The first phase of the project started out from the idea of accessing further applications of the ceramic matrix composite (SiC/SiC) developed by the French partner SEP for use beyond space and military applications. The results obtained by the partners from material samples with regard to high-temperature behavior and the small progress in this field with protective sealings from the material manufacturer tested during this phase, together with the calculated component loads have led to the discontinuation of the project within the framework of EURECA. The risks of successfully coping with the emerged problems appeared to be too high to the material manufacturer SEP; any commercial marketing of CMC turbine components was estimated to be impossible in the short-term (2-3 years) and very difficult in the medium-term (ca. 5 years). Within the national framework, MAN Technologie, remaining in the MATFO program of the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology (BMFT), continued the work with reduced requirements for the objectives and increased portions of fundamental tasks. The project of component qualification turned into a project of material and manufacturing process development. The production and test of a prototype brake disk was provided as a sample application to demonstrate the technical possibilities and potential of this material. The objective of these analyses was to identify approaches to the purposeful technology development in the sectors of materials and structures. Within the scope of this analysis one has complied from today's point of view materials, structures, structural designs and appropriate technologies such as production and treatment processes for space vehicles. Based on their primary importance, the space environment, joining processes, damage mechanics and any effects of the materials during production, processing and application on the environment were taken into account as well. Starting from conventional rocket launchers and satellites, in particular future space transport and orbital systems such as airbreathing horizontal takeoff systems were the guideline for the selection of relevant materials and processes.
