    Broken-Symmetry States in Quantum Hall Superlattices

    We argue that broken-symmetry states with either spatially diagonal or spatially off-diagonal order are likely in the quantum Hall regime, for clean multiple quantum well (MQW) systems with small layer separations. We find that for MQW systems, unlike bilayers, charge order tends to be favored over spontaneous interlayer coherence. We estimate the size of the interlayer tunneling amplitude needed to stabilize superlattice Bloch minibands by comparing the variational energies of interlayer-coherent superlattice miniband states with those of states with charge order and states with no broken symmetries. We predict that when coherent miniband ground states are stable, strong interlayer electronic correlations will strongly enhance the growth-direction tunneling conductance and promote the possibility of Bloch oscillations.Comment: 9 pages LaTeX, 4 figures EPS, to be published in PR

    INTRODUCTION Several studies have measured health outcomes in the United States, but none have provided a comprehensive assessment of patterns of health by state. OBJECTIVE To use the results of the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) to report trends in the burden of diseases, injuries, and risk factors at the state level from 1990 to 2016. DESIGN AND SETTING A systematic analysis of published studies and available data sources estimates the burden of disease by age, sex, geography, and year. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Prevalence, incidence, mortality, life expectancy, healthy life expectancy (HALE), years of life lost (YLLs) due to premature mortality, years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for 333 causes and 84 risk factors with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs) were computed. RESULTS Between 1990 and 2016, overall death rates in the United States declined from 745.2 (95% UI, 740.6 to 749.8) per 100 000 persons to 578.0 (95% UI, 569.4 to 587.1) per 100 000 persons. The probability of death among adults aged 20 to 55 years declined in 31 states and Washington, DC from 1990 to 2016. In 2016, Hawaii had the highest life expectancy at birth (81.3 years) and Mississippi had the lowest (74.7 years), a 6.6-year difference. Minnesota had the highest HALE at birth (70.3 years), and West Virginia had the lowest (63.8 years), a 6.5-year difference. The leading causes of DALYs in the United States for 1990 and 2016 were ischemic heart disease and lung cancer, while the third leading cause in 1990 was low back pain, and the third leading cause in 2016 was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Opioid use disorders moved from the 11th leading cause of DALYs in 1990 to the 7th leading cause in 2016, representing a 74.5% (95% UI, 42.8% to 93.9%) change. In 2016, each of the following 6 risks individually accounted for more than 5% of risk-attributable DALYs: tobacco consumption, high body mass index (BMI), poor diet, alcohol and drug use, high fasting plasma glucose, and high blood pressure. Across all US states, the top risk factors in terms of attributable DALYs were due to 1 of the 3 following causes: tobacco consumption (32 states), high BMI (10 states), or alcohol and drug use (8 states). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE There are wide differences in the burden of disease at the state level. Specific diseases and risk factors, such as drug use disorders, high BMI, poor diet, high fasting plasma glucose level, and alcohol use disorders are increasing and warrant increased attention. These data can be used to inform national health priorities for research, clinical care, and policy

    The term vascular remodeling is commonly used to define the structural changes in blood vessel geometry that occur in response to long-term physiologic alterations in blood flow or in response to vessel wall injury brought about by trauma or underlying cardiovascular diseases.1, 2, 3, 4 The process of remodeling, which begins as an adaptive response to long-term hemodynamic alterations such as elevated shear stress or increased intravascular pressure, may eventually become maladaptive, leading to impaired vascular function. The vascular endothelium, owing to its location lining the lumen of blood vessels, plays a pivotal role in regulation of all aspects of vascular function and homeostasis.5 Thus, not surprisingly, endothelial dysfunction has been recognized as the harbinger of all major cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, and diabetes.6, 7, 8 The endothelium elaborates a variety of substances that influence vascular tone and protect the vessel wall against inflammatory cell adhesion, thrombus formation, and vascular cell proliferation.8, 9, 10 Among the primary biologic mediators emanating from the endothelium is nitric oxide (NO) and the arachidonic acid metabolite prostacyclin [prostaglandin I2 (PGI2)], which exert powerful vasodilatory, antiadhesive, and antiproliferative effects in the vessel wall

