    Petrogenetic significance of chromian spinels from the Sudbury Igneous Complex, Ontario, Canada

    Chromian spinels occur in mafic-ultramafic inclusions in the Sublayer of the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC) as well as in mafic-ultramafic rocks in the immediate footwall of the Sublayer. The host rocks are pyroxenite and melanorite with minor dunite, harzburgite, and melatroctolite. As common accessory phases in these rocks, the chromian spinels display euhedral or subhedral forms and are included in olivine and orthopyroxene. Chromian spinel grains generally have ilmenite lamellae and contain abundant inclusions (zircon, olivine, diopside, plagioclase, biotite, and sulfide). All the chromian spinels have similar trace element abundances and are rich in TiO2 (0.5-15 wt.%). They have constant Cr# (100Cr/(Cr + Al)) (55-70) and exhibit a continuum in composition that traverses the normal fields of spinels in a Al-(Fe3+ + 2Ti)-Cr triangular diagram. This continuum extends to that of the composition of chromian magnetite in the host norite matrix to the mafic -ultramafic inclusions. This continuum in composition of the spinels suggests that the noritic matrix to the Sublayer formed from the same magma as the inclusions. A positive correlation between the Cr and Al contents of the spinels was probably produced by dilution of these elements by Fe3+ contributed, perhaps, by a plagioclase-saturated melt. Zircon inclusions in a chromian spinel grain reflect incorporation of crustal, felsic materials into the magma before crystallization of chromian spinel. The chemical characteristics and mineral inclusions of the spinels suggest that the Sublayer formed in response to magma mixing. It is suggested that subsequent to the formation of the crustal melt, mantle-derived high-Mg magmas mixed vigourously with this and generated the magmatic sulfides that eventually formed the Ni - Cu - platinum-group elements sulfide ore deposits. Some of the early crystallization products of the high-Mg magma settled to the chamber floor, where they partially mixed with the crustal melt and formed the mafic - ultramafic inclusions and footwall complexes.published_or_final_versio

    Selective Deuterium Ion Acceleration Using the Vulcan PW Laser

    We report on the successful demonstration of selective acceleration of deuterium ions by target-normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) with a high-energy petawatt laser. TNSA typically produces a multi-species ion beam that originates from the intrinsic hydrocarbon and water vapor contaminants on the target surface. Using the method first developed by Morrison, et al.,1^{1} an ion beam with >>99%\% deuterium ions and peak energy 14 MeV/nucleon is produced with a 200 J, 700 fs, >1020W/cm2>10^{20} W/cm^{2} laser pulse by cryogenically freezing heavy water (D2_{2}O) vapor onto the rear surface of the target prior to the shot. Within the range of our detectors (0-8.5^{\circ}), we find laser-to-deuterium-ion energy conversion efficiency of 4.3%\% above 0.7 MeV/nucleon while a conservative estimate of the total beam gives a conversion efficiency of 9.4%\%.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Risk factors for recurrent injurious falls that require hospitalization for older adults with dementia: a population based study

    Background: Older adults with dementia are at an increased risk of falls, however, little is known about risk factors for recurrent injurious falls (a subsequent fall after the first fall has occurred) among this group. This study aimed to identify risk factors for recurrent injurious falls requiring hospitalization among adults aged 60+ years with dementia. Methods: This retrospective, whole-population cohort study was conducted using the Western Australian Hospital Morbidity Data System and Western Australian Death Registrations from 2001 to 2013. Survival analysis using a stratified conditional Cox model (type 1) was undertaken to identify risk factors for recurrent injurious falls requiring hospitalization. Results: There were 32,519 participants with an index hospital admission with dementia during the study period. Over 27 % (n = 8970) of the cohort experienced a total of 11,073 injurious falls requiring hospitalization during follow up with 7297 individuals experiencing a single fall, 1330 experiencing two falls and 343 experiencing three or more falls. The median follow-up time for each individual was 2.49 years. Females were at a significantly increased risk of 7 % for recurrent injurious falls resulting in hospitalization (adjusted hazard ratio 1.07, 95 % CI 1.01–1.12), compared to males. Increasing age, living in rural areas, and having an injurious fall in the year prior to the index hospital admission with dementia also increased the risk of recurrent injurious falls resulting in hospitalization.     Parasite Lost: Chemical and Visual Cues Used by Pseudacteon in Search of Azteca instabilis

