    Designable buried waveguides in sapphire by proton implantation

    Buried and stacked planar as well as buried single and parallel channel waveguides are fabricated in sapphire by proton implantation. Good control of the implantation parameters provides excellent confinement of the guided light in each structure. Low propagation losses are obtained in fundamental-mode, buried channel waveguides without postimplantation annealing. Choice of the implantation parameters allows one to design mode shapes with different ellipticity and/or mode asymmetry in each orthogonal direction, thus demonstrating the versatility of the fabrication method. Horizontal and vertical parallelization is demonstrated for the design of one- or two-dimensional waveguide arrays in hard crystalline materials

    Carbapenem-resistant and OXA-23-producing Acinetobacter baumannii isolates in the United Arab Emirates

    ABSTRACTFive carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates, collected from the United Arab Emirates in 2006, were investigated to identify the mechanism(s) responsible for carbapenem resistance. Genotyping was performed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and the location of the blaOXA-23 gene was determined by using the endonuclease I CeuI technique and mating-out assays. The four isolates in which the blaOXA-23 gene was located on the chromosome within a Tn2006 composite transposon were clonally related. The single nonclonally related isolate harboured the blaOXA-23 gene on a 70-kb transferable plasmid. This study provides the first description of the dissemination of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii isolates carrying Tn2006 on their chromosome. It is also the first report of OXA-23-producing A. baumannii isolates in the Middle East

    Oblique Convergence in the Himalayas of Western Nepal Deduced from Preliminary Results of GPS Measurements

    A GPS network consisting of 29 sites was installed in central and western Nepal, with measurements taken in 1995 and partial remeasurements in 1997. Data suggest 15 +/−5 mm/yr of N180° convergence between the Higher Himalayas and India, a result that is consistent with N‐S shortening across the arcuate shape of the Nepalese Himalayas and an oblique underthrusting of the Indian crust below the High Himalayas of western Nepal. A 4 +/−3 mm/year E‐W extension and deviation of the principal shortening axes are inferred east of 83°E, where Quaternary faults (Darma‐Bari Gad fault system and Thakkhola graben) delineate a crustal wedge. This wedge is located on the SE projection of the Karakorum fault and may segment the Himalayan thrust belt. The convergence between the outer belt of western Nepal and India is less than 3 mm/yr, an attenuation consistent with creep on a dislocation locked beneath the Lesser Himalayas. A preliminary model suggests that this N 120°E striking dislocation is affected by a 19 mm/yr thrust component and a 7 mm/yr right lateral component

    A different perspective on canonicity

    One of the most interesting aspects of Conceptual Structures Theory is the notion of canonicity. It is also one of the most neglected: Sowa seems to have abandoned it in the new version of the theory, and most of what has been written on canonicity focuses on the generalization hierarchy of conceptual graphs induced by the canonical formation rules. Although there is a common intuition that a graph is canonical if it is "meaningful'', the original theory is somewhat unclear about what that actually means, in particular how canonicity is related to logic. This paper argues that canonicity should be kept a first-class notion of Conceptual Structures Theory, provides a detailed analysis of work done so far, and proposes new definitions of the conformity relation and the canonical formation rules that allow a clear separation between canonicity and truth

    VFAT2: A front-end system on chip providing fast trigger information, digitized data storage and formatting for the charge sensitive readout of multi-channel silicon and gas particle detectors

    The architecture, key design parameters and results for a highly integrated front-end readout system fabricated as a single ASIC are presented. The chip (VFAT2) comprises complex analog and digital functions traditionally designed as separate components. VFAT2 contains very low noise 128 channel front-end amplification with programmable internal calibration, intelligent “fast OR” trigger building outputs, digital data tagging and storage, data formatting and data packet transmission with error protection. VFAT2 is designed to work in the demanding radiation environments posed by modern H.E.P. experiments and in particular the TOTEM experiment of the LHC. Measured results are presented demonstrating full functionality and excellent analog performance despite intensive digital activity on the same piece of silicon

    Risk factors for mortality-morbidity after emergency-urgent colorectal surgery

    Background: The aim of this study was to assess the risk factors associated with mortality and morbidity following emergency or urgent colorectal surgery. Materials and methods: All data regarding the 462 patients who underwent emergency colonic resection in our institution between November 2002 and December 2007 were prospectively entered into a computerized database. Results: The median age of patients was 73 (range 17-98)years. The most common indications for surgery were: 171 adenocarcinomas (37%), 129 complicated diverticulitis (28%), and 35 colonic ischemia (7.5%). Overall mortality and morbidity rates were 14% and 36%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, the only parameter significantly associated with postoperative mortality was blood loss >500cm3 (odds ratio (OR) = 3.33, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.63-6.82, p = 0.001). There were three parameters which correlated with postoperative morbidity: ASA score ≥3 (OR = 2.9, 95% CI 1.9-4.5, p < 0.001), colonic ischemia (OR = 3.4, 95% CI 1.4-7.7, p = 0.006), and stoma creation (OR = 2.2, 95% CI 1.4-3.4, p = 0.0003). Conclusions: The main risk factors for postoperative morbidity and mortality following emergency colorectal surgery are related to: (1) patients' ASA score, (2) colonic ischemia, and (3) perioperative bleeding. These variables should be considered in the elaboration of future scoring systems to predict outcome of emergency colorectal surger

    Imaging the spotty surface of Betelgeuse in the H band

    This paper reports on H-band interferometric observations of Betelgeuse made at the three-telescope interferometer IOTA. We image Betelgeuse and its asymmetries to understand the spatial variation of the photosphere, including its diameter, limb darkening, effective temperature, surrounding brightness, and bright (or dark) star spots. We used different theoretical simulations of the photosphere and dusty environment to model the visibility data. We made images with parametric modeling and two image reconstruction algorithms: MIRA and WISARD. We measure an average limb-darkened diameter of 44.28 +/- 0.15 mas with linear and quadratic models and a Rosseland diameter of 45.03 +/- 0.12 mas with a MARCS model. These measurements lead us to derive an updated effective temperature of 3600 +/- 66 K. We detect a fully-resolved environment to which the silicate dust shell is likely to contribute. By using two imaging reconstruction algorithms, we unveiled two bright spots on the surface of Betelgeuse. One spot has a diameter of about 11 mas and accounts for about 8.5% of the total flux. The second one is unresolved (diameter < 9 mas) with 4.5% of the total flux. Resolved images of Betelgeuse in the H band are asymmetric at the level of a few percent. The MOLsphere is not detected in this wavelength range. The amount of measured limb-darkening is in good agreement with model predictions.     A probable giant planet imaged in the Beta Pictoris disk

    Since the discovery of its dusty disk in 1984, Beta Pictoris has become the prototype of young early-type planetary systems, and there are now various indications that a massive Jovian planet is orbiting the star at ~ 10 AU. However, no planets have been detected around this star so far. Our goal was to investigate the close environment of Beta Pic, searching for planetary companion(s). Deep adaptive-optics L'-band images of Beta Pic were recorded using the NaCo instrument at the Very Large Telescope. A faint point-like signal is detected at a projected distance of ~ 8 AU from the star, within the North-East side of the dust disk. Various tests were made to rule out with a good confidence level possible instrumental or atmospheric artifacts. The probability of a foreground or background contaminant is extremely low, based in addition on the analysis of previous deep Hubble Space Telescope images. The object L'=11.2 apparent magnitude would indicate a typical temperature of ~1500 K and a mass of ~ 8 Jovian masses. If confirmed, it could explain the main morphological and dynamical peculiarities of the Beta Pic system. The present detection is unique among A-stars by the proximity of the resolved planet to its parent star.
