term experiments with quantum annealing hardware.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figure
Power-over-Tether UAS Leveraged for Nearly Indefinite Meteorological Data Acquisition In the Platte River Basin
The integration of unmanned aerial systems (UASs) has increased in the field of agriculture. These systems can provide data that was previously difficult to obtain to help increase efficiency and production. Typical commercial off the shelf (COTS) UASs have significant limitations in the form of small payloads, and short flight times which inhibit their ability to provide significant quantities of useful data. We present the development of a novel power-over-tether UAS that leverages the physical presence of the tether to integrate sensors at multiple altitudes along the tether. The UAS can acquire data nearly indefinitely to sense atmospheric conditions and gradients along the tether. We present the development of the prototyped system, along with the results of field experiments where we demonstrate 6 hours of continuous flight at 50 feet altitude, and a 1 hour flight at sunset to acquire atmospheric temperature from an array of sensors. An evaluation of the systems performance is presented along with a discussion of the systems future implications

Mean-field solution of the parity-conserving kinetic phase transition in one dimension
A two-offspring branching annihilating random walk model, with finite
reaction rates, is studied in one-dimension. The model exhibits a transition
from an active to an absorbing phase, expected to belong to the
universality class embracing systems that possess two symmetric absorbing
states, which in one-dimensional systems, is in many cases equivalent to parity
conservation. The phase transition is studied analytically through a mean-field
like modification of the so-called {\it parity interval method}. The original
method of parity intervals allows for an exact analysis of the
diffusion-controlled limit of infinite reaction rate, where there is no active
phase and hence no phase transition. For finite rates, we obtain a surprisingly
good description of the transition which compares favorably with the outcome of
Monte Carlo simulations. This provides one of the first analytical attempts to
deal with the broadly studied DP2 universality class.Comment: 4 Figures. 9 Pages. revtex4. Some comments have been improve