    An undescribed species of phorid fly (genus: Pseudacteon) parasitizes the ant Azteca instabilis F Smith, by first locating these ants through the use of both chemical and visual cues. Experiments were performed in Chiapas, Mexico to examine a) the anatomical source of phorid attractants, b) the specific chemicals produced that attract phorids, and c) the nature of the visual cues used by phorids to locate the ants. We determined that phorid-attracting chemicals were present within the dorsal section of the abdomen, the location of the pygidial gland. Further experiments indicate that a pygidial gland compound, 1-acetyl-2-methylcyclopentane, is at least partially responsible for attracting phorid flies to their host. Finally, although visual cues such as movement were important for host location, size and color of objects did not influence the frequency with which phorids attacked moving targets

    Autoimmune and autoinflammatory mechanisms in uveitis

    The eye, as currently viewed, is neither immunologically ignorant nor sequestered from the systemic environment. The eye utilises distinct immunoregulatory mechanisms to preserve tissue and cellular function in the face of immune-mediated insult; clinically, inflammation following such an insult is termed uveitis. The intra-ocular inflammation in uveitis may be clinically obvious as a result of infection (e.g. toxoplasma, herpes), but in the main infection, if any, remains covert. We now recognise that healthy tissues including the retina have regulatory mechanisms imparted by control of myeloid cells through receptors (e.g. CD200R) and soluble inhibitory factors (e.g. alpha-MSH), regulation of the blood retinal barrier, and active immune surveillance. Once homoeostasis has been disrupted and inflammation ensues, the mechanisms to regulate inflammation, including T cell apoptosis, generation of Treg cells, and myeloid cell suppression in situ, are less successful. Why inflammation becomes persistent remains unknown, but extrapolating from animal models, possibilities include differential trafficking of T cells from the retina, residency of CD8(+) T cells, and alterations of myeloid cell phenotype and function. Translating lessons learned from animal models to humans has been helped by system biology approaches and informatics, which suggest that diseased animals and people share similar changes in T cell phenotypes and monocyte function to date. Together the data infer a possible cryptic infectious drive in uveitis that unlocks and drives persistent autoimmune responses, or promotes further innate immune responses. Thus there may be many mechanisms in common with those observed in autoinflammatory disorders

    In vitro plantlet regeneration from nodal segments and shoot tips of Capsicum chinense Jacq. cv. Naga King Chili

    An in vitro regeneration protocol was developed for Capsicum chinense Jacq. cv. Naga King Chili, a very pungent chili cultivar and an important horticultural crop of Nagaland (Northeast India). Maximum number of shoot (13 ± 0.70) was induced with bud-forming capacity (BFC) index of 10.8, by culturing nodal segments in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 18.16 μM Thidiazuron (TDZ) followed by 35.52 μM 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). Using shoot tips as explants, multiple shoot (10 ± 0.37) (BFC 8.3) was also induced in MS medium fortified with either 18.16 μM TDZ or 35.52 μM BAP. Elongated shoots were best rooted in MS medium containing 5.70 μM indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Rooted plantlets thus developed were hardened in 2–3 weeks time in plastic cups containing potting mixture of a 1:1 mix of soil and cow dung manure and then subsequently transferred to earthen pots. The regenerated plants did not show any variation in the morphology and growth as compared to the parent plant

    Epidemiology of Dengue Virus in Iquitos, Peru 1999 to 2005: Interepidemic and Epidemic Patterns of Transmission

    To develop prevention (including vaccines) and control programs for dengue fever, a significant mosquito-borne disease in the tropics, there is an urgent need for comprehensive long term field epidemiological studies. We report results from a study that monitored ∼2,400 school children and some adult family members for dengue infection at 6 month intervals from 1999 to 2005, in the Amazonian city of Iquitos, Peru. At enrollment, ∼80% of the participants had a previous infection with DENV serotypes 1 and 2 or both. During the first 15 months, about 3 new infections for every 100 participants were observed among the study participants. In 2001, DENV-3, a serotype not previously observed in the region, invaded Iquitos in a process characterized by 3 distinct periods: amplification over at least a 5–6 month period, replacement of previously circulating serotypes, and epidemic transmission when incidence peaked. Incidence patterns of new infections were geographically distinct from baseline prevalence rates prior to arrival of DENV-3, but closely mirrored them during the invasion. DENV transmission varied geographically corresponding to elevated mosquito densities. The invasion of a novel serotype is often characterized by 5–6 months of silent transmission before traditional surveillance programs detect the virus. This article sets the stage for subsequent publications on dengue epidemiology
