Current Understanding of the Impact of Childhood Obesity on the Foot and Lower Limb
Childhood obesity has emerged in recent years as a major public health problem. As this continues to concern
across local, national and international populations, and as our understanding of obesity advances, access to
multi-disciplinary care and understanding of the complications is warranted. Recent findings have
suggested that the musculoskeletal system is one of the multiple body systems compromised by obesity and that aberrant biomechanical function may be a precursor to the onset of musculoskeletal symptoms. This review will consider childhood obesity and its impact on the paediatric foot and lower limb through examination of literature on foot structure and biomechanics of gait. An overview of evidence-based management is out with the context of this review, however some recommendations for clinical practice will be proposed
Analysis of Immune Checkpoint Drug Targets and Tumor Proteotypes in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
New therapeutics targeting immune checkpoint proteins have significantly advanced treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but protein level quantitation of drug targets presents a critical problem. We used multiplexed, targeted mass spectrometry (MS) to quantify immunotherapy target proteins PD-1, PD-L1, PD-L2, IDO1, LAG3, TIM3, ICOSLG, VISTA, GITR, and CD40 in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) NSCLC specimens. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and MS measurements for PD-L1 were weakly correlated, but IHC did not distinguish protein abundance differences detected by MS. PD-L2 abundance exceeded PD-L1 in over half the specimens and the drug target proteins all displayed different abundance patterns. mRNA correlated with protein abundance only for PD-1, PD-L1, and IDO1 and tumor mutation burden did not predict abundance of any protein targets. Global proteome analyses identified distinct proteotypes associated with high PD-L1-expressing and high IDO1-expressing NSCLC. MS quantification of multiple drug targets and tissue proteotypes can improve clinical evaluation of immunotherapies for NSCLC
A Process for Co-Designing Educational Technology Systems for Refugee Children
There is a growing interest in the potential for technology to facilitate emergency education of refugee children. However, designing in this space requires knowledge of the displaced population and the contextual dynamics surrounding it. Design should therefore be informed by both existing research across relevant disciplines, and from the practical experience of those who are on the ground facing the problem in real life. This paper describes a process for designing appropriate technology for these settings. The process draws on literature from emergency education, student engagement and motivation, educational technology, and participatory design. We emphasise a thorough understanding of the problem definition, the nature of the emergency, and of socio-cultural aspects that can inform the design process. We describe how this process was implemented leading to the design of a digital learning space for children living in a refugee camp in Greece. What Makes Theatrical Performances Successful in China's Tourism Industry?
This study aims to explore the factors affecting the success of a popular tourist product, namely, theatrical performance, within the context of China's tourism industry and develop a model based on previously successful productions. Using qualitative software, 22 Chinese-language articles on theatrical performances are analyzed to generate a list of success factors, classified as internal and external. The internal factors are storyline and performing, market positioning and marketing strategy, investment and financial support, operation and management, performing team, outdoor venue, indoor/outdoor stage supporting facilities, continuous improvement, and production team. The external factors are collaboration between cultural industries and local tourism, government support, privatization, and social and cultural effect. This study also provides suggestions for the future development of theatrical performances in China
Tomographic Magnification of Lyman Break Galaxies in The Deep Lens Survey
Using about 450,000 galaxies in the Deep Lens Survey, we present a detection
of the gravitational magnification of z > 4 Lyman Break Galaxies by massive
foreground galaxies with 0.4 < z < 1.0, grouped by redshift. The magnification
signal is detected at S/N greater than 20, and rigorous checks confirm that it
is not contaminated by any galaxy sample overlap in redshift. The inferred
galaxy mass profiles are consistent with earlier lensing analyses at lower
redshift. We then explore the tomographic lens magnification signal by
splitting our foreground galaxy sample into 7 redshift bins. Combining
galaxy-magnification cross-correlations and galaxy angular auto-correlations,
we develop a bias-independent estimator of the tomographic signal. As a
diagnostic of magnification tomography, the measurement of this estimator
rejects a flat dark matter dominated Universe at > 7.5{\sigma} with a fixed
\sigma_8 and is found to be consistent with the expected redshift-dependence of
the WMAP7 {\Lambda}CDM cosmology.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, Accepted to MNRA
Abundances of metal-weak thick-disc candidates
High resolution spectra of 5 candidate metal-weak thick-disc stars suggested
by Beers & Sommer-Larsen (1995) are analyzed to determine their chemical
abundances. The low abundance of all the objects has been confirmed with
metallicity reaching [Fe/H]=-2.9. However, for three objects, the astrometric
data from the Hipparcos catalogue suggests they are true halo members. The
remaining two, for which proper-motion data are not available, may have
disc-like kinematics. It is therefore clear that it is useful to address
properties of putative metal-weak thick-disc stars only if they possess full
kinematic data. For CS 22894-19 the abundance pattern similar to those of
typical halo stars is found, suggesting that chemical composition is not a
useful discriminant between thick-disc and halo stars. CS 29529-12 is found to
be C enhanced with [C/Fe]=+1.0; other chemical peculiarities involve the s
process elements: [Sr/Fe]=-0.65 and [Ba/Fe]=+0.62, leading to a high [Ba/Sr]
considerably larger than what is found in more metal-rich carbon-rich stars,
but similar to LP 706-7 and LP 625-44 discussed by Norris et al (1997a).
Hipparcos data have been used to calculate the space velocities of 25 candidate
metal-weak thick-disc stars, thus allowing us to identify 3 bona fide members,
which support the existence of a metal-poor tail of the thick-disc, at variance
with a claim to the contrary by Ryan & Lambert (1995).Comment: to be published in MNRA
NEOWISE Observations of Near-Earth Objects: Preliminary Results
With the NEOWISE portion of the \emph{Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer}
(WISE) project, we have carried out a highly uniform survey of the near-Earth
object (NEO) population at thermal infrared wavelengths ranging from 3 to 22
m, allowing us to refine estimates of their numbers, sizes, and albedos.
The NEOWISE survey detected NEOs the same way whether they were previously
known or not, subject to the availability of ground-based follow-up
observations, resulting in the discovery of more than 130 new NEOs. The
survey's uniformity in sensitivity, observing cadence, and image quality have
permitted extrapolation of the 428 near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) detected by
NEOWISE during the fully cryogenic portion of the WISE mission to the larger
population. We find that there are 98119 NEAs larger than 1 km and
20,5003000 NEAs larger than 100 m. We show that the Spaceguard goal of
detecting 90% of all 1 km NEAs has been met, and that the cumulative size
distribution is best represented by a broken power law with a slope of
1.320.14 below 1.5 km. This power law slope produces 1,900
NEAs with 140 m. Although previous studies predict another break in the
cumulative size distribution below 50-100 m, resulting in an increase in
the number of NEOs in this size range and smaller, we did not detect enough
objects to comment on this increase. The overall number for the NEA population
between 100-1000 m are lower than previous estimates. The numbers of near-Earth
