    Phenomenology of Multi-W Processes in Cosmic Rays

    We report on a study of the potential of various cosmic ray physics experiments to search for Standard Model processes involving the nonperturbative production of O(30) weak gauge bosons. Whereas present and near-future experiments are insensitive to proton-induced processes, neutrino-induced processes give rise to promising signatures and rates in AMANDA, DUMAND, MACRO and NESTOR provided that a cosmic neutrino flux exists at levels suggested by recent models of active galactic nuclei. The Fly's Eye currently constrains the largest region of parameter space characterizing multi-W phenomena.Comment: (Invited talk presented by A.     At the Leeds Met staff development festival in 2008 a library graduate trainee, Anna Hepworth, took part in a ‘Dragons’ Den’ event which saw staff propose new, innovative ideas to a panel of senior managers. Anna’s suggestion was to develop a Facebook application (or ‘app’) for the library and it was one of the competition winners. Anna’s initial proposal was to create a Leeds Met library catalogue application, but after discussions with members of the library’s ‘technologies for learning’ team it was decided to take the application a stage further, creating a mash-up using data from the library management system (Sirsi-Dynix Symphony). The Facebook application would send a library catalogue search box to a Facebook profile, but would also add value by delivering customised user data, including library record details such as number of issues, reservations and overdues. There would also be links to the library website and online self-service functions from the application

    Programs in theoretical and computational aerodynamics in the United States are described. Those aspects of programs that relate to aeronautics are detailed. The role of analysis at various levels of sophistication is discussed as well as the inverse solution techniques that are of primary importance in design methodology. The research is divided into the broad categories of application for boundary layer flow, Navier-Stokes turbulence modeling, internal flows, two-dimensional configurations, subsonic and supersonic aircraft, transonic aircraft, and the space shuttle.     The influence of elevated and cryogenic temperatures on the elastic moduli and fracture strengths of several C6000/PMR-15 and C6000/NR-15082 laminates was measured. Tests were conducted at -157 C, 24 C, and 316 C (-250 F, 75 F, and 600 F). Both notched and unnotched laminates were tested. The average stress failure criterion was used to predict the fracture strength of quasi-isotropic notched laminates

    Creep and creep rupture of laminated graphite/epoxy composites

    An incremental numerical procedure based on lamination theory is developed to predict creep and creep rupture of general laminates. Existing unidirectional creep compliance and delayed failure data is used to develop analytical models for lamina response. The compliance model is based on a procedure proposed by Findley which incorporates the power law for creep into a nonlinear constitutive relationship. The matrix octahedral shear stress is assumed to control the stress interaction effect. A modified superposition principle is used to account for the varying stress level effect on the creep strain. The lamina failure model is based on a modification of the Tsai-Hill theory which includes the time dependent creep rupture strength. A linear cumulative damage law is used to monitor the remaining lifetime in each ply

    Relationship Between Physical Conditioning and Plasma High Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol Concentration

    Five subjects (three females and two males) took part in an exercise regimen in order to determine if aerobic exercise results in an increase in high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels (HDL-C) in the plasma. The exercise regimen consisted of running three miles a day, five days per week for six months. Running speed was at such a pace that the subjects attained a minimum of 60% of their maximal heart rate reserve (MHRR). Before the training program began the following parameters were measured in all of the subjects: height, weight, percent body fat, maximal oxygen consumption (Vâ‚’â‚‚ max), vital capacity, resting heart rate, resting blood pressure, HDL-C, plasma triglycerides (TG), and plasma cholesterol (TC). These same measurements were retaken every two months and at the conclusion of the study. The exercise protocol produced significant changes in Vâ‚’â‚‚ max and resting heart rate. None of the other parameters were significantly changed. The results of this study have shown that aerobic exercise does not cause significant changes in HDL-C levels
