    RÉSUMÉ : RĂ©duire les effets des actions de la sociĂ©tĂ© sur l’environnement apparaĂźt pour la majoritĂ© de la communautĂ© scientifique comme indispensable. Pour ce faire, il est nĂ©cessaire de faire le lien entre ces actions et leurs impacts environnementaux potentiels afin de permettre aux consommateurs et aux dĂ©cideurs de choisir parmi les meilleures solutions implĂ©mentables. Plusieurs outils permettent d’effectuer ces Ă©tudes. Parmi ces outils, les Analyses du Cycle de Vie (ACV) et les Analyses Input-Output (AIO) font partie des plus gĂ©nĂ©ralement utilisĂ©s. Le premier permet d’étudier de maniĂšre dĂ©taillĂ©e des produits ou des services spĂ©cifiques alors que le second se base sur des donnĂ©es Ă©conomiques et est plus adaptĂ© Ă  des analyses Ă  grande Ă©chelle. Chacune de ces mĂ©thodes possĂšde des avantages et des inconvĂ©nients mais elles souffrent toutes les deux de problĂšmes de troncature. Ces troncatures sont cependant diffĂ©rentes et complĂ©mentaires.----------ABSTRACT : For most of the scientific community, reducing the environmental effects caused by the society’s actions is essential. In order to help consumers and decision makers choose the best of several implementable solutions to protect the environment, a link must be made between society’s actions and their potential associated environmental impacts. Up to now, these studies are performed using several tools. Among those, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Input-Output Analysis (IOA) are two of the most used ones. On the one hand, LCA allows detailed studies regarding specific products and services. On the other hand, IOA is based upon economic data and used for large scaled analysis. Both have several assets and drawbacks but are affected by the same issue: data truncation. However, these truncations are not the same but complementary

    Strain Relaxation in Core-Shell Pt-Co Catalyst Nanoparticles

    Surface strain plays a key role in enhancing the activity of Pt-alloy nanoparticle oxygen reduction catalysts. However, the details of strain effects in real fuel cell catalysts are not well-understood, in part due to a lack of strain characterization techniques that are suitable for complex supported nanoparticle catalysts. This work investigates these effects using strain mapping with nanobeam electron diffraction and a continuum elastic model of strain in simple core-shell particles. We find that surface strain is relaxed both by lattice defects at the core-shell interface and by relaxation across particle shells caused by Poisson expansion in the spherical geometry. The continuum elastic model finds that in the absence of lattice dislocations, geometric relaxation results in a surface strain that scales with the average composition of the particle, regardless of the shell thickness. We investigate the impact of these strain effects on catalytic activity for a series of Pt-Co catalysts treated to vary their shell thickness and core-shell lattice mismatch. For catalysts with the thinnest shells, the activity is consistent with an Arrhenius dependence on the surface strain expected for coherent strain in dislocation-free particles, while catalysts with thicker shells showed greater activity losses indicating strain relaxation caused by dislocations as well.Comment: 23 pages,7 figures, includes appendi

    The assessment of usability of electronic shopping: A heuristic evaluation

    Today there are thousands of electronic shops accessible via the Web. Some provide user-friendly features whilst others seem not to consider usability factors at all. Yet, it is critical that the electronic shopping interface is user-friendly so as to help users to obtain their desired results. This study applied heuristic evaluation to examine the usability of current electronic shopping. In particular, it focused on four UK-based supermarkets offering electronic services: including ASDA, Iceland, Sainsbury, and Tesco. The evaluation consists of two stages: a free-flow inspection and a task-based inspection. The results indicate that the most significant and common usability problems have been found to lie within the areas of ‘User Control and Freedom’ and ‘Help and Documentation’. The findings of this study are applied to develop a set of usability guidelines to support the future design of effective interfaces for electronic shopping

    Real-time imaging of activation and degradation of carbon supported octahedral Pt–Ni alloy fuel cell catalysts at the nanoscale using in situ electrochemical liquid cell STEM

