Weighing Elephants with Kitchen Scales. The relevance of traditional performance measurement tools for social enterprises
peer reviewedPurpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze whether the use of current performance tools is consistent with the specific features of social enterprises.
Design/methodology/approach – In a first phase, the main performance tools are divided into
strategic planning tools, reporting tools and economic optimization techniques. In a second phase, 15 criteria emerge from a literature review to characterize the specific features of social enterprises. These criteria are brought together into an analytical framework, which makes it possible to analyze the relevance of each performance tool in relation to the specific features of social enterprises.
Findings – What comes out of the analysis is that the tools globally fail to account for the specific
features of social enterprises. That none of them met more than half of the criteria suggests the need for new performance tools based on strong theoretical bases

Aménorrhée secondaire et ventriculomégalie cérébrale
peer reviewedCerebral ventriculomegaly and hydrocephalus are not frequently associated with endocrine disorders of the gonadotropic axis. The mechanism of this association is not clarified. The most probable cause is however a partial hypothalamic dysfunction. The examination of the few reported cases is in favour of this explanation. We present the case of a young woman with a cerebral ventriculomegaly and suffering from secondary amenorrhea. Shunt was not necessary from the neurological point of view, the problem of secondary amenorrhea and anovulatory infertility was solved by clomiphen citrate therapy

Aquatic insects from the Caatinga: Checklists and diversity assessments of Ubajara (Ceará State) and Sete Cidades (Piauà State) National Parks, Northeastern Brazil
Background Diversity and distribution of Neotropical aquatic insects is still poorly known, with many species to be recorded and many others to be described, due to the small number of taxonomists and sparse faunistic studies. This knowledge is especially poor in the Caatinga Domain in Northeastern Brazil, even though, this region may have played an important historical role in the spatial evolution of faunas of forested areas in northern South America.New information Aquatic insect checklists of 96 species from Parque Nacional de Ubajara (Ceará State, Brazil) and 112 species from Parque Nacional de Sete Cidades (Piauà State, Brazil) are presented, representing the following taxa: Elmidae, Epimetopidae, Hydrophilidae, and Torridincolidae (Coleoptera), Hemerodromiinae (Diptera: Empididae), Ephemeroptera, Gerromorpha and Nepomorpha (Hemiptera), Odonata, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera. Because of the scarce number of biological inventories in Northeastern Brazil, several new distributional records (of species, genera, and families) for Brazil, Northeastern Brazil, and Ceará and Piauà states are provided. In addition, several undescribed species were detected, being 26 from Ubajara and 20 from Sete Cidades. Results represent a significant increase to the known fauna of these states, ranging from 13%-70% increase for Ceará and 41% to 91% increase for PiauÃ. Although both parks are relatively close to each other and within the Caatinga domain, their aquatic fauna display a very high complementarity (89% species), possibly due to structural differences of water bodies sampled in each park. Rarefaction curves based on quantitative light trap samples suggest a much higher expected species richness of aquatic insects at Sete Cidades than at Ubajara National Park. Discussion on biogeographical affinities of this sample of the Caatinga fauna is provided. © Takiya D et al
A global overview of performance evaluation
Performance evaluation presents two specific difficulties for social enterprises. At the one hand, it is complex to define what performance is, to measure the factors impacting performance through indicators, and to sum up the scores of all the indicators. At the other hand, performance evaluation should vary with the purpose of the evaluation and the type of organization. Thus the characteristics of an ideal performance evaluation tool for social enterprises should both reflect this complexity and be contingent
Commercialization of ethical products: case studies in the fair trade and organic sectors
