Sustainable citizenship as a key to sustainability: Establishing a common ground on technology use in New Zealand's dairy sector

    Get PDF
Sustainability is a key issue in New Zealand’s dairy industry. Arguments are often made from either a purely economic or environmental perspective. The debate is dominated by polarised viewpoints characterised by hasty rejection or assertive support of production-focused biotechnological approaches. On the one hand is the biotechnology industry and on the other environmentalists and an anxious public. In the context of this divisive discussion, progress towards sustainable development is hard to achieve. By using the concept of sustainable citizenship as a theoretical framework, it is possible to incorporate economic, environmental, political and social approaches to sustainability. This thesis employs sustainable citizenship in order to find a common ground amongst the various points of view within the dairy sector. Shared values around farming methods and biotechnology are used to find a way to facilitate sustainable development in the industry, combining current interests of various stakeholders with the long-term interest of future generations

Corporate Tax Inversions: A Brief Overview

    Get PDF
The purpose of this report is to give a brief overview of corporate tax inversions and how policymakers are attempting to curb these efforts. The U.S. Treasury is starting to feel the effects of these inversions through decreased tax revenue as they have become more common for U.S. corporations. It is important for businesspersons to analyze this argument from both sides in order to better serve their clients. Corporations feel that an inversion is necessary in order to save money in taxes and maintain competitiveness in the global market. The government insists that corporations are taking advantage of business resources in the U.S. without paying a fair share of taxes. The data in this report was obtained through online tax research platforms, such at CCH Intelliconnect and Thomson Reuters Checkpoint. Much of the information comes from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, in the form of Internal Revenue Code and Internal Revenue Bulletins. This information has been analyzed to help corporations better prepare for new laws and regulations that expect to be released soon. Based on the data gathered, the results indicate that it will take time for the U.S. to be able to stop these inversions completely. The United States has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world, and inversions will not stop happening until this is changed. The implications of this research shows that the government still has a long way to go in revising the corporate tax code

The Censorship of German Video Games: The Effects of National Sensitivity to Violence in Entertainment Content

80 pages. A thesis presented to the Department of Art and the Clark Honors College of the University of Oregon in partial fulfillment of the requirements for degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, Spring 2015.Germany is one of the strictest censors of violence among the world’s video game consumers. Due to its history and a cohesive national opinion, the legislature limits content severely, much more severely than the surrounding European nations. This results in international developers choosing not to market to Germany, creating censored titles specifically for the German market, or finding themselves on a list of banned titles illegal to buy or sell. However, with the proliferation of online shopping and availability of international products, the banning of violent content from German video gamers is somewhat ineffective. The anti-violence measures tailored to video games become demonstrative, essentially a stance of the German government to not endorse graphic gore in gaming without taking preventative action that may violate personal rights. My thesis provides a survey of the German video game community as well as an examination of games imported to and exported from Germany in order to demonstrate the current state of the industry and to illustrate how national sensitivity to violence effects entertainment content

Evaluation of alternative surfactants as stabilizers for therapeutical protein formulations

    Get PDF
Surfactants are potent stabilizers of proteins, preventing protein unfolding and aggregation presumably by competitive adsorption to interfaces. Due to limited data on e.g. performance and safety, only three surfactants are routinely found within marketed formulations of parenteral protein products: polysorbate 20 (PS20), polysorbate 80 (PS80), or poloxamer 188 (Px188). These molecules are well-established and safe for parenteral administration but possess liabilities such as degradation of the surfactant itself and/or chemical inhomogeneity (PS) or show decreased stabilizing effects at silicone oil-water interfaces (Px188). Thus, there is a need to evaluate alternative surfactants to expand the toolbox for product development and to ensure optimal drug product stability and quality. In our studies, potential alternative surfactants were evaluated and compared to PS20 and Px188 (e.g. during real-time and stress stability studies using a model mAb). Data from these efforts will be presented

ECOG and BMI as preoperative risk factors for severe postoperative complications in ovarian cancer patients: results of a prospective study (RISC-GYN—trial)

Background: Accompanying co-morbidities in patients with ovarian cancer are of major relevance for scheduling debulking surgery, especially in the anesthesiological consultations. Aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of co-morbidities and patient characteristics on postoperative complications. Methods: Patients undergoing maximal cytoreductive surgery were prospectively enrolled from October 2015 to January 2017. Various variables were recorded, such as the Charlson comorbidity index, Eastern cooperative oncology group scale of performance status (ECOG PS) and the American society of anesthesiologists physical status classification system (ASA PS). Surgical complications were graded using the Clavien-Dindo criteria. Logistic regression models were used to analyze risk factors for severe postoperative complications. Results: Of 106 enrolled patients, 19 (17.9%) developed severe postoperative complications grade >= IIIb according to Clavien-Dindo criteria. In the multivariable regression analysis impaired (ECOG PS) > 1 (odds ratio OR) 13.34, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.74-102.30, p = 0.01), body mass index (BMI) > 25 kg/m(2) (OR 10.48, 95% CI 2.38-46.02, p = 0.002) along with the use of intraoperative norepinephrine > 0.11 mu g/kg/min (OR 4.69, 95% CI 1.13-19.46, p = 0.03) and intraoperative fresh frozen plasma (FFP) > 17 units (OR 4.11, 95% CI 1.12-15.14, p = 0.03) appeared as significant predictors of severe postoperative complications. Conclusion: We demonstrated that neither the presence of a certain comorbidity nor the summation of the co-morbidities were associated with adverse outcome. Patient characteristics, such as ECOG PS > 1 and obesity (BMI > 25 kg/m(2)), are highly predictive factors for severe postoperative complications. The analysis of intraoperative data showed that the need for more than > 0.11 mu g/kg/min of norepinephrine and transfusions of FFPs more than 17 units were strongly associated with severe postoperative complications

Attributes of Successful Graduate Students: Facilitating Self-Efficacy and Persistence

    Get PDF
Colleges and universities struggle with declining program completion rates among graduate students. While the attrition rate of graduate students declined over the last five years in the United States, the issue of graduate student persistence continues to be challenging. This study identifies and explores reported characteristics: expectations, motivation, self-discipline, emotional intelligence, and passion for learning. Graduate students studying educational leadership conducted a qualitative inquiry to approach theoretical comprehension of the intrinsic motivations, expectations, and major attributes of successful graduate students. Examining these areas provides a deeper understanding of success achieved by graduate students
