Long-term regulation of proximal tubule acid–base transporter abundance by angiotensin II
In the proximal tubule, angiotensin II (Ang-II) regulates HCO−3 reabsorption and H+ secretion by binding the type 1 Ang-II (AT1) receptor, stimulating Na+/HCO−3 cotransport and Na+/H+ exchange. Studies were carried out to determine if long-term changes in Ang-II receptor occupation alter the abundance of the basolateral Na+/HCO−3 cotransporter (NBC1) or the apical membrane type 3Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE3). In the first set of experiments, rats eating a low-sodium diet were infused with the AT1 blocker, candesartan, or vehicle. In the second, lisinopril-infused rats were infused with either Ang II or vehicle. Transporter abundances were determined in whole kidney homogenates (WKH) and in brush border membrane (BBM) preparations by semiquantitative immunoblotting. Tissue distribution of transporters was assessed by immunocytochemistry. Blockade of the AT1 receptor by candesartan caused decreased abundance of NBC1 in WKH (59±9% of control; P<0.05) and Ang-II infusion increased abundance (130±7% of control; P<0.05). Changes in NBC1 in response to candesartan were confirmed immunohistochemically. Neither candesartan nor Ang II infusion affected the abundance of NHE3 in WKH or cortical homogenates. Candesartan decreased type 2 sodium-phosphate cotransporter abundance in both WKH (52±7% of control; P<0.05) and BBM (32±7% of control; P<0.05). Serum bicarbonate was decreased by candesartan and increased by Ang-II. Candesartan also decreased urinary ammonium excretion (P<0.05). The long-term effects of Ang-II in the proximal tubule may be mediated in part by regulation of NBC1 abundance, modifying bicarbonate reabsorption

Future outlook of people living alone with early-stage dementia and their non-resident relatives and friends who support them
Little is known about the experiences of people living alone with dementia in the community and their non-resident relatives and friends who support them. In this paper, we explore their respective attitudes and approaches to the future, particularly regarding the future care and living arrangements of those living with dementia. The study is based on a qualitative secondary analysis of interviews with 24 people living alone with early-stage dementia in North Wales, United Kingdom, and one of their relatives or friends who supported them. All but four of the dyads were interviewed twice over 12 months (a total of 88 interviews). In the analysis, it was observed that several people with dementia expressed the desire to continue living at home for ‘as long as possible’. A framework approach was used to investigate this theme in more depth, drawing on concepts from the existing studies of people living with dementia and across disciplines. Similarities and differences in the future outlook and temporal orientation of the participants were identified. The results support previousresearchsuggestingthat the future outlookofpeoplelivingwithearly-stagedementia can be interpreted in part as a response to their situation and a way of coping with the threats that it is perceived to present, and not just an impaired view of time. Priorities for future research are highlighted in the discussion
Cold Feedback in Cooling-Flow Galaxy Clusters
We put forward an alternative view to the Bondi-driven feedback between
heating and cooling of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) in cooling flow galaxies
and clusters. We adopt the popular view that the heating is due to an active
galactic nucleus (AGN), i.e. a central black hole accreting mass and launching
jets and/or winds. We propose that the feedback occurs with the entire cool
inner region (5-30 kpc). A moderate cooling flow does exist here, and
non-linear over-dense blobs of gas cool fast and are removed from the ICM
before experiencing the next major AGN heating event. Some of these blobs may
not accrete on the central black hole, but may form stars and cold molecular
clouds. We discuss the conditions under which the dense blobs may cool to low

