On the tau-functions of the Degasperis-Procesi equation
The DP equation is investigated from the point of view of
determinant-pfaffian identities. The reciprocal link between the
Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equation and the pseudo 3-reduction of the
two-dimensional Toda system is used to construct the N-soliton solution of the
DP equation. The N-soliton solution of the DP equation is presented in the form
of pfaffian through a hodograph (reciprocal) transformation. The bilinear
equations, the identities between determinants and pfaffians, and the
-functions of the DP equation are obtained from the pseudo 3-reduction of
the two-dimensional Toda system.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures, Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and

Identification of the Beutler-Fano formula in eigenphase shifts and eigentime delays near a resonance
Eigenphase shifts and eigentime delays near a resonance for a system of one
discrete state and two continua are shown to be functionals of the Beutler-
Fano formulas using appropriate dimensionless energy units and line profile
indices. Parameters responsible for the avoided crossing of eigenphase shifts
and eigentime delays are identified. Similarly, parameters responsible for the
eigentime delays due to a frame change are identified. With the help of new
parameters, an analogy with the spin model is pursued for the S matrix and time
delay matrix. The time delay matrix is shown to comprise three terms, one due
to resonance, one due to a avoided crossing interaction, and one due to a frame
change. It is found that the squared sum of time delays due to the avoided
crossing interaction and frame change is unity.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, RevTe
Radon backgrounds in the DEAP-1 liquid-argon-based Dark Matter detector
The DEAP-1 \SI{7}{kg} single phase liquid argon scintillation detector was
operated underground at SNOLAB in order to test the techniques and measure the
backgrounds inherent to single phase detection, in support of the
\mbox{DEAP-3600} Dark Matter detector. Backgrounds in DEAP are controlled
through material selection, construction techniques, pulse shape discrimination
and event reconstruction. This report details the analysis of background events
observed in three iterations of the DEAP-1 detector, and the measures taken to
reduce them.
The Rn decay rate in the liquid argon was measured to be between 16
and \SI{26}{\micro\becquerel\per\kilogram}. We found that the background
spectrum near the region of interest for Dark Matter detection in the DEAP-1
detector can be described considering events from three sources: radon
daughters decaying on the surface of the active volume, the expected rate of
electromagnetic events misidentified as nuclear recoils due to inefficiencies
in the pulse shape discrimination, and leakage of events from outside the
fiducial volume due to imperfect position reconstruction. These backgrounds
statistically account for all observed events, and they will be strongly
reduced in the DEAP-3600 detector due to its higher light yield and simpler
geometry
Improving Photoelectron Counting and Particle Identification in Scintillation Detectors with Bayesian Techniques
Many current and future dark matter and neutrino detectors are designed to
measure scintillation light with a large array of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs).
The energy resolution and particle identification capabilities of these
detectors depend in part on the ability to accurately identify individual
photoelectrons in PMT waveforms despite large variability in pulse amplitudes
and pulse pileup. We describe a Bayesian technique that can identify the times
of individual photoelectrons in a sampled PMT waveform without deconvolution,
even when pileup is present. To demonstrate the technique, we apply it to the
general problem of particle identification in single-phase liquid argon dark
matter detectors. Using the output of the Bayesian photoelectron counting
algorithm described in this paper, we construct several test statistics for
rejection of backgrounds for dark matter searches in argon. Compared to simpler
methods based on either observed charge or peak finding, the photoelectron
counting technique improves both energy resolution and particle identification
of low energy events in calibration data from the DEAP-1 detector and
simulation of the larger MiniCLEAN dark matter detector.Comment: 16 pages, 16 figure
Measurement of the scintillation time spectra and pulse-shape discrimination of low-energy beta and nuclear recoils in liquid argon with DEAP-1
The DEAP-1 low-background liquid argon detector was used to measure
scintillation pulse shapes of electron and nuclear recoil events and to
demonstrate the feasibility of pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) down to an
electron-equivalent energy of 20 keV.
In the surface dataset using a triple-coincidence tag we found the fraction
of beta events that are misidentified as nuclear recoils to be (90% C.L.) for energies between 43-86 keVee and for a nuclear recoil
acceptance of at least 90%, with 4% systematic uncertainty on the absolute
energy scale. The discrimination measurement on surface was limited by nuclear
recoils induced by cosmic-ray generated neutrons. This was improved by moving
the detector to the SNOLAB underground laboratory, where the reduced background
rate allowed the same measurement with only a double-coincidence tag.
