Purpose. The purpose of the study was to identify criteria for the use by public school administrators and their staffs in conducting matters pertaining to professional negotiations and to analyze opinions of Tennessee public school superintendents toward selected criteria. Interrelationships were tested among nine independent variables and ten dependent variables. (Abstract shortened.

MICC: A tool for computing short distances in the curve complex

The complex of curves C(Sg)\mathcal{C}(S_g) of a closed orientable surface of genus g2g \geq 2 is the simplicial complex having its vertices, C0(Sg)\mathcal{C}^0(S_g), are isotopy classes of essential curves in SgS_g. Two vertices co-bound an edge of the 11-skeleton, C1(Sg)\mathcal{C}^1(S_g), if there are disjoint representatives in SgS_g. A metric is obtained on C0(Sg)\mathcal{C}^0(S_g) by assigning unit length to each edge of C1(Sg)\mathcal{C}^1(S_g). Thus, the distance between two vertices, d(v,w)d(v,w), corresponds to the length of a geodesic---a shortest edge-path between vv and ww in C1(Sg)\mathcal{C}^1 (S_g). Recently, Birman, Margalit and the second author introduced the concept of {\em initially efficient geodesics} in C1(Sg)\mathcal{C}^1(S_g) and used them to give a new algorithm for computing the distance between vertices. In this note we introduce the software package MICC ({\em Metric in the Curve Complex}), a partial implementation of the initially efficient geodesic algorithm. We discuss the mathematics underlying MICC and give applications. In particular, we give examples of distance four vertex pairs, for g=2g=2 and 3. Previously, there was only one known example, in genus 22, due to John Hempel.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, Version 2 has updated figures and reference

Enhancing the durability of low durability Eucalyptus plantation species: a review of strategies

    Get PDF
Eucalyptus species native to Australia have shown excellent growth rates, good physical properties and resistance to diseases. As a result, they are widely planted globally for a variety of uses. One negative aspect of many of these faster growing species is that they have a high percentage of low durability heartwood that resists preservative treatment. In Australia, large plantations of these species were established near the end of the 20 th Century, primarily for paper production. However, shifting priorities have encouraged a re-examination of possible uses for these materials. Shining gum (Eucalyptus nitens) is an important plantation species in Tasmania. Among the possible uses for this species are those requiring enhanced durability. This paper reviews the options for enhancing the durability of Shining gum heartwood for structural and appearance product applications in both interior and exterior exposures

New-England or A Briefe Enarration of the Ayre, Earth, Water, Fish and Fowles of That Country. With a Description of the Natures, Orders, Habits, and Religion of the Natives; in Latine and English Verse

This text, a Latin poem in dactylic hexameter with an accompanying English translation in heroic verse stands as the earliest surviving work of poetry about New England and the second oldest poem whose origins can be traced directly to the British American colonies. Only two copies of the original 1625 edition are known to survive; one is held at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, and the other is housed at the British Museum. The Latin portion comprises 309 lines and praises the geographic features, flora and fauna of New England, and spends a majority of its verses describing the Native Americans with awe and curiosity. The English version contains 366 lines, frequently uses obscure terminology, and departs too drastically from the original to be of any assistance for discerning the Latin. The author is William Morrell, (ca. 1590-after 1626) who received his Bachelors of Arts from Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1615. On May 23 and 24, 1619 Morrell was ordained as a deacon and priest respectively at Peterborough. Several years later in 1623, after receiving a commission by the ecclesiastical court to oversee and administer any churches which were already or might be instituted in the new colonies, Morrell accompanied English navy Captain Robert Gorges to New England, who was tasked with assisting the establishment of the short-lived Wessagusset Colony in present-day Weymouth. The colony was abandoned in the spring of 1624 due to financial difficulties and tensions with the Natives. Robert Gorges served as Governor-General of New England between 1623 and 1624. Gorges returned to England in 1624, but Morrell remained behind in Plymouth for one year to learn more about New England. These two poems are the fruits of his observations. They were published in 1625 in London by John Dawson. These writings make it clear that Morrell was an able classical scholar. He frequently peppers his English with Latin maxims reminiscent of Virgil and Apuleius and he employs numerous references to classical mythological figures and events

Fiscal policy incentives for minerals exploration : what South Africa can learn from the Canadian experience

    Get PDF
South Africa has a long history of mineral resource exploitation. As a result of accelerated economic growth in emerging markets in the last decade, the demand for metals and minerals has grown rapidly. Several countries have profited from this demand-supply imbalance while others have lagged behind. This research investigates the factors affecting this situation with the objective of making recommendations to improve the competitiveness of the South African minerals sector. A literature review identifies the potential reasons from a firm and state perspective for specific mineral resource influenced countries thriving. These factors were explored further through a qualitative research process which sampled perceptions of relevant companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Emerging from this study and in support of the factors identified in the literature review was the importance of fiscal incentives. A quantitative study was then conducted to develop an understanding of the relationships between fiscal incentives and value (market capitalisation). The potential for the application of these methods to South Africa was then assessed. The research identified the importance of an enabling environment to the sustained competitiveness of a minerals sector. Several key factors emerged, with specific reference to tax incentives for mineral exploration. A model of the interrelationship between entrepreneur, mineral resources and the role of the state was developed to provide guidance for policy makers. If implemented, this could catalyse the mineral exploration and subsequently the extractive industries in South Africa. Prescription Drug Labeling Medication Errors: A Big Deal for Pharmacists

    Get PDF
Today, in the health care profession, all types of medication errors including missed dose, wrong dosage forms, wrong time interval, wrong route, etc., are a big deal for better patient care. Today, problems related to medications are common in the healthcare profession, and are responsible for significant morbidity, mortality, and cost. Several recent studies have demonstrated that patients frequently have difficulty in reading and understanding medication labels. According to the Institute of Medicine report, “Preventing Medication Errors”, cited poor labeling as a central cause for medication errors in the USA. Evidence suggests that specific content and format of prescription drug labels facilitate communication with and comprehension by patients. Efforts to improve the labels should be guided by such evidence, although an additional study assessing the influence of label design on medication-taking behavior and health outcomes is needed. Several policy options exist to require minimal standards to optimize medical therapy, particularly in light of the new Medicare prescription drug benefit
