Neural correlates of the DemTect in Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal lobar degeneration ? A combined MRI & FDG-PET study ?
Valid screening devices are critical for an early diagnosis of dementia. The DemTect is such an internationally accepted tool. We aimed to characterize the neural networks associated with performance on the DemTect's subtests in two frequent dementia syndromes: early Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). Voxel-based group comparisons of cerebral glucose utilization (as measured by F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography) and gray matter atrophy (as measured by structural magnetic resonance imaging) were performed on data from 48 subjects with AD (n = 21), FTLD (n = 14) or subjective cognitive impairment (n = 13) as a control group. We performed group comparisons and correlation analyses between multimodal imaging data and performance on the DemTect's subtests. Group comparisons showed regional patterns consistent with previous findings for AD and FTLD. Interestingly, atrophy dominated in FTLD, whereas hypometabolism in AD. Across diagnostic groups performance on the "wordlist" subtest was positively correlated with glucose metabolism in the left temporal lobe. The "number transcoding" subtest was significantly associated with glucose metabolism in both a predominantly left lateralized frontotemporal network and a parietooccipital network including parts of the basal ganglia. Moreover, this subtest was associated with gray matter density in an extensive network including frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital areas. No significant correlates were observed for the "supermarket task" subtest. Scores on the "digit span reverse" subtest correlated with glucose metabolism in the left frontal cortex, the bilateral putamen, the head of caudate nucleus and the anterior insula. Disease-specific correlation analyses could partly verify or extend the correlates shown in the analyses across diagnostic groups. Correlates of gray matter density were found in FTLD for the "number transcoding" subtest and the "digit span reverse" subtest. Correlates of glucose metabolism were found in AD for the "wordlist" subtest and in FTLD for the "digit span reverse" subtest. Our study contributes to the understanding of the neural correlates of cognitive deficits in AD and FTLD and supports an external validation of the DemTect providing preliminary conclusions about disease-specific correlates
Diffractive photon dissociation in the saturation regime from the Good and Walker picture
Combining the QCD dipole model with the Good and Walker picture, we formulate
diffractive dissociation of a photon of virtuality Q^2 off a hadronic target,
in the kinematical regime in which Q is close to the saturation scale and much
smaller than the invariant mass of the diffracted system. We show how the
obtained formula compares to the HERA data and discuss what can be learnt from
such a phenomenology. In particular, we argue that diffractive observables in
these kinematics provide useful pieces of information on the saturation regime
of QCD.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, revte
A QCD motivated model for soft interactions at high energies
In this paper we develop an approach to soft scattering processes at high
energies, which is based on two mechanisms: Good-Walker mechanism for low mass
diffractionand multi-Pomeron interactions for high mass diffraction. The
pricipal idea, that allows us to specify the theory for Pomeron interactions,
is that the so called soft processes occur at rather short distances
(r^2 \propto 1 /^2 \propto \alpha'_\pom \approx 0.01 GeV^{-2}), where
perturbative QCD is valid. The value of the Pomeron slope \alpha'_\pom was
obtained from the fit to experimental data. Using this theoretical approach we
suggest a model that fits all soft data in the ISR-Tevatron energy range, the
total, elastic, single and double diffractive cross sections, including
dependence of the differential elastic cross section, and the mass dependence
of single diffraction. In this model we calculate the survival probability of
diffractive Higgs production, and obtained a value for this observable, which
is smaller than 1% at the LHC energy range.Comment: 33pp,20 figures in eps file
Two parton shower background for associate W Higgs production
The estimates of the background for the associate W Higgs production, which
stems from the two parton shower production. It is about 1 - 2.5 times larger
than the signal. However, this background does not depend on the rapidity
difference between the W and the pair, while the signal peaks when
the rapidity difference is zero. The detailed calculations for the enhanced
diagrams' contribution to this process, are presented, and it is shown that the
overlapping singularities, being important theoretically, lead to a negligible
contribution for the LHC range of energiesComment: 35 pages and 10 figures in eps file
The Strange Quark Contribution to the Proton's Magnetic Moment
We report a new determination of the strange quark contribution to the
proton's magnetic form factor at a four-momentum transfer Q2 = 0.1 (GeV/c)^2
from parity-violating e-p elastic scattering. The result uses a revised
analysis of data from the SAMPLE experiment which was carried out at the
MIT-Bates Laboratory. The data are combined with a calculation of the proton's
axial form factor GAe to determine the strange form factor GMs(Q2=0.1)=0.37 +-
0.20 +- 0.26 +- 0.07. The extrapolation of GMs to its Q2=0 limit and comparison
with calculations is also discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Phys. Lett.