    Octahedrally shaped Pt–Ni alloy nanoparticles on carbon supports have demonstrated unprecedented electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), sparking interest as catalysts for low-temperature fuel cell cathodes. However, deterioration of the octahedral shape that gives the catalyst its superior activity currently prohibits the use of shaped catalysts in fuel cell devices, while the structural dynamics of the overall catalyst degradation are largely unknown. We investigate the time-resolved degradation pathways of such a Pt–Ni alloy catalyst supported on carbon during cycling and startup/shutdown conditions using an in situ STEM electrochemical liquid cell, which allows us to track changes happening over seconds. Thereby we can precisely correlate the applied electrochemical potential with the microstructural response of the catalyst. We observe changes of the nanocatalysts’ structure, monitor particle motion and coalescence at potentials that corrode carbon, and investigate the dissolution and redeposition processes of the nanocatalyst under working conditions. Carbon support motion, particle motion, and particle coalescence were observed as the main microstructural responses to potential cycling and holds in regimes where carbon corrosion happens. Catalyst motion happened more severely during high potential holds and sudden potential changes than during cyclic potential sweeps, despite carbon corrosion happening during both, as suggested by ex situ DEMS results. During an extremely high potential excursion, the shaped nanoparticles became mobile on the carbon support and agglomerated facet-to-facet within 10 seconds. These experiments suggest that startup/shutdown potential treatments may cause catalyst coarsening on a much shorter time scale than full collapse of the carbon support. Additionally, the varying degrees of attachment of particles on the carbon support indicates that there is a distribution of interaction strengths, which in the future should be optimized for shaped particles. We further track the dissolution of Ni nanoparticles and determine the dissolution rate as a function of time for an individual nanoparticle – which occurs over the course of a few potential cycles for each particle. This study provides new visual understanding of the fundamental structural dynamics of nanocatalysts during fuel cell operation and highlights the need for better catalyst-support anchoring and morphology for allowing these highly active shaped catalysts to become useful in PEM fuel cell applications.TU Berlin, Open-Access-Mittel - 201

    Extending Color Psychology to the Personality Realm: Interpersonal Hostility Varies by Red Preferences and Perceptual Biases

    The color psychology literature has made a convincing case that color is not just about aesthetics, but also about meaning. This work has involved situational manipulations of color, rendering it uncertain as to whether color-meaning associations can be used to characterize how people differ from each other. The present research focuses on the idea that the color red is linked to, or associated with, individual differences in interpersonal hostility. Across four studies (N = 376 undergraduates), red preferences and perceptual biases were measured along with individual differences in interpersonal hostility. It was found that (a) a preference for the color red was higher as interpersonal hostility increased, (b) hostile people were biased to see the color red more frequently than nonhostile people, and (c) there was a relationship between a preference for the color red and hostile social decision making. These studies represent an important extension of the color psychology literature, highlighting the need to attend to person-based, as well as situation-based, factors

    Correcting remaining truncations in hybrid life cycle assessment database compilation

    Hybrid life cycle assessment (HLCA) strives to combine process‐based life cycle assessment (PLCA) and environmentally extended input–output (EEIO) analysis to bridge gaps of both methodologies. The recent development of HLCA databases constitutes a major step forward in achieving complete system coverage. Nevertheless, current applications of HLCA still suffer from issues related to incompleteness of the inventory and data gaps: (1) hybridization without endogenizing the capital inputs of the EEIO database leads to underestimations, (2) the unreliability of price data hinders the application of streamlined HLCA for processes in some sectors, and (3) the sparse coverage of pollutants in multiregional EEIO databases limits the application of HLCA to a handful of impact categories. This paper aims at offering a methodology for tackling these issues in a streamlined manner and visualizing their effects on impact scores across an entire PLCA database and multiple impact categories. Data reconciliation algorithms are demonstrated on the PLCA database ecoinvent3.5 and the multiregional EEIO database EXIOBASE3. Instead of performing hybridization solely with annual product requirements, this hybridization approach incorporates endogenized capital requirements, demonstrates a novel hybridization methodology to bypass issues of price unavailability, estimates new pollutants to EXIOBASE3 environmental extensions, and thus yields improved inventories characterized in terms of 13 impact categories from the IMPACT World+ methodology. The effect of hybridization on the impact score of each process of ecoinvent3.5 varied from a few percentages to three‐fold increases, depending on the impact category and the process studied, displaying in which cases hybridization should be prioritized.     Catastrophizing mediates the relationship between the personal belief in a just world and pain outcomes among chronic pain support group attendees

    Health-related research suggests the belief in a just world can act as a personal resource that protects against the adverse effects of pain and illness. However, currently, little is known about how this belief, particularly in relation to one’s own life, might influence pain. Consistent with the suggestions of previous research, the present study undertook a secondary data analysis to investigate pain catastrophizing as a mediator of the relationship between the personal just world belief and chronic pain outcomes in a sample of chronic pain support group attendees. Partially supporting the hypotheses, catastrophizing was negatively correlated with the personal just world belief and mediated the relationship between this belief and pain and disability, but not distress. Suggestions for future research and intervention development are made