    L'étude sociologique des relations internationales

    Dans l'article on a présenté les directions et les écoles principales de la sociologie des relations internationales de l'Ouest et on a fait leur appréciation. On a distingué trois directions priçipales: 1) la direction sociologique et historique (R. Aron), qui ideotifie les relate ons entre les Etats avec les relations entre les individus ou les moindres groupes sociaux. Cependant d'après R. Aron on ne peut pas exprimer les relations entre les Etats dans les catégories des sciences mathématiques. Les recherches doivent se concentrer sur l'analyse des méchanismes qui déterminent le comportement des individus ou des groupes sociaux. On remarque dans cette direction quelques points communs avec le pluralisme et le béhaviorisme: 2) la direction psychologique (S. Freud et K. Lorenz) traitant les guerres en tant que conséquence de la nature humaine. D'après cette direction il est difficile d'éliminer les résultats destructifs du comportement des gens car ils s'appuyent sur l'instinct. Les instincts sont des traits constants des êtres vivants. Dans la partie suivante de l'article on fait la critique de ces théories. Le béhaviorisme (J. B. Watson) met sur le premier plan le comportement des individus. Grâce à l'analyse de ce comportement il arrive aux conclusions qui facilitent l'explication du comportement des sujets des relations) internationales. Le manque de liaison entre des modèles mène cependant à la partialité. Dans ces conditions l'élaboration du modèle global est irréalisable. 3) Le fonctlionalisme dans la sociologie des relations internationales a été introduit par D. M. Mitrany. Cette direction prétend à construire une théorie générale des relations internationales qui soit unique. Les difficultés dans ce domaine — mentionnées dans l'article — mènent le fonctionalisme à l'arbitraire. A la fin de l'article on souligne que dans la sociologie des relationsfcternationales seulement les recherches s'appuyant sur le marxisme sont justes. Cette discipline s'occupe des recherches des relations entre les sociétés entières, surtout entre les Etats. En comparaison avec les autres relations sociales, les relations internationales possèdent un rang particulier. Les particularités en question sont l'objet spécifique de la sociologie des relations internationales.     Investigating Trends in Atmospheric Compositions of Cool Gas Giant Planets Using Spitzer Secondary Eclipses

    We present new 3.6 and 4.5 μm secondary eclipse measurements for five cool (T 1000 K) transiting gas giant planets: HAT-P-15b, HAT-P-17b, HAT-P-18b, HAT-P-26b, and WASP-69b. We detect eclipses in at least one bandpass for all planets except HAT-P-15b. We confirm and refine the orbital eccentricity of HAT-P-17b, which is also the only planet in our sample with a known outer companion. We compare our measured eclipse depths in these two bands, which are sensitive to the relative abundances of methane versus carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, respectively, to predictions from 1D atmosphere models for each planet. For planets with hydrogen-dominated atmospheres and equilibrium temperatures cooler than ~1000 K, this ratio should vary as a function of both atmospheric metallicity and the carbon-to-oxygen ratio. For HAT-P-26b, our observations are in good agreement with the low atmospheric metallicity inferred from transmission spectroscopy. We find that all four of the planets with detected eclipses are best matched by models with relatively efficient circulation of energy to the nightside. We see no evidence for a solar-system-like correlation between planet mass and atmospheric metallicity, but instead identify a potential (1.9σ) correlation between the inferred CH4/(CO + CO2) ratio and stellar metallicity. Our ability to characterize this potential trend is limited by the relatively large uncertainties in the stellar metallicity values. Our observations provide a first look at the brightness of these planets at wavelengths accessible to the James Webb Space Telescope, which will be able to resolve individual CH4, CO, and CO2 bands and provide much stronger constraints on their atmospheric compositions
