Monitoring urban growth and land use land cover change in Al Ain, UAE using remote sensing and GIS techniques
Urbanization and industrialization cause a serious land degradation problem, including an increased pressure on natural resources such as deforestation, rise in temperature and management of water resources. The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effects of urbanization are widely acknowledged. Increase of impervious surface is a surrogate measure of urbanization and their effects on local hydrology is well reported in literature. This study investigates the spatial-temporal dynamics of land use and land cover changes in Al Ain, UAE, from 2006 to 2016. The Landsat images of two different periods, i.e., Landsat ETM of 2006 and Landsat 8 for 2016 were acquired from earth explorer site. Semi-supervised known as the hybrid classification method was used for image classification. The change detection was carried out through post-classification techniques. The study area was categorized into five major classes. These are agriculture, gardens, urban, sandy areas and mixed urban/sandy areas. It was observed that agricultural and urban land increases from 42,560 ha to 45,950 ha (8%) and 8150 ha to 9105 ha (12%), respectively. Consequently, the natural sandy area was reduced. It was also found that the urban area was expanded dramatically in the west and southwest directions. The outcomes of this study would help concerning authorities for a sustainable land and water resources management in the Al Ain region
A Rare Case of Foreign Body Ingestion, Mimicking as Mesenteric Cyst. "Case Report"
Background: Foreign body ingestion by children is a commonly encountered problem and accounts for a significant emergency visits among pediatric population. Although these ingested foreign bodies pass spontaneously and uneventfully, a subset of such bodies may become trapped in the digestive tract, eventually leading to significant injury. Most of these bodies are radio-opaque and detectable radiologically, but some radio-lucent may become a diagnostic dilemma and subtle management issue.
Case Report: We report a case of a one-year girl who presented after accidental ingestion of foreign body with signs and symptoms of acute intestinal obstruction. Initially we were unable to diagnose the cause, but later the radiological investigation suspected a mesenteric cyst. After failure to respond to conservative measures she underwent exploratory laparotomy, and a jelly ball was removed from the gut. The patient had uneventful post-operative recovery and was kept on follow-up for three months without any complication.
Conclusion: These patients do not respond to conservative measures and need surgery on an emergency basis. It is likely that if left untreated may have caused Intestinal perforation and irreversible shock. Radiolucent foreign bodies are difficult to diagnose and need high level of suspicion. Need of the hour is to educate the parents to be extra vigilant as “prevention is better than cure”
Hydrophilic Matrices for Oral Control Drug Delivery
Oral controlled drug delivery has gathered tremendous attention over the years due to its many advantages over conventional dosage forms. Polymer-based matrices have become an integral part of the pharmaceutical industry. Hydrophilic matrices are capable of controlling the release of drug over an extended period of time. Hydrophilic polymers, especially the hydrophilic derivatives of cellulose ethers, are frequently used for these applications. Therefore, the objective of this review is to discuss the scientific and physicochemical aspects of these polymeric systems that can affect the drug release from such formulation
Exchange Rate Misalignment in Pakistan: Evidence from Purchasing Power Parity Theory
This paper examines the validity of the purchasing power parity to evaluate whether the Pakrupee vis-à-vis the US-dollar has been overvalued since the introduction of managed floating exchange rate. The Johansen multivariate cointegration technique is applied for the period 1982Q2-2002Q4. A single cointegrating vector is identified whose coefficients conform in broad terms to the restriction implied by the PPP theory, lending support to the interpretation of the model as describing a long-run relationship. This support is reinforced by the results derived from the adjustment coefficient, which is identifies clear short-run tendency for the exchange rate to revert to the equilibrium value defined by the estimated long-run model. Furthermore, exchange rate misalignment is also calculated using the estimated long-run relationship to evaluate whether the Pak-rupee vis-à-vis the US-dollar was undervalued or overvalued since the inception of managed floating exchange rate system. Calculated misalignment shows a substantial undervaluation of the Pak-rupee vis-à-vis the US dollar.Exchange Rate, Pakistan
Interpretation of Tri (3) Provider “Bebas Itu Nyata Always on” Slogan by T He Users in English Department of Faculty of Cultural Studies at Universitas Brawijaya
Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Slogan, Tri (3) Provider This research is about the analysis of critical discourse analysis in slogan“Bebas itu nyata always on” used by Tri provider by using Fairclough model ofCDA. There are three objectives in to achieve this research, first is to find out thelexical and structural meanings of Tri provider slogan of “Bebas itu nyata alwayson”, the second one is to identify the users\u27 interpretation of Tri provider inEnglish Department at Universitas Brawijaya toward the slogan of “Bebas itunyata always on”, and the last one is identify the impact of Tri slogan “Bebas itunyata always on” toward the users in English Department at UniversitasBrawijaya. This study used a qualitative approach to analyze two data. The first datumis the slogan text “Bebas Itu Nyata Always On” used in Tri (3) provider. Thesecond one is the opinion about the product produced by the students of Englishdepartment at Universitas Brawijaya. There are two data collections, namely preresearch and whilst research. In addition the researcher also needs othersinstruments such as questionnaire and interview guide to conduct the research. In data analysis, the researcher uses two processes such as analyzing the sentence of the slogan text and analyzing the result of interviewed. The result of this research revealed that semantically the slogan has good lexical choice since it emphasizes the words Bebas, Nyata, and always on to persuade the audiences.Furthermore, sintagmaticlly the slogan consists of twosentences, the first sentence is Bebas yang diberikan Tri itu nyata and the second one is we are always on. At the level of interpretation, there are similarities between the research participants and the researcher in interpreting the slogan. Besides, slogan has less power to influence the users or researcher participants in buying a certain product. In conclusion, the power of language in advertisement is very importantsince it has the function to persuade people in buying a certain product, in fact in this research the researcher found that language has less power in influencingpeople to choose a certain product, people choose a certain product since theproduct has good quality of services. For further research, the researchersuggested for the next researcher to apply more theories in CDA such as analyzing the coherence or cohesive in the text analysis so that it will be helpful for the readers to understand more about the theory of CDA
