MagicFace: Stepping into Character through an Augmented Reality Mirror

    Get PDF
Augmented Reality (AR) is coming of age and appearing in various smartphone apps. One emerging AR type uses the front-facing camera and overlays a user's face with digital features that transform the physical appearance, making the user look like someone else, such as a popstar or a historical character. However, little is known about how people react to such stepping into character and how convincing they perceive it to be. We developed an app with two Egyptian looks, MagicFace, which was situated both in an opera house and a museum. In the first setting, people were invited to use the app, while in the second setting they came across it on their own when visiting the exhibition. Our findings show marked differences in how people approach and experience the MagicFace in these different contexts. We discuss how realistic and compelling this kind of AR technology is, as well as its implications for educational and cultural settings

Low-dissipation data bus via coherent quantum dynamics

The transfer of information between two physical locations is an essential component of both classical and quantum computing. In quantum computing the transfer of information must be coherent to preserve quantum states and hence the quantum information. We establish a simple protocol for transferring one- and two-electron encoded logical qubits in quantum dot arrays. The theoretical energetic cost of this protocol is calculated - in particular, the cost of freezing and unfreezing tunneling between quantum dots. Our results are compared with the energetic cost of shuttling qubits in quantum dot arrays and transferring classical information using classical information buses. Only our protocol can manage constant dissipation for any chain length. This protocol could reduce the cooling requirements and constraints on scalable architectures for quantum dot quantum computers

Haemophilus Influenzae Serotype A Septic Arthritis – A Rare Aetiology

Effect of low level contamination on TiAl alloys studied by SIMS

    Get PDF
Titanium aluminides are a valuable alternative to superalloys in applications where the ratio resistance/density is important. Since the ordinary production routes lead to high final costs, an alternative might be the use of traditional casting techniques by induction melting of the alloy in a ceramic crucible and pouring into ceramic moulds, made by the investment casting process. However, due to the high reactivity of Ti alloys, traditional ceramic materials cannot be used, as they lead to oxide formation and oxygen pick up from both the crucible and the moulding materials. In this work, the effect of low level contaminations was studied by SIMS. Special attention was given to the oxygen concentration of samples obtained with different mould materials. The comparison of SIMS in-depth profiles with hardness profiles, give insight concerning the significance of the oxygen concentration in the properties of the alloy and regarding the choice of the most suitable materials for TiAl production

This action ends up wasting tons of liters of water every year, which translates into financial and environmental losses. To avoid these losses, we suggest early detection. To this end, we analyzed the different available neural networks available with multispectral images. This entailed training each regional and regression-based network five times with five different datasets. Networks based on two possible solutions were chosen: unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) depletion or post-processing with external software. The results show that the best network for UAV depletion is the Tiny-YOLO (You Only Look Once) version 4-type network, and the best starting weights for Mask-RCNN were from the Tiny-YOLO network version. Although no mean average precision (mAP) of over 70% was achieved, the final trained networks managed to detect mostly gaps, including low-vegetation areas and very small gaps, which had a tendency to be overlooked during the labeling stage.publishersversionpublishe

    Get PDF

    Predictive Modeling in Post-reform Marketplace

Healthcare reform changes everything. Annual and lifetime dollar limits, underwriting, and preexisting condition exclusion will all be eliminated by 2014. Insurers must offer coverage to any individual regardless of their health status. An overwhelming majority of those who will be mandated to purchase individual insurance is currently uninsured or under-insured. Insurers have insufficient internal data to estimate costs for this new population. A study on how to apply predictive modeling to deal with risks and uncertainties facing healthcare industry in the post-reform marketplace is presented in this article