Global modeling of the nitrate radical (NO3) for present and pre-industrial scenarios
AbstractIncreasing the complexity of the chemistry scheme in the global chemistry transport model STOCHEM to STOCHEM-CRI (Utembe et al., 2010) leads to an increase in NOx as well as ozone resulting in higher NO3 production over forested regions and regions impacted by anthropogenic emission. Peak NO3 is located over the continents near NOx emission sources. NO3 is formed in the main by the reaction of NO2 with O3, and the significant losses of NO3 are due to the photolysis and the reactions with NO and VOCs. Isoprene is an important biogenic VOC, and the possibility of HOx recycling via isoprene chemistry and other mechanisms such as the reaction of RO2 with HO2 has been investigated previously (Archibald et al., 2010a). The importance of including HOx recycling processes on the global budget of NO3 for present and pre-industrial scenarios has been studied using STOCHEM-CRI, and the results are compared. The large increase (up to 60% for present and up to 80% for pre-industrial) in NO3 is driven by the reduced lifetime of emitted VOCs because of the increase in the HOx concentration. The maximum concentration changes (up to 15ppt) for NO3 from pre-industrial to present day are found at the surface between 30oN and 60oN because of the increase in NOx concentrations in the present day integrations
Free Meixner states
Free Meixner states are a class of functionals on non-commutative polynomials
introduced in math.CO/0410482. They are characterized by a resolvent-type form
for the generating function of their orthogonal polynomials, by a recursion
relation for those polynomials, or by a second-order non-commutative
differential equation satisfied by their free cumulant functional. In this
paper, we construct an operator model for free Meixner states. By combinatorial
methods, we also derive an operator model for their free cumulant functionals.
This, in turn, allows us to construct a number of examples. Many of these
examples are shown to be trivial, in the sense of being free products of
functionals which depend on only a single variable, or rotations of such free
products. On the other hand, the multinomial distribution is a free Meixner
state and is not a product. Neither is a large class of tracial free Meixner
states which are analogous to the simple quadratic exponential families in

A Compact Beam Stop for a Rare Kaon Decay Experiment
We describe the development and testing of a novel beam stop for use in a
rare kaon decay experiment at the Brookhaven AGS. The beam stop is located
inside a dipole spectrometer magnet in close proximity to straw drift chambers
and intercepts a high-intensity neutral hadron beam. The design process,
involving both Monte Carlo simulations and beam tests of alternative beam-stop
shielding arrangements, had the goal of minimizing the leakage of particles
from the beam stop and the resulting hit rates in detectors, while preserving
maximum acceptance for events of interest. The beam tests consisted of
measurements of rates in drift chambers, scintilation counter hodoscopes, a gas
threshold Cherenkov counter, and a lead glass array. Measurements were also
made with a set of specialized detectors which were sensitive to low-energy
neutrons, photons, and charged particles. Comparisons are made between these

Semigroups of distributions with linear Jacobi parameters
We show that a convolution semigroup of measures has Jacobi parameters
polynomial in the convolution parameter if and only if the measures come
from the Meixner class. Moreover, we prove the parallel result, in a more
explicit way, for the free convolution and the free Meixner class. We then
construct the class of measures satisfying the same property for the two-state
free convolution. This class of two-state free convolution semigroups has not
been considered explicitly before. We show that it also has Meixner-type
properties. Specifically, it contains the analogs of the normal, Poisson, and
binomial distributions, has a Laha-Lukacs-type characterization, and is related

Dyadic influences on awareness of condition in people with dementia: findings from the IDEAL cohort
YesIntroduction: The discrepancy between caregiver-ratings and self-ratings
of abilities is commonly used to assess awareness in people with dementia.
We investigated the contribution of caregiver and dyadic characteristics to the
difference in perspective between caregiver-informants and people with dementia
about difficulties experienced, when considering awareness of condition.
Methods: We conducted exploratory cross-sectional analyses using data from
the IDEAL cohort. Participants were 1,038 community-dwelling people with
mild-to-moderate dementia, and coresident spouse/partner caregivers. The
Representations and Adjustment to Dementia Index (RADIX) checklist reporting
difficulties commonly experienced in dementia was completed by 960 caregiver-informants and 989 people with dementia. Difference in scores was calculated
for 916 dyads. Demographic information, cognition, informant-rated functional
ability and neuropsychiatric symptoms were recorded for the person with
dementia. Self-reported data were collected on mood, comorbidity, religion,
importance of religion, relationship quality, and caregiver stress.
Results: For most dyads, caregivers reported more RADIX difficulties than people
with dementia. Caregiver RADIX ratings were more closely associated with
informant-rated functional ability and neuropsychiatric symptoms than with
cognition. More RADIX difficulties and higher stress were reported by female
caregivers. Greater RADIX difference was associated with more caregiver stress,
and older age but less depression in people with dementia.
Conclusion: Few dyadic characteristics were important, but caregiver stress was
higher where caregivers reported more RADIX difficulties and/or the difference in
perspective was greater, whereas partners with dementia reported better mood.
In addition to offering information about awareness of condition, the caregiver
rating and difference in perspectives could indicate where more support is
