    Integrated Expert Management Knowledge on OSI Network Management Objects

    The management of modern telecommunications networks must satisfy ever-increasing operational demands. We propose a study for the improvement of intelligent administration techniques in telecommunications networks. This task is achieved by integrating knowledge base of expert system within the management information used to manage a network. For this purpose, an extension of OSI management framework specifications language has been added and investigated. For this goal, we shall use the language Guidelines for the Definition of Managed Objects (GDMO) and a new property named RULE which gathers important aspects of the facts and the knowledge base of the embedded expert system. Networks can be managed easily by using this proposed integration

    New design processes for knowledge exchange tools for the New IDEAS project

    In this paper, we describe our research into designing tools for knowledge exchange on the New IDEAS project at ImaginationLancaster, a design research lab in Lancaster University. This paper will discuss the design process for designing tools that facilitate knowledge exchange, highlighting the challenges faced during the process. We go on to describe how to support others with designing knowledge exchange tools. We will discuss our experience of running a series of knowledge exchange labs as part of our research, in which participants from all of the faculties within Lancaster University co-designed tools and refer to the process of designing one of the tools - the Case Study Tool. At the end of the paper we outline our key principles for designing KE tools for others so that they can be customised and modified. This has implications for those who work in KE but do not already realise that they are designing KE tools, those who have a desire to understand how to design KE tools and those who work in the area of participatory, open or KE design who want to gain a further understanding of their design process and how to support others in designing or adapting their own KE tools

    Using LiDAR to assess the effect of fire and floods on upland peat bogs, Waterfall Gully, Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia

    A flood exceeding the 100 year average recurrence interval in November 2005 led to the failure of an upland peat bog in Waterfall Gully. The area is prone to severe bushfire and flood events and the control dam at the base of First Falls was filled with sediment sourced from Wilson Bog. A resistant quartzite bar at Fourth Falls has formed a natural constriction point against which burnt logs and debris have collected following previous fire events forming a natural dam resulting in sediment/peat accumulation upstream. The failure of the bog was inevitable as the vegetative material in the log-jam progressively weakened and rotted. Intense flooding triggered the failure but it was augmented by the build up of a critical mass of sediment upstream of the restriction point. The downstream force of the flood waters and the weight of the saturated bog sediments was enough to overcome the basal frictional forces resulting in slumping and headward erosion. LiDAR data clearly shows an erosion channel scoured out by the flood. Approximately 5000 m3 of sediment (-10,100 tonnes) was washed downstream. LiDAR coupled with a tri-spectral scanner has the capacity to identify other upland peat bogs due to their high NDVI value and assess their stability on steep slopes or narrow valleys. Fire is another risk to the stability of these bogs as it has the potential to remove binding vegetation and expose unconsolidated sediments to erosion during subsequent rain events. Groundsurface and vegetation surface DEM\u27s generated from LiDAR combined with NDVI maps derived from a tri-spectral scanner provide an ideal tool to monitor and assess the risk of slumping in other upland peat bogs

    Carrier capture and relaxation in Stranski-Krastanow InxGa1-xAs/GaAs(311)B quantum dots

    We have investigated the structure and optical properties of In0.6Ga0.4As/GaAs(311)B quantum dots (QD's) formed by the Stranski-Krastanow growth mode during metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition. We find that (311)B QD structures display a higher energy QD luminescence emission and a stronger wetting-layer emission than (100) QD's of similar diameter and density. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) measurements reveal shallow QD confinement energies and strong interaction between neighboring quantum dots. Longer PL rise times of the ground-state emission of (311)B QD's compared to (100) QD's are ascribed to the effect of differing numbers, energies, and level spacings of QD confined states on intersublevel relaxation mechanisms at low-carrier excitation densities
