    Crystal structures of two tandem malectin-like receptor kinases involved in plant reproduction.

    Complex cell-to-cell communication between the male pollen tube and the female reproductive organs is required for plant fertilization. A family of Catharanthus roseus receptor kinase 1-like (CrRLK1L) membrane receptors has been genetically implicated in this process. Here, crystal structures of the CrRLK1Ls ANXUR1 and ANXUR2 are reported at 1.48 and 1.1 Å resolution, respectively. The structures reveal a novel arrangement of two malectin-like domains connected by a short β-hairpin linker and stabilized by calcium ions. The canonical carbohydrate-interaction surfaces of related animal and bacterial carbohydrate-binding modules are not conserved in plant CrRLK1Ls. In line with this, the binding of chemically diverse oligosaccharides to ANXUR1 and HERCULES1 could not be detected. Instead, CrRLK1Ls have evolved a protein-protein interface between their malectin domains which forms a deep cleft lined by highly conserved aromatic and polar residues. Analysis of the glycosylation patterns of different CrRLK1Ls and their oligomeric states suggests that this cleft could resemble a binding site for a ligand required for receptor activation of CrRLK1Ls

    Highly precocious activation of reproductive function in autumn-born goats (Capra hircus) by exposure to sexually active bucks

    Goats are seasonal breeders with the main cue controlling the timing of breeding season being photoperiod. Hence, the season of birth impacts puberty onset: spring-born goats reach puberty in autumn, at 7 mo of age, whereas autumn-born goats reach puberty at 1 yr during the next reproductive season. The aim of this study was to determine whether exposure of autumn-born young females to sexually active males could counteract the delay in puberty onset observed in autumn-born goats. Females exposed to sexually active males (n = 8) reached puberty earlier than isolated females (n = 8), with exposed females ovulating at a mean age of 3.5 mo. To our knowledge, such precocious puberty onset obtained through social stimulation has never been described in the literature. Moreover, those exposed females exhibited estrus behavior for most ovulations. Our results indicate that in goats born out of season, exposure to sexually active bucks is a really efficient approach to induce early puberty, suggesting that social interactions could have a crucial impact on the regulation of pubertal transition

    Impact of land-use change on the hydrology of North Lao PDR watersheds

    We investigated the impact of land-use change on the hydrology of different major Lao tributary watersheds of Mekong River. The region is the North of Laos centred on Luang Prabang and the watersheds are the Nam Khan, Nam Ou, Nam Suong, Nam Lik and Nam Ngum. An additional small agricultural catchment called Houay Pano close to the Nam Khan, is also considered. We used the lumped rainfall–runoff conceptual models GR4J and GR2M, developed by Irstea in France, the Mekong River Commission hydro-meteorological database and the Japanese Aphrodite meteorological database. The objective was to detect in the hydrological regime of the watersheds an impact of de(re)forestation, processes known to have occurred since the 1980s, but at a degree which has not been quantified. For this purpose we adopted the cross simulation methodology developed by Irstea which has proved to be efficient to detect trends in long term watershed hydrology. The results did not show any significant hydrological change since 1960. On the other hand the application of the same methodology to the small catchment Houay Pano surveyed since 2001 proved to be convincing. We saw evidence of the impact of slash and burn practice, followed by a long fallow period, on a catchment’s hydrology over a seven year period
