Gaussian potentials facilitate access to quantum Hall states in rotating Bose gases
Through exact numerical diagonalization for small numbers of atoms, we show
that it is possible to access quantum Hall states in harmonically confined Bose
gases at rotation frequencies well below the centrifugal limit by applying a
repulsive Gaussian potential at the trap center. The main idea is to reduce or
eliminate the effective trapping frequency in regions where the particle
density is appreciable. The critical rotation frequency required to obtain the
bosonic Laughlin state can be fixed at an experimentally accessible value by
choosing an applied Gaussian whose amplitude increases linearly with the number
of atoms while its width increases as the square root.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

QSO hosts and environments at z=0.9 to 4.2: JHK images with adaptive optics
We have observed nine QSOs with redshifts 0.85 to 4.16 at near-IR wavelengths
with the adaptive optics bonnette of the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope.
Exposure times ranged from 1500 to 24000s (mostly near 7000s) in J, H, or K
bands, with pixels 0.035 arcsec on the sky. The FWHM of the co-added images at
the location of the quasars are typically 0.16 arcsec. Including another QSO
published previously, we find associated QSO structure in at least eight of ten
objects, including the QSO at z = 4.16. The structures seen in all cases
include long faint features which appear to be tidal tails. In four cases we
have also resolved the QSO host galaxy, but find them to be smooth and
symmetrical: future PSF removal may expand this result. Including one object
previously reported, of the nine objects with more extended structure, five are
radio-loud, and all but one of these appear to be in a dense small group of
compact galaxy companions. The radio-quiet objects do not occupy the same dense
environments, as seen in the NIR. In this small sample we do not find any
apparent trends of these properties with redshift, over the range 0.8 < z <
2.4. The colors of the host galaxies and companions are consistent with young
stellar populations at the QSO redshift. Our observations suggest that adaptive
optic observations in the visible region will exhibit luminous signatures of
the substantial star-formation activity that must be occurring.Comment: 22 pages including 10 tables, plus 11 figures. To appear in A
A Framework for the Analysis of Sport Sponsorship and the Cola Wars
The primary purpose of this article was to explore the concept of understanding sports contribution to sponsorship through understanding the structure and function of the sponsorship industry. The colas were selected as an example industry to develop the concept of understanding sponsorship using a molecular analysis. This type of molecular analysis will provide perspective and foster better relationships of how the sponsor can do business on the sport and its event. Sponsors are demanding accountability and this type of approach opens the dialogue for exploring symbiotic relationships among the sport and the sponsor
A Typology for the Understanding of Structure and Function of a Sports Industry: A Case Study of NASCAR
Examination of sport from a molecular level will help to increase understanding about the nature of a sport. NASCAR (National Association of Stock Car Racing) is a growing sport that has the potential to serve as a case study to understand the structure and function of sport from a molecular level. A framework was developed to analyze the relationships among the actors in NASCAR
Topological Entropy of Quantum Hall States in Rotating Bose Gases
Through exact numerical diagonalization, the von Neumann entropy is
calculated for the Laughlin and Pfaffian quantum Hall states in rotating
interacting Bose gases at zero temperature in the lowest Landau level limit.
The particles comprising the states are indistinguishable, so the required
spatial bipartitioning is effected by tracing over a subset of single-particle
orbitals. The topological entropy is then extracted through a finite-size
scaling analysis. The results for the Laughlin and the Pfaffian states agree
with the expected values of and , respectively.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Effects Of Caffeine Dose Timing On Total Urine Excretion During Sodium-Aided Hyperhydration Protocols
When used alone, both caffeine and sodium-aided hyperhydration (SAH) can be ergogenic. Although caffeine use in conjunction with SAH promotes diuresis, hyperhydration can be achieved, albeit at lower levels compared to SAH alone. Previous caffeine and SAH work has suggested most of the caffeine induced diuresis occurs within 15 min of consumption of a bolus of caffeine, sodium and water. This response suggests that caffeine-induces diuresis for only 15 min following its consumption, and/or that the diuretic effects of caffeine are dependent on hydration levels. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of caffeine, consumed at different time-points, on diuresis during SAH protocols. METHODS: Subjects were 17 healthy males (23 ± 5 yr, 177 ± 8 cm, 83.4 ± 15.3 kg). Each performed 4, 90 min hyperhydration trials in a randomized, double-blind fashion. Protocols began with a bladder void and measurement of urine specific gravity (USG) followed by ingestion of 15 mL H2O ∙ kg bm-1 with one of four treatments: Placebo (PL), 70.5 mg NaCl ∙ kg bm-1 (Na), or a combination of NaCl and caffeine consumed in two different strategies: 70.5 mg NaCl + 5 mg caffeine ∙ kg bm-1 taken at the start of the trial (NaCaf0), or 70.5 mg NaCl ∙ kg bm-1 taken at the start and 5 mg caffeine ∙ kg bm-1 taken at 75 min of the trial (NaCaf75). After consuming the water, subjects rested for 90 min performing a measured bladder void every 15 min. Total urine excreted (TUE) was expressed as a percentage of the total fluid consumed during the hyperhydration protocols. USG and TUE were compared using one-way repeated measures ANOVA with Sidak post hoc analyses. Levels of significance were set a priori at P \u3c 0.05. RESULTS: USGs were 1.007 ± 0.003 (PL), 1.008 ± 0.003 (Na), 1.007 ± 0.004 (NaCaf0), and 1.009 ± 0.004 (NaCaf75) (P \u3e 0.05). TUE for PL (87 ± 30%) was significantly higher than all other protocols (P \u3c 0.05). TUE for NaCaf0 (73 ± 16%) was significantly higher than Na (56 ± 18%, P = 0.02) and NaCaf75 (52 ± 13% P \u3c 0.01). NSD in TUE was observed between Na and NaCaf75. CONCLUSION: The results reaffirm that, when caffeine is consumed at the beginning of a SAH strategy, hyperhydration can be achieved, but at a lower level compared to SAH without caffeine. The results also suggest that waiting to consume caffeine until 75 min after water is consumed does not result in caffeine induced diuresis during a SAH protocol
