In the global world nowadays, diesel is widely use with the high demand for fuel in automotive and burner system. Diesel fuel release harmful gases to the surrounding when it been use. Therefore, various study has been done for controlling the levels of harmful gas emission and air pollutants. Fractal grid is the component located in rapid mixing injector that can improve the formation of a mixture on fuel and air in the combustion process. Fractal grid also can increase the length of penetration achieve high combustion velocity in the combustion process and reduce emission. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of fractal grid towards spray characteristic and mixture of fuel and air in burner system. Schlieren method will be used to capture image of spray which the spray characteristic such as spray tip penetration, spray angle and spray area to be analyzed. Spray image will be compared with different groups of images that have been taken. The air to fuel ratio is good combination to the fractal grid which it can provide good spray behavior and reduce emission. This experiment will be used three types of fractal grid with different geometry. The experiment also uses diesel and biodiesel (B5, B10, B15) with addition of water content (W0, W5, W10, W15). This study found that the increase in the equivalent ratio made the long spray penetration and wide spray while the spray angle is smaller. Lastly, fractal grid is turbulence generator for the mixture of diesel-air for reduce emission

    Get PDF
Purpose: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used for the treatment of many joint disorders, inflammation and to control pain. Numerous reports have indicated that NSAIDs are capable of producing nephrotoxicity in human. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate mefenamic acid, a NSAID nephrotoxicity in an animal model. Methods: Mice were dosed intraperitoneally with mefenamic acid either as a single dose (100 or 200 mg/kg in 10% Dimethyl sulfoxide/Palm oil) or as single daily doses for 14 days (50 or 100 mg/kg in 10% Dimethyl sulfoxide/Palm oil per day). Venous blood samples from mice during the dosing period were taken prior to and 14 days post-dosing from cardiac puncture into heparinized vials. Plasma blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine activities were measured. Results: Single dose of mefenamic acid induced mild alteration of kidney histology mainly mild glomerular necrosis and tubular atrophy. Interestingly, chronic doses induced a dose dependent glomerular necrosis, massive degeneration, inflammation and tubular atrophy. Plasma blood urea nitrogen was statistically elevated in mice treated with mefenamic acid for 14 days similar to plasma creatinine. Conclusion: Results from this study suggest that mefenamic acid as with other NSAIDs capable of producing nephrotoxicity. Therefore, the study of the exact mechanism of mefenamic acid induced severe nephrotoxicity can be done in this animal model

Voltage instability analysis in electric power system is one of the most important factors in order to maintain the equilibrium of the power system. A power system is said to be unstable if the system is not able to maintain the voltage at all buses in the system remain unchanged after the system is being subjected to a disturbance. The research work presented in this paper is about the analysis of voltage instability of electric power system by using voltage stability margin (VSM), load real power (P) margin, reactive power (Q) margin, reactive power-voltage (QV) and real power-voltage (PV) modal analysis. IEEE 30-bus system has been chosen as the power system. The load flow analysis are simulated by using Power World Simulator software version 16. Both QV and PV modal analysis were done by using MATLAB application software

Effective Building Surveying Using Laser Scanning for Heritage Building Documentation

    Get PDF
In conservation works, a thorough pathology survey is required to identify building defects. Early detection of defects can prevent the increase in cost during conservation works. Conventionally, common defects that occur in heritage buildings can be observed and recorded during a walk-by inspection; however, the process is often time consuming. Furthermore, all recorded defects require a precise but conventional data collection to identify, test, and observe the level of defects. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of manual walk-in building condition assessment with the point cloud data analysis that utilises the Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology. A building condition assessment was conducted involving the Ipoh Town Hall and Post Office, Galeri Kraftangan Seremban, and Bangunan Dato’ Jaafar in Johor Bahru using both conventional walk-in survey and the laser scanning process. This study concludes that combining digital tools with the traditional methods promotes a more accurate and effective assessment for heritage building assessment, which is crucial for ensuring the sustainability of historic structures. Additionally, 3D point cloud data allows the exploration of building deterioration from a wider perspective

Convergence Study for Rock Unconfined Compression Test Using Discrete Element Method

    Get PDF
Mesh convergence is a vital issue that needs to be addressed in a numerical model. This study investigated the effects of mesh element number on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to granite rock response under compression loading. This study used the 3D finite-element code LS-DYNA to model the Unconfined Compression Test (UCT) numerical simulation. Models with five different mesh types were conducted for convergence mesh, namely normal mesh, fine mesh, super fine mesh, coarse mesh, and super coarse mesh. The mesh convergence of rock media has been conducted using DEM and steel plates simulated using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The DEM-FEM numerical analysis is compared with the results obtained from the experimental test. The best mesh was obtained as the simulation could reproduce the stress-strain curve trends, the failure behaviour and compression strength observed in the experimental test. The normal mesh was selected as the best mesh type in this study based on the comparisons that have been made. This study shows that the DEM-FEM numerical simulation can represent granite rock and can be used for further study based on mesh convergence

Expression of segment a of infectious bursal disease virus in pichia pastoris

    Get PDF
Recombinant plasmid containing segment A open reading frame 2 (ORF2) gene of infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) of a very virulent subtype from local outbreak (strain 3529/92) was constructed. The gene encoding the IBDV structural polyprotein (N-VP2-VP3-VP4-C) was inserted into an expression vector, pPICZ prior to its transformation into Pichia pastoris by electroporation. After the induction of P. pastoris transformant with 0.5% methanol, the production of IBDV polyprotein was observed using Western blot. In P. pastoris, co- or post-translational processing of the large polyprotein occurred, generating a stable C-terminal product (VP3) of correct size, but without any detectable N-terminal product (VP2). The failure to observe the VP2 protein in Western blot analysis was probably due to the conformational epitope problem
