    Estimating healthcare demand for an aging population: a flexible and robust bayesian joint model

    In this paper, we analyse two frequently used measures of the demand for health care, namely hospital visits and out-of-pocket health care expenditure, which have been analysed separately in the existing literature. Given that these two measures of healthcare demand are highly likely to be closely correlated, we propose a framework to jointly model hospital visits and out-of-pocket medical expenditure. Furthermore, the joint framework allows for the presence of non-linear effects of covariates using splines to capture the effects of aging on healthcare demand. Sample heterogeneity is modelled robustly with the random effects following Dirichlet process priors with explicit cross-part correlation. The findings of our empirical analysis of the U.S. Health and Retirement Survey indicate that the demand for healthcare varies with age and gender and exhibits significant cross-part correlation that provides a rich understanding of how aging affects health care demand, which is of particular policy relevance in the context of an aging population

    Dynamics of unbinding of polymers in a random medium

    We have studied the aging effect on the dynamics of unbinding of a double stranded directed polymer in a random medium. By using the Monte Carlo dynamics of a lattice model in two dimensions, for which disorder is known to be relevant, the unbinding dynamics is studied by allowing the bound polymer to relax in the random medium for a waiting time and then allowing the two strands to unbind. The subsequent dynamics is formulated in terms of the overlap of the two strands and also the overlap of each polymer with the configuration at the start of the unbinding process.     UDP-glucose 4-epimerase from Saccharomyces fragilis was inactivated by the arginine-specific reagents phenylglyoxal, 1,2-cyclohexanedione, and 2,3-butanedione following pseudo first order reaction kinetics. The reaction order with respect to phenylglyoxal was 1.8 and that with respect to the other two diones was close to unity. Protection afforded by substrate and competitive inhibitors against inactivation by phenylglyoxal and the reduced interaction of 1-anilinonaphthalene 8-sulfonic acid, a fluorescent probe for the substrate-binding region after phenylglyoxal modification, suggested the presence of an essential arginine residue at the substrate-binding region. Experiments with [7-14C]phenylglyoxal in the presence of UMP, a ligand known to interact at the substrate-binding region, showed that only the arginine residue at the active site could be modified by phenylglyoxal. The characteristic coenzyme fluorescence of the yeast enzyme was found to be enhanced three times in phenylglyoxal-inactivated enzyme suggesting the incorporation of the phenyl ring near the pyridine moiety of NAD

    Finite Size Correction In A Disordered System - A New Divergence

    We show that the amplitude of the finite size correction term for the nnth moment of the partition function, for randomly interacting directed polymers, diverges (on the high temperature side) as (ncn)r(n_c - n)^{-r}, as a critical moment ncn_c is approached. The exponent rr is independent of temperature but does depend on the effective dimensionality.     Phase-plane analysis of driven multi-lane exclusion models

    We show how a fixed point based boundary-layer analysis technique can be used to obtain the steady-state particle density profiles of driven exclusion processes on two-lane systems with open boundaries. We have considered two distinct two-lane systems. In the first, particles hop on the lanes in one direction obeying exclusion principle and there is no exchange of particles between the lanes. The hopping on one lane is affected by the particle occupancies on the other, which thereby introduces an indirect interaction among the lanes. Through a phase plane analysis of the boundary layer equation, we show why the bulk density undergoes a sharp change as the interaction between the lanes is increased. The second system involves one lane with driven exclusion process and the other with biased diffusion of particles. In contrast to the previous model, here there is a direct interaction between the lanes due to particle exchange between them. In this model, we have looked at two possible scenarios with constant (flat) and non-constant bulk profiles. The fixed point based boundary layer method provides a new perspective on several aspects including those related to maximal/minimal current phases, possibilities of shocks under very restricted boundary conditions for the flat profile but over a wide range of boundary conditions for the non-constant profile.Comment: 13 pages, 17 figure

    We propose a phenomenological equation to describe kinetic roughening of a growing surface in presence of long range interactions. The roughness of the evolving surface depends on the long range feature, and several distinct scenarios of phase transitions are possible.     Scaling of fluctuation for Directed polymers with random interaction

    Using a finite size scaling form for reunion probability, we show numerically the existence of a binding-unbinding transition for Directed polymers with random interaction. The cases studied are (A1) two chains in 1+1 dimensions, (A2) two chains in 2+1 dimensions and (B) three chains in 1+1 dimensions. A similar finite size scaling form for fluctuation establishes a disorder induced transition with identical exponents for cases A2 and B.     Nonequilibrium tricriticality in one dimension

    We show the existence of a nonequilibrium tricritical point induced by a repulsive interaction in one dimensional asymmetric exclusion process. The tricritical point is associated with the particle-hole symmetry breaking introduced by the repulsion. The phase diagram and the crossover in the neighbourhood of the tricritical point for the shock formation at one of the boundaries are determined.Comment: 6 pages; 4 figure