The combined data set contains events. One of those, in the
underground data set, is in the nuclear-recoil region of interest. Taking into
account the expected background of 0.48 events coming from random pileup, the
resulting upper limit on the electronic recoil contamination is
(90% C.L.) between 44-89 keVee and for a nuclear recoil
acceptance of at least 90%, with 6% systematic uncertainty on the absolute
energy scale.
We developed a general mathematical framework to describe PSD parameter
distributions and used it to build an analytical model of the distributions
observed in DEAP-1. Using this model, we project a misidentification fraction
of approx. for an electron-equivalent energy threshold of 15 keV for
a detector with 8 PE/keVee light yield. This reduction enables a search for
spin-independent scattering of WIMPs from 1000 kg of liquid argon with a
WIMP-nucleon cross-section sensitivity of cm, assuming
negligible contribution from nuclear recoil backgrounds.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physic
Professional judgement and decision-making in the planning process of high-level adventure sports coaching practice
This investigation examined the planning and decision-making processes in adventure sports coaching. We utilised a thematic analysis approach to investigate the planning decision-making practices of a sample of high-level adventure sports coaches over a series of sessions. The investigation discovered that, in planning coaching activity, high-level adventure sports coaches draw on their epistemological values and domain-specific expertise, employ a synergy of classic and naturalistic decision-making processes, and continually audit the evolving coaching process. Based on these findings, implications for professional training, accreditation and development of adventure sports coaches are presented
Prison officer self-legitimacy and support for rehabilitation in Ghana
Legitimacy refers to the moral recognition of power, and prison legitimacy remains a principal issue for prison researchers and managers. However, the prison legitimacy literature tends to focus on the views held by individuals in custody. Research on prison officer Self-Legitimacy – that is, the powerholders’ belief that the authority vested in them is morally right – remains scanty. Drawing on data from a survey of 1,062 prison officers in Ghana, this study examined both the correlates of prison officer Self-Legitimacy and the links between Self-Legitimacy and Support for Rehabilitation of individuals in custody. The results of multivariate analyses showed that having good Relations with Colleagues and being treated fairly by supervisors enhance prison officers’ Self-Legitimacy. In turn, Self-Legitimacy was found to increase officers’ Support for Rehabilitation. Finally, perceived Fair Treatment by Supervisors and positive Relations with Individuals in Custody were associated with increased Support for Rehabilitation. The implications of these findings are discussed
Entanglement in Many-Body Systems
The recent interest in aspects common to quantum information and condensed
matter has prompted a prosperous activity at the border of these disciplines
that were far distant until few years ago. Numerous interesting questions have
been addressed so far. Here we review an important part of this field, the
properties of the entanglement in many-body systems. We discuss the zero and
finite temperature properties of entanglement in interacting spin, fermionic
and bosonic model systems. Both bipartite and multipartite entanglement will be
considered. At equilibrium we emphasize on how entanglement is connected to the
phase diagram of the underlying model. The behavior of entanglement can be
related, via certain witnesses, to thermodynamic quantities thus offering
interesting possibilities for an experimental test. Out of equilibrium we
discuss how to generate and manipulate entangled states by means of many-body
Hamiltonians.Comment: 61 pages, 29 figure
Role of Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide in Bone Repair after Cyclic Fatigue Loading
Calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) is a neuropeptide that is abundant in the sensory neurons which innervate bone. The effects of CGRP on isolated bone cells have been widely studied, and CGRP is currently considered to be an osteoanabolic peptide that has effects on both osteoclasts and osteoblasts. However, relatively little is known about the physiological role of CGRP in-vivo in the skeletal responses to bone loading, particularly fatigue loading. We used the rat ulna end-loading model to induce fatigue damage in the ulna unilaterally during cyclic loading. We postulated that CGRP would influence skeletal responses to cyclic fatigue loading. Rats were fatigue loaded and groups of rats were infused systemically with 0.9% saline, CGRP, or the receptor antagonist, CGRP(8-37), for a 10 day study period. Ten days after fatigue loading, bone and serum CGRP concentrations, serum tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRAP5b) concentrations, and fatigue-induced skeletal responses were quantified. We found that cyclic fatigue loading led to increased CGRP concentrations in both loaded and contralateral ulnae. Administration of CGRP(8-37) was associated with increased targeted remodeling in the fatigue-loaded ulna. Administration of CGRP or CGRP(8-37) both increased reparative bone formation over the study period. Plasma concentration of TRAP5b was not significantly influenced by either CGRP or CGRP(8-37) administration.CGRP signaling modulates targeted remodeling of microdamage and reparative new bone formation after bone fatigue, and may be part of a neuronal signaling pathway which has regulatory effects on load-induced repair responses within the skeleton