Nonperturbative Effects in Gluon Radiation and Photoproduction of Quark Pairs
We introduce a nonperturbative interaction for light-cone fluctuations
containing quarks and gluons. The interaction squeezes the transverse
size of these fluctuations in the photon and one does not need to simulate this
effect via effective quark masses. The strength of this interaction is fixed by
data. Data on diffractive dissociation of hadrons and photons show that the
nonperturbative interaction of gluons is much stronger. We fix the parameters
for the nonperturbative quark-gluon interaction by data for diffractive
dissociation to large masses (triple-Pomeron regime). This allows us to predict
nuclear shadowing for gluons which turns out to be not as strong as
perturbative QCD predicts. We expect a delayed onset of gluon shadowing at shadowing of quarks. Gluon shadowing turns out to be nearly scale
invariant up to virtualities due to presence of a semihard
scale characterizing the strong nonperturbative interaction of gluons. We use
the same concept to improve our description of gluon bremsstrahlung which is
related to the distribution function for a quark-gluon fluctuation and the
interaction cross section of a fluctuation with a nucleon. We expect
the nonperturbative interaction to suppress dramatically the gluon radiation at
small transverse momenta compared to perturbative calculations.Comment: 58 pages of Latex including 11 figures. Shadowing for soft gluons and

Survival probability of large rapidity gaps in QCD and N=4 SYM motivated model
In this paper we present a self consistent theoretical approach for the
calculation of the Survival Probability for central dijet production . These
calculations are performed in a model of high energy soft interactions based on
two ingredients:(i) the results of N=4 SYM, which at the moment is the only
theory that is able to deal with a large coupling constant; and (ii) the
required matching with high energy QCD. Assuming, in accordance with these
prerequisites, that soft Pomeron intercept is rather large and the slope of the
Pomeron trajectory is equal to zero, we derive analytical formulae that sum
both enhanced and semi-enhanced diagrams for elastic and diffractive
amplitudes. Using parameters obtained from a fit to the available experimental
data, we calculate the Survival Probability for central dijet production at
energies accessible at the LHC. The results presented here which include the
contribution of semi-enhanced and net diagrams, are considerably larger than
our previous estimates.Comment: 11 pages, 10 pictures in .eps file
Parity-violating Electron Deuteron Scattering and the Proton's Neutral Weak Axial Vector Form Factor
We report on a new measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in
quasielastic electron scattering from the deuteron at backward angles at Q2=
0.038 (GeV/c)2. This quantity provides a determination of the neutral weak
axial vector form factor of the nucleon, which can potentially receive large
electroweak corrections. The measured asymmetry A=-3.51 +/- 0.57(stat) +/-
0.58(sys)ppm is consistent with theoretical predictions. We also report on
updated results of the previous experiment at Q2=0.091 (GeV/c)2, which are also
consistent with theoretical predictions.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Characteristics of LPG-diesel dual fuelled engine operated with rapeseed methyl ester and gas-to-liquid diesel fuels
AbstractA Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)-diesel dual fuelled combustion experimental study was carried out to understand the impact of the properties of the direct injection diesel fuels, such as rapeseed methyl ester (RME) and gas-to-liquid (GTL), on combustion characteristics, engine performance and emissions. The experimental results showed that up to 60% of liquid fuel replacement by LPG was reached while keeping engine combustion variability within the acceptable range and obtaining clear benefits in the soot-NOx trade-off. However, the amount of LPG was limited by adverse effects in engine thermal efficiency, HC and CO emissions. LPG–RME showed a good alternative to LPG-diesel dual fuelling, as better engine combustion variability, HC, CO and soot behaviour was obtained when compared to the other liquid fuels, mainly due to its fuel oxygen content. On the other hand, NOx emissions were the highest, but these can be balanced by the application of EGR. LPG–GTL dual fuelling resulted in the highest NOx emissions benefit over a wide range of engine operating conditions. The high cetane number and the absence of aromatic of GTL are the main parameters for the more favourable soot-NOx trade-off compared to LPG–ULSD (ultra low sulphur diesel) dual fuelling
