    More than just a chat: Bringing service user involvement to an online community practice

    The Department of Health (DH) advocates communities of practice (CoPs) as a key vehicle for delivering service transformation (DH, 2011). In 2012, a health visitors' online community of practice (Kendall and Ikioda, 2014) extended the concept through a web-supported platform. A recent development involved a closed Facebook group to bring a group of health visitors and service users together through a series of online ‘chats’, aimed at learning more about the service user perspective of receiving an evidence-based service. This article explores the experience of service user involvement in the interpretation of research-based practice, drawing on the narratives of both groups, and considers the impact this could have on service deliver

The definitive version was published in Molecular Biology of the Cell 19 (2008): 4319-4327, doi:10.1091/mbc.E08-05-0470.During intraflagellar transport (IFT), the regulation of motor proteins, the loading and unloading of cargo and the turnover of flagellar proteins all occur at the flagellar tip. To begin an analysis of the protein composition of the flagellar tip, we used difference gel electrophoresis to compare long versus short (i.e., regenerating) flagella. The concentration of tip proteins should be higher relative to that of tubulin (which is constant per unit length of the flagellum) in short compared with long flagella. One protein we have identified is the cobalamin-independent form of methionine synthase (MetE). Antibodies to MetE label flagella in a punctate pattern reminiscent of IFT particle staining, and immunoblot analysis reveals that the amount of MetE in flagella is low in full-length flagella, increased in regenerating flagella, and highest in resorbing flagella. Four methylated proteins have been identified in resorbing flagella, using antibodies specific for asymmetrically dimethylated arginine residues. These proteins are found almost exclusively in the axonemal fraction, and the methylated forms of these proteins are essentially absent in full-length and regenerating flagella. Because most cells resorb cilia/flagella before cell division, these data indicate a link between flagellar protein methylation and progression through the cell cycle.This work was supported by National Institutes of Health Grant DK071720 (R.D.S.) and National Science Foundation Grant MCB 0418877 (R.D.S.)

    Status of the TRIUMF annular chamber for the tracking and identification of charged particles (TACTIC)

    TACTIC (TACTIC web site: http://tactic.triumf.ca) is a new detector for low-energy nuclear reactions currently under development at TRIUMF. The cylindrical ionization chamber allows three-dimensional reconstruction of particle tracks by means of a two-dimensional anode array combined with a TOF measurement of the drift electrons. In addition, the integrated charge for each pulse provides information about the energy loss of the particle and therefore allows a better identification of the nuclear species producing the track. The geometry of TACTIC covers a large angular range permitting the measurement of differential cross-sections over a large solid angle. It will be ideal for investigations of nuclear processes pertinent to the field of nuclear astrophysics

    Direct measurement of the 18F(p,alpha)15O reaction for application to nova gamma-ray emission

    International audienceThe 18F nucleus is one of the radioactive isotopes produced during nova explosions. It is of particular interest since it is mainly responsible for the 511 keV gamma-ray emission of novae that could be detected with the INTEGRAL satellite or future gamma-ray telescopes. The amount of 18F synthesised still suffers from large uncertainties coming from missing nuclear information concerning the 18F destruction reaction 18F(p,a)15O. In particular, the interference sign between three 3/2+ resonances in 19Ne, situated slightly above the proton threshold (8 keV and/or 38 keV) and at higher energy (665 keV), is unknown. The maximum effect of these interferences is lying in the energy range corresponding to the Gamow peak region and has a strong impact on the 18F(p,a)15O reaction rate. We report here on the direct measurement at low energy (down to 400 keV in the center-of-mass) of the 18F(p,a)15O total cross section that we performed at the Louvain-la-Neuve CRC-RIB facility with the high-intensity and -purity 18F radioactive beam (T1/2 = 110 min). The total cross section for the different incident energies will be presented and compared to previous experimental data
